Her fear and apprehension in the lake bath scene, annoyance during the sword and spear exchange against the guy in camp, her anguish and hopelessness when watching her father sharpening the sword, etc.

crunh just a different cinematic experience to the one I’m after, but okay haha. The cartoon does feel more realistic in a way that I feel like I’m part of their world.. that’s just how I like to experience my movies though and for me is a telling of great cinematography.

I saw two Mulan movies and I liked both of them. Although the story and the focus of two movies were different, Mulan is still Mulan. The brave and real fighter of all time. I myself grew up in all- daughter Chinese family and always pushed myself to make my mom proud. So I can be totally related to her story. This movie is so far my favorite disney live action movie so far! Its really good😍 at first I was disappointed that mushu is not in but the movie itself makes up for it
For everyone saying she doesn’t show much emotion, certain Asian cultures don’t typically. They’re taught to be more reserved and controlled. I once gave my friend a hug when we were saying goodbye for good since he was returning home and he stood stiff as a board lol. Not all are like that obviously, but the western culture is typically more open to openly expressing feelings. I think the restrained emotions in this film was quite accurate regarding the context. I mean, when I watch Disney’s Frozen, I cringe so much because it’s so westernized and tween-oriented in its dialogue and presentation 🥴; I had really been looking forward to a serious adaptation of the beautiful European story of The Snow Queen.

Mulan's dad may have groomed her with some basics in combat but she still had to hone her swords skills and learn to be brave in the face of fear. Just like someone training in martial arts must progressively improve to earn their different belt colors ( up to the coveted black belt ). This Mulan was still a diamond in the rough before the military training ... in fact she learned eventually when not to kill as well which is a wonderful skill to master in self constraint.

And don't forget that everyone has their own opinion (quite difficult to understand when we are asking for the "freedom of speech" but we polish someone who has "difference opinion"). By the way, the personal opinion (in the real world) is not a part of the movie (specially virtual environment). If we try to forgot all information and all versions of MULAN in our memory and just enjoy a movie. We might get the massage from TEAM clearly and smoothly.

I saw two Mulan movies and I liked both of them. Although the story and the focus of two movies were different, Mulan is still Mulan. The brave and real fighter of all time. I myself grew up in all- daughter Chinese family and always pushed myself to make my mom proud. So I can be totally related to her story. In my opinion, this version of Mulan really presents women' s right !! We are all equal no matter what.

For everyone saying she doesn’t show much emotion, certain Asian cultures don’t typically. They’re taught to be more reserved and controlled. I once gave my friend a hug when we were saying goodbye for good since he was returning home and he stood stiff as a board lol. Not all are like that obviously, but the western culture is typically more open to openly expressing feelings. I think the restrained emotions in this film was quite accurate regarding the context. I mean, when I watch Disney’s Frozen, I cringe so much because it’s so westernized and tween-oriented in its dialogue and presentation 🥴; I had really been looking forward to a serious adaptation of the beautiful European story of The Snow Queen.
why did she act better here than the movie
Winifred Eghrudje she always act like that in every movie. But Chinese love it. Because she’s considered a cool beauty type actress in china. Too much emotion ruins it. You ever see snape from Harry potter smile lot? Same thing here. She convey more emotion from voice line and action. Don’t know why she was chosen to be mulan, who was very emotional in cartoon. But that’s honestly her version of mulan. From what I see she perform what chinese expect.

But now I’ve seen her performance. I think she did great job creating a new mulan. One who isn’t emotional, but very determines to reach its goal. Someone who fits the role of an true female warrior. I think in real life mulan is probably closer to this mulan. Because war ain’t joke, you can’t win war with goofy altitude.
Not her fault. She really didn't have much to work with when she was a bad ass from the beginning instead of slowly becoming a skilled warrior. 🙄

@@mrinde7 No she was not full badass before being trained by Donny Yen's character. Mulan's dad may have groomed her with some basics in combat but she still had to hone her swords skills and learn to be brave in the face of fear. Just like someone training in martial arts must progressively improve to earn their different belt colors ( up to the coveted black belt ). This Mulan was still a diamond in the rough before the military training ... in fact she learned eventually when not to kill as well which is a wonderful skill to master in self constraint.

Gong li is a mega A-list star in china. She has been for decades. As previously said in this thread, having her audition would be like making brad pitt or angelina jolie or tom hanks or george clooney audition for a film in the 2020s. It’s no need and very unlikely to even exist. At this point in their careers, they are asked to be in a movie not auditioning for them.

She fit with Mulan (specially in the VIEW of production TEAM). Don't forget that historical novel always far from realistic and strongly depends on MEANING of WRITER or PRODUCTION TEAM (which we know that both "animation" and "live action" is never reach the truth). And don't forget that everyone has their own opinion (quite difficult to understand when we are asking for the "freedom of speech" but we polish someone who has "difference opinion"). By the way, the personal opinion (in the real world) is not a part of the movie (specially virtual environment). If we try to forgot all information and all versions of MULAN in our memory and just enjoy a movie. We might get the massage from TEAM clearly and smoothly.

by "false" I mean that in my opinion (and I repeat: in my opinion!) Liu Yifei seemed even less comfortable doing this Mulan instead of acting in REAL Chinese movies. But that's normal. American and Chinese films have two completely different styles. Like the Italian ones or those of Bollywood.
And I think that an American film that tries to copy a Chinese one (to be beautiful in the eyes of the Chinese themselves) combined with the American style ... mmh doesn't work in my opinion.
But as I said it is MY opinion. Anyone can disagree. Some people liked the film a lot and I'm very happy for them because they enjoyed it as they wanted.
