I have the AIS 55mm Micro F 2.8. Bought it at a yard sale years ago for $75 along with a 2x converter. Didn't shoot it for years and when i did finally. Wow how sharp this lens is now it lives on my F3.

Nice find and yeah. that's a good standard lens.

@@DavidHancock Kind of funny I didn’t want yet another 50. Bought it because it was in such good condition and well $75 seemed to good to pass up for both. Never even put it on my camera for a few years. Now my other fifties don’t see the light of day

Thanks for an excellent video. I’m impressed by the massive knowledge and insight of photo equipment. This video its just another prove of that👌

That’s an interesting reference for distance.

Actually, my favorite part of the script writing for these. It's a riff on the running joke that Americans will use any unit of measure that isn't metric.

Shooting an F3 with this lens tomorrow. Really looking forward to it.

Excellent review and examples. Very excited to use this lens, just purchased a slightly newer non-Ai version(K series I believe it is called).

This looks like a wonderful walk around lens paired with the Nikon Z5. But unfortunately this lens is hard to come by in my area.

It would definitely pair well with a Z5, especially with a macro focusing adapter.

Hi, was this lens tested for film negative scans via DSLR + macro lens?

    • @DavidHancock

I didn't do that, but it would probably be a good option for that.

Hi, nice review--thank you! Did you test the AI or pre-AI version? And do you know if performance is similar on both?

I recently purchased a Nikon PB-6 bellows system ( early 80's vintage ) with a slide and film strip copier attachment on Ebay. This bellows system was specifically designed for the 55mm and 105mm micro nikkor lenses. There is a separate cable release to manually stop down the aperture to F8 or F11 and then you adjust the shutter speed to get the correct exposure for whatever light source is being used. I use a Nikon D850 and a 55mm micro to copy my slides and the results are outstanding, better than anything you can get from any flat bed scanner. I gave up on flat bed scanners years ago because of the time required for a high resolution scan of a single slide and the mediocre results.
