Robert Motherwell: One of the Founders of Abstract Expressionism

  • Few artists were as intrinsically connected to Abstract Expressionism as Robert Motherwell (1915-1991). Unlike Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, whose stars burned brightly but briefly, Motherwell remained prolific throughout his 50-year career. He was a searching artist whose output, though determinedly abstract, was also hugely varied.
Motherwell set up the Dedalus Foundation in 1981 ‘to support public understanding and appreciation of the principles of modern art’ - through scholarships, publications, exhibitions, research projects and more. Since his death, it has also been devoted to his artistic legacy.

When u get in front of a really great Motherwell the force that comes off the canvas is intense. Not every picture, but some of them just resonate energy, strength, and power.

If I were rich I would collect nothing but Motherwells. His work gives off a humanistic glow of pure feeling. Depth and imagination. My all-time favorite artist.

For centuries, art has fascinated people. The sensitivity of the audience resulted from being stimulated by cultural events, social changes, wars, etc.
This is how new directions in art emerged. Today's world needs something else, and that's why Compmaturism.
The works of the Compmaturists relate to today's human needs; they are emotional, devoid of routine and calculation.
They are filled with art juice. That is why I love COMPMATURISM

When I see his paintings I think of the tale of The Emperor's New Clothes. How so many seemingly otherwise intelligent people can be taken in by such bull sh*it is astonishing.

@@richardanderson6257 The work of Motherwell makes me feel warm all over. It has a depth and expressivity that few of the other Ab-Ex painters could touch. Anyone who doesn't get it, well...too bad for them.

Yeah, that's your uninformed opinion. Even if you don't like his work, which btw I don't, there's no way *most of his paintings* could be done by a baby. That's just the cliché phrase that people who don't understand abstract art or it's historical value use to try and delegitimaze it . You probably think that Picasso sucks, you love Van Gogh (or at least 2-3 of his paintings) and don't know who Gaugin is. Been there, done that. Things are more complex than they appear to be

@@richardanderson6257 no, they totally get it. you are the one who doesnt get it. In reality there is nothing TO get. Its just pretentious drivel trying to trick you into thinking some paint splatters are worth thousands of dollars so some rich guy can get richer and criminals can launder money.
