No offense intended toward Brickey, but Facial Recognition Technologies have been a recognized science since long before the 1960’s (actually, the 1850’s) when it became hyper-militarized and viewed in science fiction movies and anti-government/anti-Big Brother videos as a creepy AF societal intrusion…

Innovating is at the heart of WDI. When WDI redefines what is possible (and in doing so creates unimaginable experiences for the park guests) it pushes human creativity FORWARD. We all experience the wonder and awe, we ask ourselves "how the heck did they do that?" and in doing so, we question our own abilities and self imposed limitations. Fantastic video, Mark.

ok hear me out. the OLAT tech is cool but I think if anything they'd implement it into a ride that already uses precurser tech AKA Spaceship Earth. Spaceship Earth already uses a photo taken to put you in your own future, I could defenitly see this being the evolution of that especially since the original refurb was shelved.
I thought Runaway Railway was about not wearing 3D glasses since it’s 2D plus. It’s still screen based rides, but you move with different screens. There should be more merging of screens and animatronics like Shanghai’s Pirates or Tokyo’s Frozen rides. Universal Epic’s Dark Universe will have the dark ride with an amazing Wolfman animatronic.
I’m not sure I like the facial recognition on rides. The thrill gets old fast. You can still get your name called out on ET.
Yeah, ET quickly became about finding the wackiest name you could find in their system.
Very interesting. When you said “imagine the avatar floating in water, turns and it’s you asking if you are ready to go and then imagine entering Pandora with you as an actual avatar” I literally got excited. Like THAT specifically would be so dope.

Getting rid of 3-D glasses would save money in a long run they wouldn’t have to staff people to clean them! Also that would be pretty cool to be a ghost or a avatar

Just saw this video and I clicked so fast! I would love to see a 3D Show like Captain EO with no Glasses! No one likes 3D Glasses. They are a tool that puts you close to the action. But they feel like a barrier for your eyes. Sometimes they have an explaination like Safety Glasses but I'd love a 3D show with no glasses in a theatre! Thanks for the video! Watching now!
This is one small step in Disney moving away from glasses, there are tons of other projects they are working on to also minimize the use of glasses. Hope you enjoy!

As someone who wears glasses, I'd love to not have to wear a big ol' pair of 3D glasses on an attraction!
Same. They mess with my prosthetic lenses inside my eyeballs.
I like that rather than getting rid of 3D, it's more like we could be getting upgrades. Same with Autopia. Don't get rid of it completely (I know it takes a crap ton of space, but it's so fun!). Replace it with an upgrade... Like hovercrafts.
Funny that Disney and glasses-free 3D tech comes up again. Before Disney bought Lucasfilm, LF was demoing glasses-free 3D tech in a handful of theaters that also involved what was apparently a very effective conversion of originally 2D movies and was easy/cheap to implement in current theaters. They showed the first several scenes of A New Hope with this technology to several in the entertainment industry and met with rave reviews.
Shortly after, when Disney bought LF, they immediately 86'd the entire thing.
That was the first red flag.
I would love to know more about this, not doubting you but if true that could have revolutionized both film and park industries. Seems remarkably stupid and short sighted to shelve something like that.
@@jeffacallaway Unfortunately after a bunch of digging, I could find nothing with any more info that what I (honestly vaguely) remember. I do know that there wasn't a completed conversion of ANH done yet, and what little had been done was not shown to the general public. IIRC it was about the time Lucas was converting and re-releasing the prequels in 3D, but was wanting to up the ante with the overall presentation when it came to the original trilogy.
I wish I could find SOMETHING detailing the ANH demo that was being done, because I know I had read it in a print magazine and it was only a year or so before Disney bought LucasFilm that I had.
But I completely agree, everything sounded like it could be a total game changer, and Disney being short sighted enough to dump it honestly seems par for the course at this point in history.
@NordicDan While I agree there's no shortage of dumb decisions Disney has made on an executive level, dumping that technology would literally be like pouring out water in a desert. Remarkably stupid, even for them.

Now here is the question, let’s say they do the Avatar idea you mentioned, would we as guests have the ability to say we don’t want them to basically AI animate our faces? I don’t love that concept in general but I really wouldn’t want to see myself in certain attractions while some I might be interested in seeing. Like if I could say yes to Haunted Mansion and no to Avatar that would be an ideal world, or at least an “opt out” option for all attractions using that type of tech, while not preventing us from riding in general.
In France (Disneyland Paris), TWDC would probably not been authorized to do that because of the GDPR.
A great and effective explanation of some neat technology. But I hope that Imagineering doesn't take this tech to the extremes you described.
One part of good rides is putting you into the world of the characters; along side of them or reliving their adventures. Or some completely new adventure like Dinosaur or Pirates.
The Star Tours "have you seen this person" gag doesn't break that experience, it deepens the immersion.
I think seeing yourself as an avatar in a tank might be cool, again as a preshow gag, maybe as an explanation of the Avatar program and tech, the transition from your own body to the avatar. But I don't want to watch a movie of myself on a screen.
I want to bounce around a temple like Indy or get sucked into a computer simulation and race light bikes.

To this day I don’t understand how the Nintendo 3DS came out like 15 years ago, and no one to this day has figured out how to turn that into a tv. Screens in dark rides would actually be interesting and it might save movie theatres from going extinct.

A form of what you are talking about here was used in the Harry Potter Movies for Lord Voldemort where they had dots on the actor's face so that they could film the scene and the special effects people did their part to make him ultimately look like he did in the film.

This reminds me of my phone’s facial recognition setup and execution, in which you rotate your head while your face is showered with invisible photons to get a reading of all its contours (and the same/similar process is repeated in short each time you unlock your phone/app/bank account, etc). But in this case it’s done at a greater distance and with shrewder software to extrapolate the bits it might not have detected, and the in-between (animating term, right there) frames of time it can fill in based on the motion of your face it does capture.

Hey Brickey great video as always. They have started in a way the pre show 1st one, at GOFG the screen has a 3d look to it, (think its done with multi layers of screens and the lighting and such. Would be great if this was gonna be used for some attractions like HM
I thought of another good example that I think is even better than the other awesome ideas you had. Casting you as a superhero. How cool would it be to see yourself doing superhuman things? You could in a more literal sense “save” the world from whatever mishap the ride story dictates than say defeating the spider bots on Spiderman which feels a little detached.

@@HeyBrickeyI was thinking about this also. My uncle loves to ride rides and he had a stroke. He doesn’t like seeing his face anymore. Another with bad teeth who doesn’t smile anymore. I’d rather them just stop all this expensive technology and build cool rides that don’t need a scientist to pull off. It’s why space mountain still works. Matterhorn, all the great historic rides don’t need anything but a story and a good ride. You see how tianas is doing now. Now let just add more tech and think it’s going to go good. No thanks from my end. as always thanks for the videos brickey. This tech isn’t for me but it’s the stuff I want to see. Engineering construction and technology.
The title is misleading, even with this technology all you'll see is a flat screen, you'll still need 3D glasses to see it in 3D, or you'll need to combine it with other technologies to project a 3D image.
Completely agree. The technology is about real time 3D rendering extrapolated from scans and 2D images, not glasses-free stereoscopic 3D displays or projections like the Nintendo 3DS.
Imagine that first effect on the end part of Spaceship Earth. They take a photo of your face there and try to put it in a video and it looks pretty bad right now. Would be a great place to test the tech, I think.
Mission Space uses stereoscopic displays for 3D without the glasses.
I can see it being for characters and scenery within attractions. As for animating customer faces, it seems like the amount of computer power needed would be cost prohibitive. Several thousand customers/hour?

Before screens it was all 16mm film, complete with heavy scratches from playing on loop 1000s of times.
Quick flashing lights will increase seizures and prevent others from experiencing attractions.
How will beards affect jaw lines?
The testing with the dog shows them working on how to handle unpredictable situations with hair.
Many attractions have sudden bursts of light. I’m curious how folks that suffer seizures know which are safe and which aren’t.

I watched this because you said that we could avoid the 3d glasses - I don't use 3d glasses on Haunted Mansion.... How will they eliminate the 3d glasses on Avitar?
Haunted Mansion was an example of how this technology could work in the future.
3D glasses are used to create a different reality inside of attractions. This technology and many others Disney is working on create a different reality inside of an environment without the use of glasses. Therefore limiting the amount of attractions in the future that guests will need to wear glasses on.
Then what’s happening to the Zootopia show replacing Tough to be a bug?
Very cool and interesting tech my question is how well would it work with persons with darker skin tones. A known issue with this kind of algorithms.
I wonder if they are going to take away the 3D glasses from Star Tours?

Well you can’t do this and 3-D at the same time. And this is one of dozens of technologies they are working on to create similar results. So maybe it won’t fully replace it but one attraction here or there could opt for these technologies versus 3-D

Here comes Debbie Downer with a cautionary note - Overall the tech and possibilities sounds amazing. But, less so does a corporation now 'owning' your liking due to a very well hidden or legally twisted clause in their "terms of service", letting them use the scans for virtual characters in games, series and movies, without having to ask permission nor credit or compensation people. After all, it's easier and cheer to ask forgiveness than 'permission', right?
Yeah I total wanna support Disney basically making a real time facial recreation so that they can own anyone’s likeness that they do that to.
I hate the idea of this the because ppl exist WITHOUT MORALS.
As cool as it seems, I personally don't want to watch myself doing things. I want to actually be doing them.

Being blind in one eye means I really, really don’t like 3D glasses.
This technology is extremely dangerous if it falls into the hands of law enforcement or bad actors. For example: the ability to deepfake anyone to this degree will make it possible for literally anyone to be convicted of a crime with manufactured video evidence. Imagine what disgruntled employees or bitter exes could do with this technology. I'm not sure what is motivating WDI to pursue this but theme park enhancement is not what this will end up being used for primarily.
At no point in this video did you ever say what might replace 3D glasses.
I absolutely do. Disney is working on creating technology that creates augmented reality and requires the guests to not wear anything. That is stated more than once in this video. This is one of many technologies that will allow people to experience attractions and see special effects all around them with no glasses required.

Well you can’t do this technology or all the other many technologies Disney is working if your wearing 3D glasses so I would say these technologies are designed to replace some of the dependence on guests wearing ride glasses
@@HeyBrickey Technically...you can do the camera and strobe work BEFORE the glasses are handed out. They can work in concert. There are, in fact, glasses-free 3d technologies being investigated by large companies, Samsung most notably. Details are important, as you know, and if the full 3d potential of these capture and render technologies are to be realized, 3d projection will have to be employed. A 2d Pepper's ghost does not a true hologram nor a volumetric display make.

How stupid and pointless! Just like too many screens (hello Universal) this is lazy, boring tech too. A hitchhiking ghost with my face superimposed on the ghost projection when looking in the “mirror”? Hello! My face is already reflected in the mirror. Besides, I prefer the low-tech animatronic hitchhiking ghost figures. NONE of this is interesting, fun or appealing. Just like whenever they attempt to update Tomorrowland in time to become Yesterdayland or putting the equivalent of Xbox players in Innoventions. Get over the quest for tech or, instead of trying to impress with lame tech execution, how about just being freakin’ creative and develop fascinating and fun amusements and surprises. Quit overpaying your vaunted “imagineers” to pursue nonsense goosechases just to scarcely populate the increasingly bland parks and attractions with an oddball effect here or there and make them more immersive and compelling as an experience. No wonder why I never go to their parks anymore. Disney has completely lost their way.
