Garbage Men at Work

  • Every year in Elk Grove, Republic Services sends out a rear loader and Tink claw crew to collect bulky waste set outs in an assigned neighborhood. Each neighborhood is given a month when the pickups will occur. The set outs are known to be very heavy during certain points in the year, which results in normal backlogs that get cleared up over the week. However, on this particular week the crew had fallen behind and requested help from the yard. Two extra helpers arrived from the yard as assisted the crew in loading the truck. This made for a much faster paced video and is one of my favorites in the Bulky Waste Collection.
    The title "Garbage Men at Work" was selected by one of the swampers on the route, Keith.

    That's a slick way of running a big bulk route. A 4 man crew and the big claw really cleans up quick.

    Wow as I get older and watch these videos I do realize finally what a wasteful Nation we really are how many good items of furniture and appliances are simply thrown out because they're not the newest and the greatest and the best and nobody wants them. I cannot imagine if America would have to go back to an earlier time were you appreciated what you had. Countries all over the world would be grateful to even dream of having something like this that were simply throwing away

      Watch rubbish compacting videos in Australia and Europe. It's the same thing. Perfectly usable items going into the truck. That's what all developed nations seem to do.
      It's sad, especially when global warming appears to be a runaway effect. We all should be reducing, reusing and recycling.

      Yeah, we don't normally use this many people. It was one of those "all hands on deck" calls which resulted in a lot of help. One of the laborers here works in the yard normally, the other guy drives a flatbed truck and tags houses all day, notifying them that there clean up day is coming. They were just so behind that day so they needed the help. Made for a fun video.

    Count your blessings that we even have garbage men, especially for the amount of items that we put into the trash expecting the garbage men to take it. We're lucky that we don't have to take our trash to the landfill ourselves. There are plenty of perfectly good items that we can give to someone who needs them instead of leaving it for the garbage men. I believe in respecting our garbage men by not leaving them with too much work. What's wrong? Nobody has any respect for our garbage men? They're important people in our community.

      I agree with some of your comment. But the reality is if we didn't leave all this junk for them to pick up, they'd be out of work. If you really want to show appreciation for the trashmen, give them ALL your work. The more trash you set out equals more work which equals more money for them.

    • @25mfd
      @25mfd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you misunderstood my point. when I say "more work which equals more money", I mean that in the sense of a continuing paycheck. the more trash customers setout, you will continue to get a paycheck.

    • @robertbaker50
      @robertbaker50 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If people want to show their appreciation for Trashmen, don't put 50 lb Plus in one bag, for example cat litter and dirt..Take your grass cuttings and dirt and go dump it Overhill somewhere. Leave your lid on so rats, raccoons, and possums don't make it their home.. and leave your lid on so when it rains the can doesn't get flooded, It wont be taken.

    I don't think this is the regular pick-up. They have several guys on-site and the machine loading because this was probably a special annual or semi-annual bulk pick up where they will pick up big things that can't fit into trash cans, like Christmas trees and mattresses, without charging a separate fee.

    • @cagarbagetrucks
      @cagarbagetrucks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was a specialized pickup, aimed for reducing illegal dumping of large, hard-to-handle items. It only occurs one-per-year (at the time of recording). It has since expanded to three appointments per year, at no additional cost.

      I agree that residents should take more efforts to recycle these items prior to them hitting the curb. I am glad to say that a good majority of these items are sorted out at a Materials Recovery Facility and recyclables are removed prior to being sent to the landfill.

    Well I wouldn't hire them, as they left part of the collection including a bed end on the roadside. How can they afford 4 men and 2 vehicles to do this, and can't see how it saves money. Here in the UK we have recycling centres and people use it. We also have kerbside recycling bins that are emptied every 2 weeks, and you can put paper, cardboard, glass, tins of all types and empty aerosols. We also have a plastic recycling pickup every 2 weeks, for all our plastics instead of like you in the USA putting everything in landfill. Some of the items thrown away. could have been donated to thrift and charity stores or are you to bone idle to do it? Come on America get to grips, before it's too late???

    Its time to enforce some of these laws nation wide or put paper work in place to let citizens know you need to purchase your own private pick up or take your items to the dump cite. A abundance of debris is a eye sore and health hazard to our neighborhoods. I also understand the waste and costly use of machinery that you are commenting on that need to be resolved as well.

    I really didn't see much change in time with the extra helpers. To me there were too many guys for 1 truck. Seems they would get in the way of each other. They should have sent an extra rl out there for extra help. That way the extra helpers could hand toss some piles in another area. That would seem more efficient. Also weird not seeing Keith in a tractor. Lol.

    • @cagarbagetrucks
      @cagarbagetrucks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, the extra helpers worked well at some point, especially during some parts not shown on camera because they were pretty fast. They did end up trying to send out the ex BFI one, but Citrus Heights needed to use it. Yeah Keith and the other driver switches spots every other week.

    Items that are in good shape should be donated to second hand stores not trashed. We need to use more natural renewable resources for our everyday products plastics should be biodegradable to degrade back into our
    Natual enviromnt.

    • @cagarbagetrucks
      @cagarbagetrucks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. It is always best to donate and reuse items verus throwing them away. Many scavengers and folks driving by often stop and pick through what is left out and reuse and recycle whatever they can. Everything collected here is also sent to a sorting center where up to 90% of the items collected is recycled.

    • @cagarbagetrucks

      These are residential streets, so the driver and helps all keep an eye out on traffic when they are stopped in the roadway. Most of the time, they try to stay in the shoulder and use the strobes and hazards to warn drivers. If they have to collect on a busy street, a pickup truck will follow the crew with strobes and hazards on to block the lane.
