It's good for newcomers, old fans probably prefer other games in the franchise with more complex systems and mechanics.

It's also good for old fans like me who were bored of the way the franchise has stalled for like 10+ years.
I've played all of them since Symphonia and I think there are way too few changes between Vesperia and Berseria even though they're like 10 years apart.
Arise is trying things, and while not all of them are great, it's a bold game which brings me hope for the future of the series.
The last innovative Tales of game before Arise was Graces f, and incidentally it's also my favorite precisely because of its experimental yet amazing gameplay.

Most ppl will just play the newest entry anyway since there's no simple way to play older entries if you don't have a bunch of old systems sitting around. Although I believe you can play the majority of the highest rated entries if you have a ps3 and 4 and maybe a 3ds for Abyss. Personally I think berseria is the best modern intro to the series as it has modern qol features but still feels more similar to classic entries but I'm guessing they're not going back to that look and feel if arise did really well

I think Tales of Arise did so well because of the success of Besaria. Unfortunately I can't say the combat in Arise is the greatest because it just felt like the developers made the enemies and bosses sponges instead of making the encounters more difficult.
Besaria is my number 2, the combat is great as long as you play as Velvet since her combos flow so well. But if you were forced to play any of the other character the combat is a lot slower paced and static.
My favorite has to Xillia, I loved the combat in that game and the tag team mechanic, it was clunky but made fights really enjoyable. All the characters had smooth combos and I felt like I could constantly go on the offensive.

I know a lot of people didn't like the turn the story took in the second half, but I loved it. It going absolutely buck wild with its story was fantastic. I also think that it does an excellent job of explaining some of the narrative issues in the first half the game by showing that the problems were intentional and were that way for a reason.
Also, I loved the romance. When I heard it was like only the second time that the main characters had kissed it made me less interested in other Tales games.

Tales of Arise is definitely different from its predecessor in terms of graphic and combats mechanics. The finishing move is truly satisfying. However, the skits after battle and exploration is quite..... underwhelming. Sure, we do have some "dialogue" after our battle, but there's no animation, which was a classic among Tales game. Same goes for the skits during our exploration. I was really hoping they stick the skits style to Berseria or Xillia, but they use a 3D animation which in my opinion, a little bit disappointed. Let's just say there's been a lack of animation that portrayed the scene. There are so many potential if they implement the classic style of skits from previous game. If they implement the idea to be different from the others, I can't complain because it sure is.
Just like the other comments said, the enemy will be spongy on the second half of the story, and ohh boyy, its gonna get a little bit repetitive after that.
Tales of Arise is a great stepping stone to promote new fans about the Tales franchise. For us veterans, there are other titles that are slightly better than Arise.

If you asked me "Is Tales of Arise definitively the best one?" I'd respond:
"Have you ever met a Tales fan before? XD" It's impossible to really define an ideal. Ask ten of them and you'll get ten completely different answers on which games are the best, including at least one highly popular title they don't like and at least one controversial one they love. All different ones.
If you asked me "Is this your favorite of the bunch? One that compares well with the other games?" I'd say:
"Hell yeah.!" I felt like this game did some big work on a lot of problems that I felt were building up in the series as far as gameplay. I feel the story does do a REALLY good job with its main theme and Alphen is a better, more aged-up version of that main protag trope in how driven he is, and how he exemplifies the theme. The systems for gear and progression really compile a lot of what the series has learned so far through many of its other entries. I wish the second half was extended, included a certain subset of bosses more in the story and better explained the interesting premise of its main villain instead of expecting you to read into it yourself, but I did love the romance of Alphen and Shionne. :) The game even managed to make a big impact on my life personally thanks to some of its deeper scenes.
My only issue with Berseria was more on the gameplay side. I actually only had two particular issues with it, they just happened to really drive me up the wall. XD I love the cast to death though. Also the Xillia games are perfect choices to follow Arise if you happened to start with it and, (for the moment), if you have a PS3. Arise shares some similar character combat styles and really good features first seen in Xillia 1 & 2 (and then oddly skipped in Zestiria and Berseria).

Agreed. Zestiria is my least favorite in the series. It's story is so generic and it's characters felt that way too. The battle system is so unnecessarily complicated too. I really like Berseria though. It looks almost identical to Zestiria graphically, but it's battle system is simplified and more fluid. The characters in Berseria are some of the best in the entirety of the series. Magilou is so good at lightening the mood with her ridiculous antics, and Velvet is a perfect female anti-hero. The dungeon design is awful in both of them though, but I'm glad Arise made steps to improve the dungeons presentation.

Because I liked Berseria a lot, I even bought Vesperia (DE) and Zestiria for my Ps4, but these two in my opinion are not the same level as Berseria, but they are good games too. When I finished Arise, I had no doubts, this was the Berseria level game, and to be honest, it surpassed it. I also watched The Abyss Anime, and I thought the story was very excellent, too bad I didn't play the game. Among the ones I've played, I'd put them in this order from best to worst:

It's a sad truth for BN... They either can in technology or in story. Most of there games from "new generation" were great in tech, but not good in other aspects.
Tales of Graces, Tales of Zestiria are good at visual but...
Abyss, Xillia, Berseria are not so good in tech, but the story and characters are great.

I will be honest with you. Tales of Arise is visual a great game, also the combat is good (but gets old eventually). The thing I "disliked" most about it, is that it's linear. You can't explore like Tales of Vesperia for example. The game is trying to make you feel like you have freedom, but real isn't giving you any. Still a great game, don't get me wrong. But less than I had hoped for, which is a miss.

As a Tales fan since the PS2 era, all I will say is that Arise is the only Tales game that I didnt finish. I am used to the weak stories, but the combat and main cast of characters are the main reason I like Tales Of games, and unfortunately only the combat in Arise was good, but even that was ruined by the extreme lack of enemy variation and completely braindead AI.
Repetitive battles and the party members dying constantly eventually made me give up on the game.
I think Arise might be a good entry game into the series, but just so you know how much better other Tales Of games are. Though I personally started with Tales Of Abyss many years ago, and that one is still second best Tales game for me, right after Xillia 2.

  • @lukeamparo6586
    @lukeamparo6586 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Personally, it’s the best entry for newcomers in the franchise. And it handles romance the best. Combat is at its most refined with no convoluted upgrade system.
Getting skill points can also lead to funny character dynamics via skits.
Also some players may be unfamiliar to anime tropes so this entry eases them in till the later half.
Getting invested in characters depends on whether you catch the skits. You get the most out of them via skits. Seeing their personal dynamics in different settings. Otherwise the main story does okay for the main duo. Mileage for the side characters varies on personal preference.
This is from someone who has completed Zestiria and Berseria. And partway in Vesperia.

This game already outsold Berseria's lifetime sales (5 years) in less than a year. It's user score on Metacritic is one of the highest in the series. It snagged RPG of the Year in 2021. Hell, Davidvinc ranked this as his #2 Tales game and he's a huge Tales fan (played all 19 main titles). So yea, I would say this definitely ranks in the Top 3 Tales games.

I like Alphen better than Velvet but he is not as good of a protagonist as say Luke or Yuri. The story does drop off after the 5 main areas and it has one of the worst main antagonists in the series. But the combat was great (enemies did get too spongey at the end for my liking though). And the soundtrack is so good. So yeah I agree. It’s a great game but not my favorite Tales game. I'm playing it right now and am really enjoying it. I'm a longtime Tales of fan starting with Tales of Phantasia for the Super Famicom. So far Arise is one of the very best IMO opinion, although I'm probably 20 hours in so I haven't completed the game to be able to judge it fully. The graphics are excellent on PC and it runs at high framerates and resolutions without being overly taxing on your computer. The battle system is fun and fluid, and not overly complicated. Difficulty is absolutely perfect for me with occasional wipeouts while facing bosses unprepared. The regular mobs of enemies are pretty spongy, but aren't so aggressive that they are a threat of giving you a game over. The cast of characters are likable with developing relationships and defined roles within the party both in terms of personality and in battle. Music is so-so, but Tales games are never amazing in this regard. The story is fine for me so far, although everyone seems to think the second half goes off the rails. I'll see when I get there, but I'd recommend it from my experience.

Tales of Arise really needs its story in the later 2/3'ds of the game reworked. It started off okay with the world building and character introductions. Then the face palming started with the main story around the time you get to the last 2 party member's. A few of the character's could be really worked on. The spoiler thing about Alphen does not affect his gameplay mechanics at all other then just a useless visual effect. I would be fine with him never remembering the past. The crafting system is a pain. I honestly gave up on farming for the high level mats with the skills I wanted on them. So much rng. The game is fun, the music is great and the world is beautiful. I just do not see how they thought the story was good. They just have a bunch of uninterested reviewers go over it and be like its fine. It feels like the the story writer changed partway through the game. The biggest thing I liked was the glam system. So I could equip the current strongest weapon and not worry about it looking ugly and not matching the color theme of my outfit. I would of purposely kept an older weapon equipped to look good. If the game had multiple endings and more main story choices, it would of really ramped up its replay ability. I enjoyed the game despite its flaws and would recommend.
Edit: I also think the time skip in the halfway point of the game was stupid. Its been months and they still act like they did when they first got together.

A lot of things are 6-7 out of 10 like combat, characters (dohalim is very good though), main story is 6 to me but I loved the scifi ending. I hope the next games will bring back the feeling of scale, arise world feels tiny and linear. I would love the things to be improved in the next games based on the great presentation qualities of arise. Regarding the features missing, I was really missing 1) coop 2) worldmap travel 3) don't like saves / fast travel. prefer savepoints / means of fast transportation. 4) puzzles / better dungeons 5) ex dungeon. The game was very enjoyable, sometimes a bit more annoying even for a tales game) but I always wanted to continue playing it the next day and was thinking about playing the game when I was not doing it, which I think is a good thing) Can't wait for the next tales.
