Interesting use of character mode. Quite impressive, but without instructions I would be totally lost as to what I'm supposed to be doing. Never even heard of this version of Popeye before today!
I bought this in 1990 from a clearance bin and I was completely lost. I still have the game today. The instructions give you some hints on what to do, but as a kid I could not figure it out. I loved the graphics though.
i finished this when I was about 8 which i was rather chuffed about.i also managed to complete trap door too following a guide.i hated trap door 2 though.
I can't quite figure out how the graphics work. There are probably sprites used, but it also looks like it makes use of Extended Background Color Mode?
I don't think they're using sprites at all. Looks like it's all (high resolution) character based. This game is very impressive from a programmer standpoint.
@@baardbi I was thinking about sprites being used to augment what is obviously mostly character art. Extended Background Colors are another way to get hi-res dual-color character art on a C64.
Hmmm, would you look at that. So THATs what this game was about... Hmmm. The fuse is for lighing the cannon. The Bottle is to avoid getting burned by the dragon. What does the spinach do?
yeah can of worms was easy. Some later ones were tricky but perfectly doable. I actually found it easier than this game which i never managed to finish.. but if memory serves i think i did finish trapdoor.
I got it on budget release for £2.99 I think. Trouble is, as a child the puzzles were too obscure, particularly the slot machine puzzle - how the hell were you meant to work out how to "hold" the reels?! Finally got my money's worth 25 years later :p
I bought this at a clearance bin in 1990 in Norway (still have it). I could never figure out how to do much of anything in this game. The graphics were nice, but the game itself was way too complicated for me to figure out. Thank you very much for doing this playthrough. It was very interesting to see what the game has to offer.
always enjoyed this game, but it's also disappointing they didn't keep the bright colours that the Speccy and CPC had, and didn't make the most of the SID chip.. those sound effects are pretty bad.
@William White I still have my C64c, i even have popeye. But i have also seen games with slightly brighter colours, although perhaps they just looked that way, I'm not a fucking computer expert, i know fuck all about computers.. while i still have my c64c and used other 8 bits machines it doesn't mean i'm an expert. the c64 colour pallet isn't something i've really thought about. *Anyway, you don't have to be a knob about it*
@William White No, you only know that because i just told you.. ffs. What part of *don't be a knob* do you not understand? you wont get your point across or have any conversation with me if your going to be a plonker about it. Next time cut the shirty attitude. As you said the other day " It deserve no further discussion" yet you can't stop tapping that keyboard.
Jesus , Popeye bangs the shit out of Olive at the end of the game

Can't say it's a great game, but that rendition of the Popeye theme is quite catchy.
Played this as a kid. Loved it! Could never finish it though ^^;
Quite an accomplishment from a programmer's point of view, but torture to actually play because of its extremely slooooooow game play.
What is it they are doing at the end? Please tell me they're not... oh my. Need to wash my brain now.
Hahaha, dat game. xD
Also, Bluto is just outside :)
they fuck
They raised the roof.
Literally!
Time stamp: 20:30
Yes, I did have Trapdoor. Like Popeye, I found it pretty difficult and could only manage the first task (can of worms if memory serves me correct).
I have to admit. That is pretty awesome.

@@rodneylives OK. I see.
Me: "Haven't you played your original arcade game, Popeye?"
Popeye: "Yes, I did, actually. It's nothing like this garbage!"
Hmmm, would you look at that. So THATs what this game was about... Hmmm.
The fuse is for lighing the cannon.
The Bottle is to avoid getting burned by the dragon.
What does the spinach do?
Extra life. You can see him loosing one can on purpose to fit another heart into inventory at 10:02
Vertically the same as the Spectrum version which I prefer as it's more colourful.
@MerryFrosterSantacom Not the best some mind, but good point mate👍🏻
this is the larry of commodore 64
same here. finishing this was verging on impossible.
one of the WEIRDEST games!
Yes, the best word is "weird".
Wow what a unique specimen...spailour man?
Bought this for my C64, couldn't figure it out at all, I assumed my copy was broken but it seems not from this

i never could work out which keys the doors would open
He had to go through a lot for that shag.
Jetzt seh ich auch endlich mal das Ende, wir habens nie ganz durchgeschaft
Where can I download this rom? I always find the coin-op Popeye roms.

GOOD GOOD GAME!!!! I LOVE GAME
did you ever play trapdoor? Very similar graphics and control system to this game. But trapdoor was a better game.
I don't get it.....
always enjoyed this game, but it's also disappointing they didn't keep the bright colours that the Speccy and CPC had, and didn't make the most of the SID chip.. those sound effects are pretty bad.
@William White There are plenty of c64 games with bright colours, they could have done it here,
@William White Plenty of c64 game didn't look 'dull' popeye didn't look dull they just toned them down a bit too much. They could have gone lighter.
@William White Yet the colours on that chart look a bit brighter than the clip on youtube. I've had a c64 for decades, i still have it and use it.
@William White I still have my C64c, i even have popeye. Not as fancy as i remember it
The ending 20:43 😳
That does not look anywhere near 50 fps
Ese Popeye parece Condorito

Colours so drab on all c64 games. Much better on the Amstrad inc this game
Pero por que se mueve tanto el techo al ganar?????jajaja
Nunca lo pude ganar, pero de niño no me hubiera dado cuenta del detalle jajajjaaj
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤@@juanmariocortezrochabrun8687
Bullshit game,slow and unplayable
The Spectrum version might be better - that's the original platform I believe
