a speedrunner working as a playtester to help get rid of a bunch of skips then IMMEDIATELY finding a skip for the whole game as soon as it comes out is so funny
You have them fix all the easy and actually game breaking one, but keep the hardest/biggest skips in and viola you have weeks more practice than everybody else at a strat you "just happened to find" a day or two after release.
But more importantly@@nhooj8882, it makes sure there *is* still *a* skip. Imagine how much less fun Skyrim would be if they had a speedrunner patch out, iunno, horse physics.
Sure it's a bit cheaty if the speedrunner does actually leave in only the hardest ones, but intentionally leaving glitches in cause theyre fun and dont break the game should be common practice in the gaming industry for everything. Sadly everything has to be uberpolished nowadays :( so I'll still take the "almost everything but the really out-of-the-way glitches are patched"

Any% is usually better than low% tho, this made me think of the low% Zelda game where you stare at a rupee for 19 hours

And they did find a skip in White Palace, but it simply meant that the percentage of game completion went down from 26% to 23% and the bee grind is now even longer because of it
Can't wait for the 4th chapter where the prototype will watch the player do backflips and other forms of acrobatics seconds into the game to avoid even seeing him.

If we do see the prototype in chapter 4, I hope this happens. It would be even better if it happened within the first day.
Favourite thing to happen in speedruns is it getting an "unrestricted" category. When the glitches go so far even any% runners can't handle it.
The Zelda: Majora's Mask Any% immediately comes to mind, to the point where they had to instigate a private vote to split the category into regular and "No Major Glitches".

Arbitrary Code Execution. Pretty much, writing and executing code with precise inputs, to do stuff like warp to the credits and such
@@Goldenblade14to add onto your other response it's pretty crazy stuff. There's a certain sequence of buttons you press that a game will interpret as code, code like playing the credits and thus "beating the game".
I believe the original pokemon games can do this with like 5-10 minutes of setup, and then you can start a brand new save basically at the end screen and thus technically kinda a 0 second run.
This can be done in some of the early Mario games as well. There's a TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) that instead of finishing a speedrun will actually code in/execute code for a system similar to Mario Maker within the game itself.
One of the Zelda games (maybe OoT) requires you to like... play another game on the same console, I think? You spend like 5 minutes playing Zelda and 20 minutes setting up code in something else. Then when you go back to Zelda you can activate the stored inputs to go to the end of the game or something?
It's absolute black magic to see the first time. And I'm honestly still not entirely sure how it works or if the speedrun community is just collectively punking people into thinking they aren't actually wizards and/or cheating.

Why aren't there more animations of speedruns of games like this?
Literal spoon man grabs chairs and barrels to launch themself across the void before proceeding to open and close the door on a cat for a couple minutes
terminalmontage has some good vids on his channel about speedruns, the mario and link ones are pretty good
I know about Terminal, but I think he mostly sticks to more triple A titles like Nintendo and Capcom. Indie game animatics for more recent games like this are much less common, though. @@onesimplefool5250

Actually the speedrun tournament was a no major glitches or exploits tournament so that isn't where they would have seen the glitches they patched out. Also one of the glitches they patched was one a number of casual players were causing by accident so it wasn't only to target speedrunners either.

i love the hourly hydration tts, especially when it makes its way into a video. if i'm doing homework (which i often am while i binge spiff) it reminds me to BEBO AGUA OR PERISH, and frankly, it is helpful
0:43 which is why I prefer other categories of speedrun though it’s interesting to see some of the crazy stuff that happens in any% runs with frame perfect skips that take skill not just luck to pull off.

See, the thing about glitch hunting is, unless someone else has given you an idea of how to recreate a glitch, you kinda gotta bonk everything into everything XD
Generally, physics objects = possiblity for jank and clipping.
More polygons in an object means more weird funky stuff, doll head is a pretty weird shape so pretty weird polygons so many of em
there are general characteristics which often cause glitches and get checked out for jank. its pattern recognition that only makes sense with knowedge of common causes.
physics objects and corners are very common offenders, especially so if the player can manipulate the physics object, and even if corners don't work a lot of normally unreachable places that janky physics can get you to either have poor or non-existent collision. once you're out of bounds you just need to figure out the most optimal place to emerge from OOB and suddenly you have a potentially massive skip
I saw a face in the texture Spiff clipped through at 35:35 for a frame and it was a jumpscare I was NOT prepared for.

Your comment on the beginning of the video is why i enjoy other types of speedruns and having different categories more. With a lot of games, there comes a point that an extremely broken glitch comes along and, while the glitch is cool from a technical standpoint, it becomes horrible to watch as an audience.
In situations like that couldn’t a category split occur?

I think it should be made very clear to everyone that AirUp’s performance is actually subjective. To some, it really works. To others, it doesn’t work at all or it “tastes” like dirt.
I am a weird spot in the middle, where some flavors work well, others don’t work at all, some taste like garbage. Before you throw yours away thinking it sucks, know that your experience may be different than others’, and that you may have gotten a faulty (scentless) or overflavored (pungent garbage) pod.

I agree with the sentiment about any% runs, back when RE4 remake came out I wanted to get into runs for that game because of a streamer I watched but then they discovered some glitch that involved da manipulation via having an enemy grab you for a certain length of time that killed a lot of runs just to make 1 boss fight go faster. although personally I feel like it does depend on the game and how well made it is and what kind of mechanics the game itself has.

i can rarely catch streams, but i watch a lot of vods (longer, will survive my homework sessions and i can finish them on my own for fun) -- seeing things in videos that i typically see on stream or in vods is always really fun to me

I remember hearing Spiff say that his goal was to make videos that people would watch multiple times.
Normally, I hate watching things again, but I just enjoy these too much
I think the most appeal towards any% is how it's cool to see a completed run, how much the game can be broken for the player's advantage. To the detriment of having to suffer through training extremely unreliable stuff
now, I don't get banning strats, sometimes it makes sense like some games that have glitches that only work in specific physical copies that can't be produced digitally can make those runs a pay2win thing, but in this case of playing during the cutscene, why would that strat be banned while the chair that seemed even more unreliable stayed?
Wine also gives me a headache!! Turns out there’s things in wine that cause that - like tannins. Some people are more sensitive to tannins in wine and other products. I can’t eat pomegranates because of the tannins.

Certainly was an interesting choice of a first time speedrun. I'm definitely never doing an unrestricted Any% run, those chairs gave me an aneurysm.
It's for the exact reasons you mentioned that a lot of games have "NMG" or "No Major Glitches" categories, or at least "No OOB" or "No out of bounds" categories. Without categories like that, you often just get stuck pulling the lever of a slot machine where the only reward is number go brr

there's something poetic and fitting about speedrunners trying to find the quickest way to get through Poppy Playtime that let's them skip as much of the game as humanly possible within the first 24 hours of it launching. Honestly its what the series deserves.

I feel like Any% runs are the equivalent to how people say puns are the lowest form of wit but for speedruns. Like after a point its skill-less and purely rng, and probably not fun for anyone after a point. I do appreciate the video on this because its a very nice explanation for something that I recognize but haven't been able to put into words.
