  • In this video, I talk about the new Fujifilm GFX line of equipment. More specifically, I discuss the GF 30mm Tilt/shift lens and whether it is worth purchasing. Does photography equipment inspire you to head out into the wilds, or is it just a tool?

For me, it's like romance-a deep emotional connection with the equipment. It awakens something indescribable. Pressing the shutter button, seeing the shot in Lightroom, brings immense joy. Even if the picture is disappointing, it's still mine, created with the same effort and love. It's hard to explain.

I have to agree with what Baliviephoto said. New equipment can be very inspiring but ultimately what motivates comes from within ourselves to get out and film what we love.

Finally able to watch your video. Earlier I came across a Facebook post from Guy Tal who quoted Ansel Adams:
"If photography were to become a difficult mechanical medium, and if it were possible to explain the actual lack of need for most materials and gadgets, many publications would have no reason to exist, and I believe pictures, on the whole, would be better. Photographers have been led to make a fetish of equipment, and are falsely encouraged in superficial concepts and methods resulting in unfortunate misconceptions of the basic potentialities of photography."

So much for our GAS and FOMO. 😂

You mentioned that new equipment might make it easier, well I get inspired by making things more difficult. When you have to think more, get more involved, work harder for your images, then I’m inspired.

That screaming you hear....is me cringing bc I would GLADLY purchase that 4x5 but, when you said use the money to move to a better area well....we are in that process now. I think I'll go cry now!!😢😢 I WILL SAY .....I received a Bronica medium format camera as a birthday gift some months ago, and everything you said about in inspiring me and slowing my workflow down and finding great joy in producing a slide of film into a pleasing photo. It is a challenge. I haven't shot film in years, and I used to be fairly good at remembering settings. But, what joy it does bring. I shot some portraits of a coworker and got several good photos from a single roll of 120. Great stuff as always Grumpy! Excuse me whilst I go sob on my pillow!!

Just watched your promo video for FujiFilm, a year ago. Makes me wanna move to Vancouver Island. Such beauty in those ancient forests. Also shows me it’s not the best photographers that get most followers. Entertainment and emotion is more important it seems. Nothing wrong with that. I love Gavin and Thomas for their display of passion and emotions. But I also love your artistic quality.

I continually have to remind myself that the older DSLR full-frame Nikon (D750) is producing some very good images for me anytime I go out in the field and see Z9's, A7's, GFX', etc. For a hobby, I don't need to spend thousands every couple of years. Thank you for your common sense. I've shot large format film cameras and enjoy them, but I'm ok where I'm at with my gear. Maybe next week I'll think diferently, ha! 😆

I hear you about selling your film equipment. I recently re-engaged with film and finally have determined that film makes me unhappy and electronic photography makes me happy. I have my old cameras on display cause they really aren't worth anything, just sentimental value, but I'll never use them again. I love my Nikon D850: I know how to use it and it never fails to produce amazing photos.

Hello Adam, you need to get back in the field , we miss that! There was some real passion in the view camera scene. But as you said, we can very easily focus stack. I agree, sell your 4x5 stuff and put it into the new lenses. The only thing you miss will be the lifts. Just imagine focus stacking a tilt and shift lense! Good grief. Fun video thanks again.

When I finally sold my 4x5 equipment, and my Horseman VH-R (with 3 lenses, 2 6x9 back, and a 6x7 back), I could have sat in a corner and cried. I kept my Mamiya RZ kit a little longer, but it went, too. I just didn't use them anymore.

I completely agree re: kit potentially inspiring, funnily though it has sent me in the opposite direction. I've been in tech my whole life (well, from 7 years old anyway, and I've likely got another 20 years of it before I can retire). Using computers for my hobbies does inspire me anymore. Consequently I'm now down to 1 digital camera, and recently picked up a 4x5 technical camera. There's a world of new things to learn, in processing, and analogue printing. Nothing makes you plan your shots like knowing you've got 1 shot, and a > 3kg of gear to get set up just right.

I use the Techart adapter and 3 Canon tilt shift lenses on my GFX 100s. They work fantastically well and give the necessary depth of field not to have to stack (which let's face it use a lot of disc space and is a bit of a pain) One could buy all three lenses and the adapter for less than that one 30mm fuji tilt lens. I use a 24mm, 45mm and 90mm (the 90mm has some weird colours until a preset is applied) Image quality is great. Nice to see the 4x5, I haven't used my Mamiya RZ67 mkii in ages but would be loathed to sell it, such a different reward when an image comes good. Hard to argue with your 4x5 work Adam, but it got you to where you are now.

That's a very important message you told with this video. I for example like using filter systems, even if it would be much easier to add a gradient later in post, I prefer doing it in the field just for the fun and process of it. Let's say making an image on location as close as to where you've imagined it previously instead of just snapping images and saying "yeah, I'll correct that later in post". It's so much more satisfying.

I do think, among other things that do, that the equipment inspires me. I decided to get into LF photography, mostly because I never had before and wanted that experience of slowing down, purposeful photography. And it has helped with that. I started with a Linhof Super Technika IV, for a bit. But it more often than not got in the way (too hard to mount my filters, super hard to use at 90mm or less), but I still like the experience. Now I’ve move on to a Chamonix 4x5 and I can say that that camera inspires me….it inspires me to produce photos that live up to the craftsmanship that is in that camera.

    Adam,
There are some wonderful photographs you showed in this film that I’ve not seen before.
I think you make an excellent point in that if the camera one has, whatever it is, keeps making one want to pick it up and use it, then the practice of making photographs with that camera will make one a better photographer.
If I was out in the field with my current camera trying to frame something up and I make a photograph and somebody turned around and said, “Now shoot that on this here Hasselblad”, the chances are it would only give me a higher resolution version of the same image. If the composition had things in it that were distracting, or excluded things that might make it a more compelling photograph, the camera itself won’t improve that, only practice will.
A Stradivari might make a violinist want to practice more than whatever violin they were using before. But off the bat, the Strad might not bring about a noticeable improvement straight away.

Good gear definitely helps to inspire me to get out. But once I’m out its the light, always the light. But I do really like using my old vintage Yashica TLR. There is something about the TLR experience that is different to an SLR or even a Hasselblad style waist finder. But while the TLR often provides the spur to get me out I couldn’t use it full time, it’s it too limiting. Even when I had a Mamiya C33 with multiple lenses my Fiju ST901 35mm still did most of the work. Cameras are tools but any craftsman will tell you that some tools feel better than others. I dabble in art(painting) and even there I have brushes that just feel better than others.

I AGREE with you 100%. Last month our local camera club had a rummage sale and I sold my Lowe Pro Photo trekker. I had $100 bucks on it. Two folks looked at it. One wanted it to haul around his 4X5 camera and gear. He wanted it cheap. The second person wanted it but money was tight for her. She had another pack and someone wanted it and offered her $50 for it. Before accepting she asked if I'd come down to $50 and we made the deal. For me it is not about getting maximum amount of money it is finding the right home for my surplus gear. That is what I am selling, I always have the memories.

I still have my Sinar and ShenHao, but I have too little time to use them often. TS lenses are great. They bring the 4x5 feeling back to medium format photography. However, they are not a panacea. As soon as you have a tall slender object like a spruce in the middle ground, you can't tilt and you have to focus stack. Nevertheless, these are nice lenses that Fuji has brought out. However, the 110 TS lens appeals to me much more than the 30mm. It helps to play with the plane of focus, especially at close range. In the wide-angle range you rarely have to deal with a small depth of field and often 2 shots are enough to create a completely sharp image.

I have no doubt, that being forced to slow down and take your time, with the 4x5, has enabled you an advantage far ahead of other photographers. Although, there's many ways to get ahead, but this is such a good one, I think. Wholesome, clever, and obviously clicking with your abilities at the right time. There's no point wondering why there has been an analog wave for years now, on several fronts. There's not just fascination. There's something better connected to us human beings. Thanks for explaining the tilt-shift. I've never understood the point until now. I guess you had a lot of great examples. Makes me wonder why it's not more common. My camera and gear, are just tools. It's the locations and the travel that inspires, and the results of the work.

I have a tilt shift adaptor to use my Bronica 645 lenses on my Olympus camera. Used it for a few shots to try it out, but struggle to think of uses for general photography Could also be its manual focus and I'm lazy.
I can see the T/S on the new Fuji macro being very useful to maximise depth of field as often hard to focus stack insects etc.
Sadly I can't afford any of them, and I don't do macro photography :)
But I can dream of winning the lottery. £17k for new camera and 3 lens!!
I'd love a 4x5 but think I'd use it half a dozen times. Wish I'd not traded in my RZ67 for pennies but at the time I didn't think I'd use it again. Still have the 645. But not put film through it for years.
Great video, lots to think about.

  • @blivieriphoto

I think new gear can be inspiring, but it only lasts a little while. True inspiration to get out "into the wilds" has to come from within. If it's not there, gear will only get you out for so long.
Last Christmas I bought myself a new Nikon camera & lens. For the price of a used kidney you'd think the excitement would have lasted a good long time. The camera did pretty much the same job as my Z6, just with more megapixels. And my new lens did the same job as my previous 100-400, they both got me to 400mm! 😁
But when I bought the Z6 in 2020 I was extremely inspired! That was a huge step up from my previous camera, the Nikon D4. Smaller, lighter, IBS, a flippy screen, everything about that camera was so new and inspiring, and my excitement for the camera lasted a good long time. Same with when I bought my first new/used Tamron 100-400 in 2019. Getting to 400mm was a huge game changer and step up from my 70-200.
So, does photography equipment inspire me? I guess if the equipment gives me more opportunities and makes difficult techniques simpler, that new excitement lasts longer, but that's not what drives me to get out "into the wilds". I still get excited even if I'm just out and about with my old cell phone. (Although I kick myself when I take fantastic photos with it and should have had my camera instead, but that's for another topic. lol) But in the end, both the 'price of a kidney' camera and 2019 model cell phone are just tools.

if there's anyone I would love to see use the tilt shift lens, it would be you.
well mostly i dont know anyone to follow to see them use it in the first place haha.
I certainly think initially the camera can be an inspiration to people and one does it best no others like leica, that once you hold on to the camera, they like to talk about how the user today are holding a piece of history of all the previous leica cameras before it. That story of doing documentaries, is certainly a point of inspiration to move people forward when using that camera and create other good works of documentaries etc.
i think the idea of the camera becomes a tool much later - when a person wants their camera to work efficiently and bring one's imagination/vision to life.

Having owned the Nikon 24mm T/S lens, I had a huge amount of enjoyment from using the lens from the results to the technical challenges it overcame to the ones it created (it is indeed a skill to use one proficiently!) did it ultimately make me a better photographer, probably not, did it add to the the enjoyment i had from photography, most defintely yes! Love the image at 12:53 :) So what can you do on a rail/bellows that you wouldn't be able to do with a T/S lens - I know the features of each - but specifically for YOU, what would you miss out on - given your statements about corrections in S/W and focus stacking (maybe HDR falls in the same area, but I don't recall you doing much with that as sensor dynamic range has increased) ...

I do miss my 4x5 field camera. There is absolutely something special about the craft of using a camera like this. But then again, I don't miss carrying it. I don't miss focussing it. I don't miss trying to keep it steady in the wind. I don't miss film and processing costs. Would a set of tilt-shift lenses on the GFX allow me to recapture some of that old sense of craft? Maybe. Then again, they're heavy. And expensive. And presumably difficult to focus. And no AF of course, so no automated focus stacking, which I use a lot with my 120mm macro. And no weather sealing. Times change. Technology moves on. Somehow I don't think it would be the same. But I look forward to hearing how you get on if you do get to try it.

I agree but a good tilt-shift lens is useful for landscape too. I have a Canon 17mm TSE lens that I can adapt to GF but it is too wide most of the time and not sharp enough for large prints when used with the 102MP sensor. I’m hoping the GF30mm lives up to Fuji’s claims. If I’m going to carry something that heavy in my bag, a 20mm equivalent lens would be a better choice for me but I’ll take what I can get for the quality!

I really have mixed feelings about this video. Like you, I came from decades with 4x5 (and still have the gear), but now I use both the Fuji GFX 100s and the Nikon Z8. I'm really interested in the 30mm T/S lens, but mainly for use in architectural type settings. I like having the gear to do different types of photography, but I tend to evaluate if the gear will work for me in the type of photography that I do. I'm more inspired when my gear matches my vision. I'll wait to see what the availability of the 30mm is and decide from there.

I mean, if I'd be stuck with my mobile phone, I can take pictures as well, and although I disagree, it has been argued that you can't see the difference on printed media, but it just doesn't inspire me or make me enthousiastic to go out and shoot (perhaps also because there's no effort shooting with a mobile phone), whereas lugging my big camerabag full of professional camera equipment along does make me want to take pictures and the results and increase in image quality really makes me enthousiastic.

Thanks for your views in this video. Back in film days I shot 4x5 field cameras. Today I use a Nikon D850 plus their 24mm PC-E (TS) lens for movements.
The new GFX 30mm TS lens is the exact focal length I would want to buy for the 33x44mm sensor. Sadly though (in this case), I shoot Hasselblads (over 51 years now). But since I'll never see a Hasselblad TS lens for my X2D-100C, I have decided, now in my older, retirement age, with a comfortable bit of disposable income, I am going to purchase the GFX 30mm TS lens when it becomes available, as well as a GFX 100s for a body to mount it on. Thanks for your response Adam.
You prefer to use the GFX100, due to the quality of the EVF, which is actually better.
I don't know if you used the accessory to rotate the EVF? It seems very useful to me, but I've never tried it, for difficult camera positions and when there's a lot of light; lots of sun. LCDs with sunlight work poorly.
The two batteries and also the robustness of the general construction are points in favor of the GFX100. The third small LCD on the back can also be useful; did you think that?
When you say that the GFX100 is heavier (and it is) you mean it has to be carried from place to place, in a backpack or even on a tripod, right? Because you always use a tripod, you don't have to hold it in your hands when taking photos.
    Thank you very much.

    • @QuietLightPhoto

The main reason I enjoy it over the 100s is the accessory . If I could justify the expense I would go for the new camera but at this point I can’t afford yet another GFX. I only use the EVF very rarely the screen on the back. The weight of the GFX 100 is the biggest issue for me, carrying it in the field is a burden

Tilt shift lenses aren't magically producing immense depth of field by tilting the plane of focus. There are tradeoffs. For example, the forest at 2:44 will not benefit from tilting the lens forward as the tops of the trees will move out of the cone of focus with the near forest floor in focus. Another example is flowers on the edge of the Grand Canyon -- tilting the lens forward to keep the flowers in focus and the far rim of the canyon in focus will leave the mid-range rocks on the bottom of the canyon out of focus. This effect is the same whether using a view camera or tilt-shift lenses on a digital camera.

    • @QuietLightPhoto
      @QuietLightPhoto  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

You're right, The examples you give are exceptions, but the benefits certainly outweigh the negatives. The forest scene that I used as an example is with a 4x5 and yes I did still have to stop down to f/45 but still maintained the vertical lines of the trees. With the smaller format and shorter focal length especially the 30mm it will be very easy to maintain depth with larger apertures.

I wish manufacturers would focus a bit more on lighter weight products that still give great image quality. It seems that when they lost customers to cell phones they went the other way and focused on the customers that want things the cell phones can't do (massive lenses, prime lenses, high frame rates, etc.) and everything got heavier, and those of us in the middle are getting left behind.
For me gear is just a tool, but for some reason I still get excited anytime I'm putting one of my Voigtlander lenses on the camera.

Today, manufacturers have an almost unmanageable challenge. If they make light, small, good lenses, the "gang of the 1.4" immediately screams, what am I supposed to do with lenses around aperture 5.6? I can use my smartphone for that. No matter what you do, there is always the other half of the customers who want exactly the opposite.…
But there are lenses for everyone. For example: There is the big heavy Sigma Art series, that exactly satisfies the open-aperture gang. And there are the more compact contemporary lenses for the lightweight lovers.

    • @pmc7105
      @pmc7105 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@SD_Alias There aren't too many for the lightweight lovers. The best I've seen so far are the 14-30 and 24-200 from Nikon, making a two lens kit possible, otherwise you're carrying a minimum of 3 lenses or worse, a bag full of primes. Canon has some nice light stuff but it's almost too light and cheap; but that's par for the course for them, market segmentation games (here's a lens that's way too much for what you need, and here's a cheaper one that isn't too great and isn't quite what you need). Point taken though that you can't make everyone happy, and it's up to the manufacturers to do what the market is demanding. But it's tiring that they always figuratively say "You want lightweight? Then you're not really serious about image quality. People that want good images want heavy big aperture lenses."

    • @SD_Alias
      @SD_Alias 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@pmc7105 I can only speak for my weight and image quality requirements. I am very happy with the Sigma Contemporary lenses and some Leica M lenses and Voigtländer lenses. The latter of course have no weather protection or AF, but that's exactly why they are very small and have excellent image quality.
And as far as camera bodies are concerned, I find many of them rather too small. Sony cameras in particular are not comfortable to carry for long periods of time with normal-sized men's hands. I prefer slightly larger housings. The most ergonomic camera for me ist the older GFX50S.
Of course, it's also a question of how old and how sporty someone is and whether every gram counts.
