Love your videos... They help keep me motivated, since I actually just started my own charter business up here in NJ. I run inshore trips for fluke, black seabass, striped bass, etc. I totally hear ya on the startup costs and long term vision. Wishing you guys the best of luck!!
My offshore days were basically in the 80s……we fished a lot….every weekend. If memory serves me correctly, a trip offshore was around 1,000. 4 guys at $300 a head included tip for mate. We caught tons of tuna, occasionally a billfish….always fun and appreciated the scenery. Off Va Beach one day, I could not distinguish sky from water. I saw so much life…..and of course, the obligatory cocktails on the way home. There were 4 of us, still best friends today. It truly is an amazing experience. You guys and your transparency are awesome, hope you continue to charter for a very long time. But I get it, it’s waaaaaay expensive-tight lines
This was a good informative video. It gives some insight into the costs to run a boat and a charter business. After fishing inshore, offshore, tournament fishing, diving, running boat up to @50’, working for boat owners and running their boats, fishing several countries over the last 45 years I can tell you almost every boat owner, charter business, groups that own a boat together, celebrity or family that owns boats are NOT making big or any profits or even breaking even running their boat or “charters”. They own a boat and fish because they love it. Every year even when fully booking trips (say @120+ per year) something comes up to eat into the money you make. The more hours ( mostly hard running hours) run up on the boat and gear the more you will have to spend for repairs and upkeep. A charter operation will be very fortunate to just break even after just adding up the expenses you are showing in the video. I understand you guys are trying to build a “brand” which takes years and decades to achieve. Selling gear and shirts and things like that will maybe help offset the costs associated with running the business but will NEVER be able to fully fund any type of charter business. Even selling 20,000 units of branded items you normally will only make 1-4 dollars per item which will help but not fully fund a charter business. Winning or placing in a big tournament may help the “brand name” get out to other anglers that fish these tournaments and the followers of fishing event. If you fish in these and do not place in any of the categories or catch an exceptional fish it is very hard to gain ground as a standout in the industry. I will say that there are exceptions to this like M Jordan who has a 15+ million boat and can set 2-7 million aside every year to “fish” and travel the world doing so or people like the Healy family which has the great fortune to build that brand into an international “brand”. Lots of celebs, sports figures and big business owners are very fortunate to just build the cost of a boat and fishing into their annual budgets. Bottom line suggestion for you guys would be to really consider for you guys is to widen your charter business to incorporate different trips that could end up being more profitable and way less wear and tear on your boat. I have fished a lot out of the area your located year round and can tell you that there is great fishing within 2-12 miles out of your inlet. Bottom fishing for many many species, trolling for Spanish, kings, cobia, blues and even stripers over the winter will be way less costs to run then 10-12 hour offshore trips. I do see you offer different trips on the boat but not many guys down there actually try to get a client following to do these type trips. 2 -6 hour trips inshore anchored up will cost about 1/2 what your spending on 1 tuna marlin day trip, even reducing hours on the boat from +10-12 hours to about 4-6 hours for 2 daily bottom trips. Getting a commercial bottom (ground) fishing license can also increase bottom line for the business. Winter bottom fishing down there is great if you find the structures that hold grouper, snappers, tiles, black sea bass and tons of other marketable species. Great market for these fish and can go on non chartered days bringing along a couple charter individuals or just some friends. Another great way for you guys to increase your marketability would be to team up with a college or “university” that does government or independent fisheries research that will give you good exposure and at least usually get paid for the trip. Tons of grants are awarded every year from the states, NMFS, IGF and coastal colleges and universities that offer marine and biology classes. I enjoy your videos and it is refreshing seeing some transparency in operating costs and reality check owning and operating a charter business. Tough business to be in last several years but hopefully you guys will be around a long time.
Greetings from south Fl. Love the channel. Im fortunate the gulfstream is so close and have no debt associated with my operation. It also helps that I can do most maintenance myself on my non fishing days. I also do trips to the sandbar which is low key and low stress and decent money. Thanks for putting out the vids I really enjoy the content! 💪
Think you forgot to include slip rent which is steep for a boat that size. My first though at the start of the video was, get a couple inshore guides onboard. I am just recreational fisherman, fish out of Wrightsville Beach area. I have fished with some inshore/nearshore guides here over the years. Good guides seem to stay booked 5-6 days a week, weather permitting.
Running charters out of anywhere along NJ is terrible. We are no less then 70 miles to the tip of the canyons and most cases much further. The last trip we did we ended up almost 120 miles offshore. Burned almost 350gallons on a 31ft boat. People aren't paying 3 grand to come home skunked. This year has been extra terrible with water and weather. We have had to go further then most years and the fish are just few and far between. Surprisingly the billfish bite has been pretty good but the tuna just haven't shown in consistent numbers anywhere.
All the captains who run charters in Montauk have full time "second" jobs or businesses. Also many fish commercial on "the side" have commercial tags, permits etc.

What about the initial boat investment and major repairs? Tackle/bait? Government fees? Long term financial goals (retirement)? Seems like you need a great deal of initial funds, cash on reserve (not to mention other sources of income) to start even thinking about this type of business venture.
Guys , you are speaking about North Carolina- that not a place. In Fl they make money like trouble, just small trips on the intra- coastal, plus fish like flies off shore!
Got a video of my dad and his buddy’s in the early 90’s went somewhere out of the obx on a boat that had duck in its name they caught 20-30 bluefin that day the caught so many the literally started hand feeding the bait to them and before the bait hits the water you can see 15-20 blue find break on it. The capt said he had been doing that for 59 years and never seen so many bluefin as he did that day. It’s a pretty cool video but it was shot in the early 90’s by men drinking all day on a day with some decent swells
I have often heard from more than a few captains and owners. The best way to make a million dollars in the yachting industry is to start with a billion.
It would be a great feature, but to tell you the truth, very few people ask about it. Also, the engine room in our boat is likely too small to sustain it.
Would you say having a business partner with deep pockets is the way to Start in this business? Is it even worth trying to get into this type of charter as a owner operator?
What a bunch of liars. Here in San Diego they are charging $10,000 per person for a 2 day trip. If they were losing money, they would stop the business.
And to the guy in blue shirt. The reason there’s not as much of a demand for it today is because the prices to charter about have become ridiculous and you know it.
