Started solely as an Automotive photographer, as it was my main passion. Branched out into Product, Portraits, Landscapes and Real Estate work. That grew into all of my clients asking if I also did video. After saying no over and over again, one day I decided to say, yes, I do do video. Fast forward 2 years later and video is about 75% of my workflow.
The key to success in this field is constant growth and learning new skills. The more branches your skill tree has, the more clients can land with you. That's not to say you should be putting subpar work out there, claiming you know what you're doing, but dip your toes in with some easier gigs and move from there.
My clients hire me because A, I do quality work. B, I'm a nice guy who is easy to work with. Many clients value B more than A, believe it or not.
Lastly, the format in which the photo is taken is completely irrelevant. Myself and most professional photographers can take a compelling shot on a Polaroid or a Hasselblad. The tool doesn't make the difference, the years and years of eye training and composition are really what people are hiring you for whether they realize it or not. Hone in on this skill and the rest will come pretty easily.

I tried for like 5 years to make photography a business as a family photographer. After barely making over expenses I quit. I would rather spend more time taking photos of my own family. Not to mention taking photos for others gave me major burn out. It killed my creativity and drive to take photos; and I am totally ok with that. I now love photography again.

I now only shoot for myself, after 6 years of shooting professional motocross/motorsport in the UK for teams and companies it changed from a passion to a job,I got so busy it took the enjoyment out of my passion so I quit in 2020.I now really enjoy photography again and stick to my day job with a few gigs here and there.

You nailed it. Not just photography, but all skills are reaching a point where the skill itself is not enough. You have to learn how the base skill works in conjunction with other skills (I.e. business, marketing, coding, etc). If you don’t have an understanding of this, then you’re going to reach your personal and professional growth cap pretty quickly.

This is a very interesting topic especially in my niche which is automotive photography. A lot of young kids are doing it for free and getting in amongst nice cars is enough for them but for my self and some of my friends that want to do it full time and leave our current jobs it just doesn’t pay the bills 😂 that’s the real struggle I find that people are happy with subpar work because it free rather than top quality work because they have to pay for it!

Being TH-camr, Instagramer and vloger is not the only thing that can be done with a camera. The problem with the arts (in general) is that it takes time. It takes time to make a brand name, it takes time to get to the right contacts, it takes time to develop style and technique.
You are right, we are not in those times when a photographer was called upon to do almost everything. But still on the street there are hundreds of billboards with photos of models promoting a product, prints are still sold, portfolios are still requested from agency models and those are not made by recording a video.
The bestial marketing through this medium (TH-cam) that encourages purchase and abundance are what make people think “You can do it too, buy my new camera”. But the reality is that even in the past it was also difficult for most photographers, being good takes effort and time. How can we make a living from this business if the majority are of those who do this, are bad and work for crumbs? None of the big name photographers who have large clients are on TH-cam or Instagram posting the breakfast of the day.
Excellent video anyway, it is thought-provoking and the ideas you offer are definitely workable. And don't take me the wrong way please, I know it looks like a rant.

For me get good and dedicated to the art for that simple reason, if monetary reward follows then great but focus on the art rather than the money.

I agree. If you are a great photographer when are you posting video of you making a dang pour over coffee all the time?
You should be out shooting and grabbing a crappy gas station coffee on your way to the gig. It takes hustle to keep those jobs booked. Not long slow pour over coffee vids.

The best way to enter a highly competitive industry is through an established mentor. Yes, if you're charismatic, you might be able to make it on social media. But if you want to work in an industry, go work for someone who has a name and is established in that industry. Work hard and do everything you're told for a couple of years. You'll gain more experience and connections than a lifetime on social media.

You are right, so many people get their success first by working for free (volunteer). Thanks for such great videos. I just got my first paid job marketing a farm using photos I took and just did free prom photos for a group of 8 -one of my students asked me - I'm so glad they did. 5 families got pictures and saw my work. I taught three classes of beginner photography to a group of homeschool teens ( unpaid work, but I learned so much myself) it was a good experience overall. Getting the ball rolling...hobby->sidehustle->job someday. Thanks for encouraging us.

I have been doing photography and video for almost 30 years, I’m 47 now. The markets have definitely changed. Back in the day it was about as difficult as it is today for professional videographers and and photographers. Everything was word of mouth, equipment was usually heavier and more expensive. Yes, it’s competitive today, but easier to get out there and market through social media.
Back in the day, there were limited outlets for video media which was primarily TV, today there is You Tube. Today, more competition due to easier access to technology has changed the field. It’s all about investing time, dedication and producing a quality product for the end user.

Little do they know that the immaterial vallue she gets is worth more then the quick cash grab. She can now sign those projects off and people will notice that, which mean with time she can build a great portfolio, get her name out there and increase her own "market value" in a more sustainable way. Good things take time and effort.

hm I think it depends on the genre/application/budget. besides small stuff you cannot do both. Filming need a complete different setup / team as a photo production. I could not image any Advertising job I did that there was a way to do film. If Film is needed there is a second unit doing this ... but then it would be totally cluttered. I mean I had people in the team doing film for social media. doing the typical making of and vlog stuff. When you have to deliver film or photos on a certain level it is impossible. for small budget jobs maybe. but I would never want to have the stress and would never take a job doing both.

Lesson number two: listen to what they say and you will learn years of experience.
Lesson number three: copy what they do, not really copy them but apply their techniques and add them to your knowledge. And no matter what happen follow your dreams, coz in my opinion i’d rather follow my dreams and failed, than not following my dreams and knowing you maybe successful one day.

I hate everything about this. It isn't true that in this day you have to play ball to make it big but it is the easier path. Photography isn't about taking great photos anymore it's about being a salesman and pushing yourself as a product. He exactly said it: "this person has 10K followers he must know what he's doing." But fake internet points are just that. Fake.
I'm not saying I'm a great or even good photographer. I've done a lot of brand work for large clients and photography is a major passion... But I would rather never pick up a camera again then think like this. I've been a salesman for a major company and it sucks. All sales and marketing is just tricking people into buying something, you're deceiving people into throwing money at you. "Hustling" by definition is a deceptive act. And being "on that grind" or "gotta hustle" is so stupid. This North American photographer mindset is just so harmful on photography.
You don't have to "Play the game" or do video to be a successful photographer. This mindset stops so many people from going after their art and it is entirely Bull.

@@martinpickard5818 Not naming anyone but I see one in the comment section who is a "professional photographer" but if you look at his work hes really just an amazing business marketer. "Professional Photography" isn't just about the art its about the business side too.
What my point is, just produce better results at a lower price than this "professional" and you should be able to get your piece of the pie too.

Professional video is no longer needed.. I may be wrong.. BUT. I think you are wrong. First, I did not make it to the end of your video because it was long and boring and as soon as an ad pops up I either skip it or I go to another website or video so I may not have gotten the full gist of your video. Your click bait title hooked me in pretty good though, or at least long enough to watch your first few mins before the ad popped up. I personally think that we are inundated with video and youtube. Your video for example is so long, I could not hang with it. People want snippits, soundbites, photos with a story. They are sick of ads. For information, I don't want to watch video news, I don't want video reviews. I want a picture and a few words in an article.. Fast and easy to digest. Time is money and valuable. Video wastes too much time. I like being able to do a search on key words and jump to the center of an article with a picture that shows me what I need to know, not waste time waiting for a video to spool up and having to jump to a time frame. (Videos with indexes are better but still take a long time. I remember when the VHS cam recorder came out and people said photographs were dead yet they are still here. Photographs can tell a story instantly. You make a case that because of phones, professional photography is no longer needed. But the same phones are starting to do 4k video so by your logic, professional video is no longer needed. While I agree times are changing. There are no longer a large number of VCR repairmen, laser disk, cd, or dvd rental shops. Those people are doing something else. But people still want images of their children, schools still take pictures of students whether it is for a website or a book. Event and Wedding photography are still going gangbusters and there are people who still make good money doing it. People still buy images of their kids at an event, sports event. Participants in races still buy images, printed or digital. I don't think this is going away anytime soon. It may not survive exactly how it is now. Maybe robots or some type of automation may take over professional photography. As for professional videographers. They are going away. What happens when TH-cam stops monetizing videos. All the "professionals" will leave and only people with cell phones will be making videos. Anyone with a cell phone will be able to make a video, it requires no skill, anyone can do it. People won't pay for professional videography, and if the video is not good, they are not going to watch your video. I personally think that photographers and videographers.. like yourself will go away because they are not skilled or any good at what they do. People who are true professionals will continue to make money. I bet Joel Grimes and Jerry Ghoinis who are true professionals doing good ole standard people photography, event, portrait, wedding are making a lot more money than you are and they will still be here long after your youtube channel is gone when TH-cam eliminates or reduces funding to the point you can't make any money doing it. Nothing personal, I just don't think you know what you are talking about. Just because you may not have been able to make it in photography doesn't mean others can't.

Ai will kill most product, fashion and fine art photography within 12 months. The degradation of peoples visual literacy means that no one needs or cares for professional photography now. People prefer photos made by the iPhone aesthetic rather than the orange-faced over processed junk that 90% of photographers produce.
Print photography and books are still worthwhile.
