  • A few years back, Elon Musk participated in a couple of interviews where he offers some choice words about MBA degree holders. As an MBA graduate myself, but also a huge Elon Musk fan, I wanted to share my reaction to what he said that might be surprising.

Engineer pursuing an MBA here. Agree to an extent - engineers are incredible problem solvers and have an aptitude for quickly learning new topics. That being said, we are not taught corporate finance concepts in an engineering curriculum. An MBA is a tool to network, expand an engineer’s perspective, and be able to quantify value.
Though…I do find it disturbing the number of my cohorts and alumni in finance functions who have a fundamental lack of understanding for more technical products.

Manufacturing companies like Tesla need MBA'S but the program should be geared towards manufacturing since business is quite general and broad. So you need a specialized MBA

People mistake common sense with common knowledge. Reinvestment doesn't need rocket science logic to understand but human nature without being educated will tend to splurge all earnings.

Well said. The value chain and understanding the company’s actually business they compete in is what MBAs do really well. There is a gross over misrepresentation that MBAs are these corporate types who look at Finance, income statements, balance sheets and ratios. There is a lot of that sort of atrophy of management style today because most corporate executives of really large multinational corporations are these people who are in their 50s and late 60s who have a very outdated way of running companies. Modern MBAs are very good at dissecting what set of activities and strategic decision making logic firms make that give a unique and sustained competitive advantage. That is the sort of skill sets that really good MBAs are worth their weight in gold in when they can use that to their advantage or set a strategic decision analysis to compete effectively by first understanding what key activities their competitors do very well in order to then engineer an approach to their own businesses that will allow to either gain greater market share or charge a higher rate of return from their competitors, or both! I am a Elon fan as well. I will say this, if there are anyone who will dethrone any Elon type companies like Tesla or SpaceX when they space industry really takes off, it will be a bunch of MBAs who will take significant market share and profitability.
