This video will help you to learn What is Duma’s Method ?
What is Duma’s Method?
Duma's method for nitrogen determination was developed by Jean-Baptiste Duma during his studies in 1831, even before the Kjeldahl analysis.
In Duma’s method of nitrogen estimation, A known mass of the nitrogen-containing organic compound is heated with cupric oxide in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide.
The carbon and hydrogen in the compound are oxidized to carbon dioxide and water respectively, while nitrogen is set free.
Any oxide of nitrogen produced during this process is reduced back to free nitrogen by a heated copper gauze.
The gaseous mixture consisting of CO2, H2O, and N2 is collected over an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide.
All the gases except nitrogen are absorbed by the solution.
The volume of nitrogen gas collected is measured.
From the volume of nitrogen obtained the percentage of nitrogen in the compound is calculated.
Let’s say in an experiment, the mass of organic compound taken is equal to W grams
The volume of nitrogen gas collected is equal to V centimeter cube
Atmospheric pressure is equal to P mm of Hg
Room temperature is equal to T Kelvin
The pressure of water vapor at T Kelvin that is aqueous tension is equal to small p mm of Hg
Thus, the pressure of dry nitrogen is equal to P minus p mm of Hg
The first step in the estimation process is to calculate the volume of nitrogen gas at STP
At experimental conditions
Volume V1 is equal to measured volume v centimeter cube
Pressure P1 is equal to atmospheric pressure P minus aqueous tension p mm of HG
Temperature T1 is equal to Room temperature T kelvin
At STP
Volume V2 is to be calculated
Pressure P2 is equal to 760 mm of HG
Temperature T2 is equal to 273 Kelvin
Using the relation P1V1 by T1 equal to P2V2 by T2, we have
Volume V2 equal to P minus small P into V into 273 divided by 760 into T
Now, we know that at STP, the weight of a 22400-centimetre cube of Nitrogen gas is 28 grams
Therefore the weight of V2 centimeter cube of Nitrogen gas at STP is 28 divided by 22400 into V2 grams
Amount of nitrogen present in W grams of organic compound is equal to 28 divided by 22400 into V2 into W
Now, the Percentage of nitrogen is equal to 28 by 22400 into V2 into W divided by the weight of organic compound into 100.

I understand every concept about Dumas method thanks
I think this is a best way to understand the duma concept ...really good
😂
Wow, simply awesome for understanding concepts.
Thanks for the explanation, it made Duma's method more clear.
While writing formula in explanation you used V2 x W but no need of W overthere
Crystal clear explanation
thank you, very clear explanation
That is the best i have seen. Can you make for kjeldahl method too.
Nice video... good explanation with animation
Thanks for appreciation, please like and share our videos to support us
@@Extraclass sure sir
Sir pl upload video on Kjeldahl Method as well
Useful video thank you. But I guess that the derivation is a little wrong according to ncert. Please correct it
Excellent video and animation
Thanks
Awesome 👌
Can i have explanation on kjeldahl's method🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏, I have understood everything.
Me too
Hello
Excellent sir
Thanks
Excellent Explanation fully understood
SUPER EXPLAINATION &
I ALSO DONE LIKE, COMMENT & SHARE
Thank you very much
This was really helpful
Pure copper is missing in the combustion chamber (left side).
Thank you
Thank you.💜
It's quite similar to what given in the NCERT
Thankyou so much for your video 🌸
Helpful ☺️❤️
Nice thanks 💞
Excellent👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
In which chapter of 11th there is Dumas method topic..?
Organic chemistry
Excellent ❤️
you should lower background music
Sure we will
Sema
music is too loud
0:12 His last name was Dumas, not Duma.
Thanks for catching the type, we will update
Hate that music
Rest is good.
