ATSF F7 1956 Leslie S5T

  • This Leslie Bronze Power Chamber S5T was installed to an unknown F7 in 1957 at the ATSF San Bernardino Shops. All passenger service Fs based out of SBD received 5 Chime Leslie S5Ts to replace Leslie A200 or Wabco E2 Horns. The Leslie 5 chime was found to be a more pleasing sound than the early 50s single note honkers.
    In the early days of Leslie production, power chambers were cast out of bronze as can be seen on this horn. I chose to leave them unpainted to show off the beautiful bronze shine on this horn. You may also notice the welded #31 bell. Early Leslie 25 and 31 bells were cast in 2 pieces and welded together. The welded 25 disappeared in 1956 while the 31 continued another year or so, showing up into 1957-1958.
    Enjoy the sounds of the ATSF's glory days!

      Annie Bauer Maw must have heard it back in 1954-55 when she still lived in Tularosa, New Mexico

    This is also the horn of the U-50 apparently, which is strange since there is not much footage of the U-50 online since it was scrapped.

    Great recording. These horns are nothing without something good to echo off of - buildings, a grain elevator, mountains, whatever. Thanks for posting.

    Imagine if you were walking accross a long train bridge in the 50s at night and you hear this horn echoing and suddenly a light speeding at you while still on the bridge. What would you do?

    A sound like this is a trip back in time to the mid fifties where you could be standing at a grade crossing where you and a bunch of classic cars are waiting for the “Super Chief” or the “El Capitan” to haul a consist of about four or five EMD F7 Warbonnets across the way, along with a set of about 16 stainless steels bringing up the rear. Atop of some of the rearward stainless steels are vista domes, maybe even one on the last car-the observation car-the one with a curved end and an exit door.
    I was aboard one such locomotive once at a train museum. I wonder if it’s horn sounded like this one.

    Very eerie and haunting sound. I'm sure this horn probably scared the daylights out of some people back in the fifties. Thanks for sharing.

      It was probably weird going from steam whistles to this. Probably would've sounded otherworldly at the time.

    My dad grew up a block from a Wabash/N&W line in the '60s and '70s, so he probably heard something similar to this as a kid.

      According to the website of Leslie Controls, they still catalog train horns. I suppose short lines are their biggest customers now that Nathan has officially taken over class 1s. I personally haven't heard a Leslie horn in more than 2 years, seems like an eternity. I really miss the Leslie song... what it must have been like to grow up on the N&W and C&O back in the day...

    What’s the Difference between a RS5T and a S5T, they sound the same

    • @AirchimeLTDproductions174
      @AirchimeLTDproductions174 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The S5T uses S round back chambers while the RS5T uses spiked RS chambers. The difference in sound is that the S5T is much more mellow, smooth and musical. While the RS5T is much much harsher and it has a distinctive squeal before it sounds. Despite the differences both have synonymous tuning.

      Absolutely Leslie. Nathan has a few good horns, like the K5H, the K5HLA, the M5, and the K5LA, but Leslie's horns sound so much more beautiful and demanding. Especially the RS5T.
