  • From a 1989 episode of THE ARSENIO HALL SHOW here is an interview with Anthony Perkins. Anthony is promoting one of his worst films ever, EDGE OF SANITY. The title reflects the state of mind you need to be in to actually find entertainment value in the film. Anthony also discusses how he started his career and the classic PSYCHO a little bit.
Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to this video, nor do I own the rights to the film clip. I am merely sharing a rare TV interview with fans like myself.

Some people might think he was a bit pretentious the way he speaks about acting but, really, he just seems sincere, humble, showing a great amount of love and respect of his profession (which perhaps wasn’t very kind to him) and a genuinely nice man. Frank Langella speaks beautifully of him. Born in the 90s, I just wonder where I’m supposed to look amongst the film stars of my generation to find genuine modesty in an actor equal to Mr Perkin’s talent. Not anyone sitting on James Cordon’s sofa, I know that much. The people of my generation come over far too often as an incredibly selfish bunch.

Easy for us to pick that out and see his mistakes, but you got to remember the intense prep Arsenio had to do each episode. Arsenio had to read different books and watch movies nightly just to prepare for the guests on that nights show. On top of that he had to prepare the shows monologue, work with the writer, director, etc. No easy task by any means so keeping that in mind, you’re more apt to understand why he missed a detail or two.

I actually don't think Perkins would have liked someone else playing Norman. He was totally set on not doing Psycho II until he found out the studio was thinking of replacing him with Christopher Walken. Then he jumped up and played Bates for another three movies. He was understandably possessive over such an iconic role.

  • @screengazing6354

Arsenio is very polite and respectful here, but he should have been better informed. "I can't see you in a comedy," he tells Tony....but Tony, as he says, started in acting by doing comedic roles...for example, his first role was in the light comedy "The Actress," and then he starred in "The Matchmaker," which was absolutely a romantic comedy. I just wish Arsenio had the correct information before doing the interview...it's just an example of the ridiculous typecasting that followed Tony since "Psycho." He had a successful career before that movie...he starred in westerns, as a romantic leading man, etc.
