My name's Skip Simpson, and I portrayed the part of "The Old Man" in this video. It was a totally enjoyable experience, and I look forward to working with this creative team again. :)
This really reminds me of the quote by C. S. Lewis "If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world." Another beautiful unconventional anthem. Cheers John Mark.
JMM on this song: “Wilderlove [pronounced “Will-der-love”] is a word I made up. It’s kind of like ‘wanderlust’ but less selfish, and sort of compares people-scapes to landscapes. I think the desire in us to know and be known is so great that it speaks to what I believe is the transcendent part of a person. It’s the part of you that tells you you’re more than the sum of your experience. It’s the nagging suspicion that you might be part of something bigger. We all want to love big and broad without moderation, but few of us believe we ever do. That can create conflict in our daily smallness and settling, and I don’t think it’s something we can easily get away from. I think we all wrestle with it.”
I think it's coming to grips with just how unconditionally the Father & Jesus loves us, to be able to just rest in that! For their remains a rest for Gods people. 🔥❤🎶 WOW! The unspeakable gift and Uncomprenceable love, wisdom of Abba! Sometimes we wrestle with that because were still in our flesh but we walk in the Spirit.
Thank you for this! I’ve wondered for years now whether the wilderlove that he sings about is a love of the wilds as in chaos, or wilds as in the greater nature. Something about this song resonated with me, but I didn’t know if the ‘wilderlove’ was something I should revel in or oppose. That quote from JMM makes so much more sense now - when we go to the wilds, we feel that we are a part of this larger ‘scape’, yet we are this smallness. How do we reconcile the conflict between the reality we sense within and around us, and the reality of our personal routine? How do we fit in all of this? The wilderlove deals with that.
About time a christian artist let's his/her freak flag fly, and isn't scared to get a little weird. I love everything about this song and video. Masterfully done.
I heard this song years ago and now coming back to it, I finally understood its meaning, this song represents the Lord as in wilderness, it vast expanse and omnipotence, in each ourselves exists a "wild heart" that belongs to this wilderness but we live in a domesticated world, thus we reckon with it as the nature and the world we are living in are conflicted.
Brilliant. Thank God for John Mark McMillan. The church used to be the place for the greatest music and art, (Michelangelo, Mozart, Bach, etc.) and now it's a sad imitation of the world, from a decade ago. Now, we are on the up and up towards true beauty again. Soli Deo Gloria
John is talking about the two men we struggle with , after new birth. Paul described it in Romans 7, saying "who can deliver me ?". Thank God, through Jesus Christ, we can bring an end to the man of sin...
That's what I want this song to be about, and lyrically I could see that, even visually in the music video. But when I read JMM's explanation of wilderlove (posted above) I am just further confused...
The Spirit of God touches deep recesses in my soul through this masterpiece. Truly a longing and aching for home and what we will be when we finally see the one who ransomed & redeemed our souls from death & the grave. 🔥JESUS👑CHRIST🔥 Hallelujah to His holy name forever & ever without end. AMEN
I love when I can enjoy religious artists despite being nonreligious myself. This is a beautiful piece of music and he has an incredibly powerful voice! I absolutely love this track and plan on keeping an eye on this music ❤
Hi :-) Just wanted to say that this song just played at a Starbucks in San Diego CA. For reference, I was sitting here listening to all the good indie music they play and looked up another song that was literally mocking God and Eden etc. So I was so surprised and encouraged to hear a familiar Christian song from the “indie” sector, or whatever you would call it. Appropriately it sounds great with all the other songs, sneaking Jesus in there with all the other nasty stuff. Keep making alternative Christian music. It really does cause HUGE waves of change, not just in Christian’s lives, but in every body’s.
People can draw religious connections but I feel that the wilderness represents the heart of humanity and how we are at constant odds with ourselves in our day to day life.
The idea of who John the baptist is came out of this song for me. The realness of his dedication to point to Christ and the mysterious way that ALL the people in that city were repenting. That the love of Christ the Messiah was being revealed to all who believed. We all wrestle with giving our life to Jesis for his purpose, but once we do the conflict of guilt and condemnation finally go away and we can enjoy the Messiah and the purposes he was sent for. It says clearly that Jesus was sent to take away the sins of the world. Thank you John Maek for letting my imagination run wild. I keep listening to this song because there is something about a hidden meaning that we desire and seek after.
We long to love intensely. We are always looking for someone worthy to love this way, our heart longs to love. Jesus Christ is worthy to love like this. Here's how I found Jesus for myself! I was looking for a man to admire and I found Jesus! As I admired Jesus and got to know Him personally I began to Adore HIM! Once I began to adore Him I opened the door of my heart to Jesus and HE came in. Now we Abide together forever more. It's a 3 step process. 1. ADMIRE 2. ADORE 3. ABIDE as the Bride of Christ! We are one! I Love your deep voice in this song John Mark it's sounds great! Love your music John Mark! Keep bringing it! God Bless you in all you do and say to bring Glory to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lord's Christ Jesus the very son of God that saved us all!
Such a great dialetic experience... from the dust of the deepest life in order to reach the beauty (that beauty alocated from knowledge of our limitness, our fragility, our nature). Cheers to John, cheers. You are a great artist.
This video was very different, but Im so excited for more! Yet another video of yours to enjoy analyzing and formulating a possible explanation of what you were trying to portray and the symbolism behind everything in the video. Thank you John!!!
I can't get enough of this song/video. Awesome to see an artist that is a Christian make interesting/thought provoking/beautiful art. I love the idea of the message of this song too. Ah man...thank you Jesus for John Mark McMilan!
Yay John Mark!!! God continue to bless you and your ministry! I believe God is using your music ministry to reach people who otherwise may not be reached with the more common, straight-forward Christian music. Love the metaphors! Love the style! Love the cinematography. As Tiffany said below, it is quite refreshing! Glory to God!
Wilderlove A love without reservation or premonition. An innocent, childlike love. A love that's wild and almost instinctual. The impulse to help the stranger could only be attributed to the wilderlove within me.
Plumbed the badlands as a child Where the dust devils dance On the dreams of the ivy wild The places you grow up The tumbling ground is rough There is no domestic heart So what have we become Just pedestrian There is no domestic heart And the wilderlove is hidden within us And we reckon with it And we wrestle with it The wilderlove is hidden within us And we wrestle with it We wrestle with it You are the wilderness And I fall fast drawn To the rise of your vast expanse And I feel so underdressed So civilized and small By the powers that you possess The places you grow up The tumbling ground is rough There is no domestic heart So what have we become Just pedestrian There is no domestic heart And the wilderlove is hidden within us And we wrestle with it And we wrestle with it The wilderlove is hidden within us And we wrestle with it And we wrestle with it Plumbed the badlands as a child Where the dust devils dance On the dreams of the ivy wild And the wilderlove is hidden within us And we wrestle with it And we wrestle with it The wilderlove is hidden within us And we wrestle with it And we wrestle with it

Skip I am sure the great work will always be available as long as truth prevails
You did great! Good job!
Good job, Skip! You've got moves!
Great to see something new and challenging :)
Great work!

Never expected to find you here!
Thank God for musicians/artists/prophets who don't play it safe.
You are so right on. Amen.

Huh. I was hoping this was a song about the desire to spend time in the wilderness, like a ballad of respect for the natural world. Ah well.
It's what I thought at the beginning too ahah
M-K-L your 1st impression is most likely correct

John restored my faith in Christian songwriters
you should look up some lyrics from the band Tourniquet. They are a christian metal band. and have some really good lyrics
Beautiful Eulogy is a rap/ spoken word group that has really deep theological truth imbedded in every song. I highly recommend them.
About time a christian artist let's his/her freak flag fly, and isn't scared to get a little weird. I love everything about this song and video. Masterfully done.
There are some artist out there who are not afraid to get a little weird too :) let me know if you want me to link some :)
Definitely link some
Tyler Joseph is a big one.
Sad when making overproduced songs with vague confusing lyrics is celebrated. It was poorly done all around sadly.
This is the Twin Peaks of Christian music.

This song / video deserves at least a million plays. This was the first exclusively vertical music video I saw released.

I am SO grateful that you aren't afraid to produce music that is more about truth than mainstream fluff and filler. Thank you.
What? It is overproduced and all it is is filler and fluff.
@@NoNonsense77 Just curious, what do you mean? Can you elaborate?

Lord bless this fella. This is wonderful. So refreshing in the Christian world of fluff and superficiality. Love love love this.
I've been listening to John Mark McMillan pretty much non-stop for a year. So much truth and beauty hits my heart with a wallop every time.
Fotografia, Formato, Música... tudo bonito demais!
This is my favorite song by him, what a great video to complete this experience that is "Wilderlove"!
A fine songwriter. One of the best songs I've heard in many, many years...

People can draw religious connections but I feel that the wilderness represents the heart of humanity and how we are at constant odds with ourselves in our day to day life.
I was begining to give up looking for another original gifted artist after Josh Garrels. Love John Mark's originality and a voice like buttah!
This track is absolute gold! What an exceptionally well done song, straight fire!

GREAT JOB
great song
Plumbed the badlands as a child
Where the dust devils dance
On the dreams of the ivy wild
The places you grow up
The tumbling ground is rough
There is no domestic heart
So what have we become
Just pedestrian
There is no domestic heart
And the wilderlove is hidden within us
And we reckon with it
And we wrestle with it
The wilderlove is hidden within us
And we wrestle with it
We wrestle with it
You are the wilderness
And I fall fast drawn
To the rise of your vast expanse
And I feel so underdressed
So civilized and small
By the powers that you possess
The places you grow up
The tumbling ground is rough
There is no domestic heart
So what have we become
Just pedestrian
There is no domestic heart
And the wilderlove is hidden within us
And we wrestle with it
And we wrestle with it
The wilderlove is hidden within us
And we wrestle with it
And we wrestle with it
Plumbed the badlands as a child
Where the dust devils dance
On the dreams of the ivy wild
And the wilderlove is hidden within us
And we wrestle with it
And we wrestle with it
The wilderlove is hidden within us
And we wrestle with it
And we wrestle with it
Powerful!
