Sad song but once I realized I had no place in america I got out and now I have a country I can call my home. Well sort of. Not a citizen but I like it here.
I remember walking down the streets of Berlin listening to this on my headphones and laughing. I had sold everything I owned and moved to Germany but subsequently overstayed my tourist visa while waiting to interview for my visa. I was an illegal alien in a foreign country. I had nothing to go back to and nowhere to go. It was awesome. I was free--just me and Jesus. For the first time, this song made sense...
John Mark, I don't know if you read the comments or not but I want to write this to you. I just listened to this song for the first time today and I looped it and have been listening to it for at least an hour and a half. I want to thank you for reminder that while our country affairs effect us and the world we don't call this place our home, it's not our country. My favorite is, "When the bomb went off, we were dancing in the kitchen with a neon cross" In the midst of fear, anger, and sadness, The Cross brings light and joy. I'm looking forward to March.
You always hit the exposed nerves of my heart. When other believers just don't understand me, I find a kinship with your lyrics. Reminds me that I'm not alone. Thank you for your deep words that unsettle the dry believers.
This is a powerful song with a vision .All the words turn to be prophetic .I do not recognize my homeland country as well as my adoptive country..Thus I have no place and space to call my country .I just raise my heart and mind and thanks God to accept my citizenship
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of all of my beautiful refugee friends I met working in camps, and the gratitude they have despite all that they've gone through, even having no country to call their own. God bless Syria and Iraq! ❤️
Looking at this 3 years after you. I feel the same. In the Stabal Session Live, he commented about the song (I think) and said it was written in mind with the refugees attempting to come in through the southern borders and how heartbroken he was seeing the images of the man and his baby having drowned in trying to cross. How life could be so fragile in their home countries that they would leave to find a better place knowing that there may not be such a place. Loose life at home or possibly gain life by seeking refuge elsewhere... I know immigration reform is so tempestuous, but I believe we need to remember the heart of the Gospel and not the heart of politics and figure out a way to care for these people by whatever means either in the US or abroad.
Beautiful song with powerful words. Lots of happening nowadays.True we do not recognize lots of countries on earth, all belong to the earth and their leaders speak as they are from earth and will be there permanently. They forget the one who comes form above is above all.The one who comes from heaven ,our country is above all .
Yes, this video does really capture a complicated mood very effectively. Love verse 2! "I know that I'm wrong, but you don't know your blind. Do you see me? Do you see me at night?"
Hey John. Not sure if you will ever see this comment but i feel so related since many of us Hong Kongers will have to fleed our home soon to Canada or the UK...this song hits home
watch the song in the Stabal Sessions and you'll see him explain something very similar to what you've said here. God bless all of you. You have not been alone. Many prayers continue to be lifted. Peace
I heard this song for the first time when you and Josh Garrels came to Milwaukee on the Revelators tour! It is definitely an anointed song and it really touched me! It was a pleasure to meet you and hopefully our paths will cross again. God bless you!
Saw him last Thursday along with Josh Garrels. Both men are extremely passionate about refugees whose lives have been ripped apart by war and disaster. It is truly sad that our government is so reluctant to help these people.
It's super sad. They don't need much but people are still resistant to help. I think we dehumanize them, it's easier that way. Here's the political part: many of the refugees are displaced because of us. We at least owe them entry.
"I know everyone of us are hypocrites But still I never thought that it would come to this No place to love, no place to exist I got no place to raise my kids All of my reserves are compromised">>>>FOOD FOR THOUGHT
I think cus k-love plays music for christians. J. Mark is a christian who makes music. K-love seems to appeal solely to emotions. Little different from the Psalms. Just a theory.
Not sure I’m understanding this song correctly... Is he referring to living in a really broken world and a believers real home in heaven? Or the whole immigration thing that’s is going on? Can someone break it down for me. Would really appreciate it.
On the lightning sessions album there's a track called "No Country // Dancing in the Kitchen..." where McMillan explains more of the story behind the song - it's inspired by a radio story of a restuarant owner that ended up assisting both sides of a conflict, and neither country would accept him and his family. The song is about questioning what a country actually is, and acknowledging that human's created countries.
p.s. also, check out the lightning sessions version of No Country, which is more focused on refugees (it's really good!) th-cam.com/video/Po3ZgofRpNE/w-d-xo.html
Loosely. It speaks of the refugee crisis. I saw him last Thursday and he made sure to clarify that it was not a political song because he hates politics
This song just shows how sad it is when a Christian forsakes what Jesus says for the acclaim of man. We have a country as Christians. It is heaven. Instead here JMM just is being political and instead sings about hopelessness where he could have started there and told us there is hope in heaven.

Amen Matt. Love your reminder to look to the Cross for our hope and peace, light and joy.

So relevant even now.

And I love the falsetto when you sing. "I feel the tremors of rumors of WAR." It's sick!

Corbin Fawley oh no no no! YOUR sick!
Actually, It's healthy XD
Yes, this video does really capture a complicated mood very effectively. Love verse 2!
"I know that I'm wrong, but you don't know your blind. Do you see me? Do you see me at night?"
This song feels even more appropriate at the end of 2020

Saw him last Thursday along with Josh Garrels. Both men are extremely passionate about refugees whose lives have been ripped apart by war and disaster. It is truly sad that our government is so reluctant to help these people.
You're being facetious, right?
It's super sad. They don't need much but people are still resistant to help. I think we dehumanize them, it's easier that way. Here's the political part: many of the refugees are displaced because of us. We at least owe them entry.
Also, him AND Garrels? Wish I knew about that tour

Who could ever know that this somg would be relateable for people of Ukraine, Russia, Israel and so on. To those where wars are raging like seas.
