Shooting Macro with the Olympus 60mm f/2.8

- In this video I test out the Olympus 60mm 2.8 macro lens. While a lot of photography can be very location specific, requiring new and unique locations, macro photography lets you shoot distinct photos in your own backyard or kitchen. In this video, I do some macro work in a typical backyard with some common subjects and basic gear suggestions.

I even just use it on auto with the non 1-1 macro setting and get fantastic results !

Fun fact about bees. As a warning that you’re getting too close to their territory they’ll start to bump into you. And if you eventually don’t get the picture they’ll sting you.
i do lots of bee pics. if you hold your breth, thay prity much ignore you. honist, ive never been stung!
@@timgrocutt have any other tips. I love photographing bees, but I just now bought the 60mm macro a few days ago.
@@DominiKing32 I don't have the 60mm. It looks good though. I like using a 25mm with a 10mm tube. You can really isolate the subject and it's fast. Don't be scared do forget the lens hood. It just blocks light. And pack a white t-shirt and towel. They can come in handy. That's my best tips. Hope it helps.

For that sensor, anything above ISO 800 will have noticeable noise or loss in detail.
You could've used the onboard flash as fill light since the natural light is clearly not enough.
You are right, I could have done some fill flash to keep iso down, but that was the point of the end of the video where I use the flash in more of a fill scenario.
I puposely wanted to start with no extra equipment and work my way into accessories. Ultimately, I think the best approach may have been a fill flash combined with ambient light as you suggest.
As for ISO, yes, if I was doing a huge print, I'd probably want to keep it below 800, but for most other uses, anything up to around 2000 would be fine in my opinion. The grain doesn't get too objectionable as you can see by my samples at ISO 2000.

Hi I’m getting into macro photography and have just bought the STF8 Olympus macro flash for my EM1 mk III and have started to try ‘focus bracketing’ which you can do in camera. but I usually try to film in natural light especially in Spring while the sun still sets early enough to film at “golden hour.” were you get some great colours and shadows at this time of the day. but as you know you need a lot of light for macro generally so I decided I needed to invest in a flash unit . do you use bracketing and staking if so do you have any tips you can share cheers.
I have used the bracketing/ stacking features. I'd say my main tip would be to use a tripod. It will make it a lot easier on the camera to keep everything as steady as possible. A remote to release the shutter would be a good idea too.
Hi josh i liked your review on the 60mm macro f2.8 olympus lens on olympus omd em5 mark ii but have to compared it with olympus 30mm macro f3.5 on olympus omd em5 mark 2 and am interested in such indepth comparison. Waiting for your suggestions.
I haven't compared the two, or shot with the 30mm for that matter. From a focal length perspective I like the 60mm because its a 120mm full frame equivalent and it lets you get closer to subjects without having to be in danger with things like bees or block the light source.

What is the 35mm magnification equivalent of this lens? I heard that it's 2:1. Is that true?

It's a tiltall travel tripod but looking for it recently I don't think it's made anymore. Manfrotto, benro, and mefoto all make similar models now.
Can I get a good portrait with the lens?
Sure, it's a pretty decent portrait length and at f2.8 it would be pretty good at the task too.
