When lending out or borrowing vehicles the rule is always the same - YOU BIN IN YOU BUY IT - so the person you lent the Volvo to now owns it and needs to pay you it's value.
When my mum died, my dad had a really great cash offer for her car. However, one of my cousins needed a car so my dad did him a deal. He was to pay a small amount every month for 3 years. He totalled the car after 3 months and then refused to pay any more, arguing "why should he pay for something he could no longer use?". We had been close friends but I never wanted to see him again after that.

I feel your frustration. I've been a car guy since I was a little kid. I know what is good and what is crap. My knowledge is well known. People for years have asked me for advice on what to buy. The frustrating part that more often than not they do the opposite of what I advise them. Now I don't bother and direct them to spend 15 minutes online searching for said cars reliability. It's quickly obvious what is shit and what is not. If they can't be bothered to do a little research to save themselves some grief, too fucking bad. I have sympathy for the stupid and lazy

After not hearing a word from him for months eventually found out through a mutual friend he'd got himself into drugs & had sold the car to feed his habit. Needless to say that friendship was over & never heard from or saw him again.
Lending cars to 'friends' is a mugs game. Last time I did it, it was so a neighbour could get to a job interview, while hers was in for repairs. She drove it through a speed camera (50 in a 30), and kept shtum. When the letter came, her family got really shirty, blaming me (wait for it) for not warning her that the car was capable of breaking the speed limit! Said it was my responsibility because it was my car. I got a lecture from her aunt, chastising me for being a man with a big powerful car (it's a 1.2 Nissan Micra), then her dad offered me £1000 to take her points (I guess she already had 9), and called me selfish for saying no. In the end, I had to just write to the Authority dealing with the fine, explained the circumstances and gave them her contact details. The girl in question never spoke to me again, never even thanked me for loan of the car, and her family shit-talked me all over town, accusing me of all sorts. Thing was, I wasn't even cross to begin with. I just wanted her to deal with it in an adult fashion. The whole thing left me with a very sour taste in my mouth. Never again.

I’ll quickly tell you a story about cars. I’m not asking for one though. I wanted to take my old camper off the road for some much needed repairs but therefore needed a car to get about in (I used to have the camper for camping and a car for cheap driving). I’ve always had older vehicles but generally bought well because I know enough to find a half decent car. I went to look at 4 cars over the cause of a month and I walked away from all of them, they were all expensive for what they were and broken in various ways. A friend sold me her car (with a few issues) for a very cheap price. I decided to have a new clutch and flywheel put on because the existing one seemed a bit dodgy (was working fine but showing signed of wear.) I also had to have the cam belt done. The new clutch slipped, garage told me it was fine, I decided to have the whole job done again at another garage wanting to put the whole affair behind me - new clutch slips! In the meantime I had the cam belt service done, the new water pump seal failed instantly and 3 new pumps were fitted before one sealed. There was then a belt or pulley noise associated with the new belt, I’ve had it looked at twice and it’s still making the same noise. I know a bit about cars and have always had pretty good luck with the old bangers I buy. Now I have heard from a good few mechanics that replacement parts are rubbish and I’m convinced that the problems are due to this rather than dodgy mechanics, both garages I went to are highly recommended places with fairly high labour costs. So I now have a camper van which still hasn’t been repaired (it’s desperate) and a car which should have been cheap which has cost me a small fortune which I drive along feeling anxious that something will go bang. Cars I used to buy for a grand or so are now more like 5 grand and the ones I looked at were clearly at the end of their life. It’s depressing to say the least.
If you lent me a car and I crashed it I'd have had the decency to let you know. I'm gutted I didn't get the Saab but I hope I made the short list with my C5. 😅

I too lent a car to someone. A Volvo 440. They said they wanted to buy it too, but they just wanted to use it until they moved house. Last time that happened to me.
