I love how Tom Cruise fought for Val Kilmer to be in this movie.
He fought Val Kilmer for Val Kilmer to be in the movie. He had already said he was too sick work. Cruise convinced him to do a quick scene with minimal talking.
Interestingly enough, having Val Kilmer (Ice Man) as Admiral of the Pacific Fleet of the US Navy helps the narrative of why Maverick was chosen for the assignment. With his recklessness, any other person would have chosen someone else but Maverick had the accolades and the Admiral's favor. Good move from Cruise to get that character in.
The sequel needs Iceman
He didn't. Both the director and producers already wanted him in the movie.

Yeah almost no one draws box office with their name alone anymore, you can probably count the actors and directors who can on like one hand, but Tom still does it.
@@KS-xk2so I mean, what actor puts together his own massive blockbusters himself? Not a studio- it’s HIM behind the entire project? I believe he is the last of that breed with enough clout, draw, and drive to do that these days.
@@greenacres1909 Tom Hanks is universally liked enough to draw with his name alone.... maybe Leo as well. Those are the only actors I can think of... maybe Meryl Streep too. That being said, none of them are as intense as Cruise is, so they wouldn't be as involved as he clearly was for this picture. Some directors can still draw with name power too.... like Scorcese, Tarantino, Nolan, Spiellburg or James Cameron.
@@KS-xk2so I would agree with all of that. Hanks is putting together a Band of Brothers sequel, and Leo certainly has clout, but Cruise has certainly caught fire lately- he just cares about giving the audience what they are craving and it shows.
@@greenacres1909 For sure. Cruise is really passionate about keeping the idea of the big blockbuster you have to see IN theatres alive as well. Which I think is great..... makes sense why he wants it too, not only is Tom a major film fan in general, but he makes STUPID bank off his backend deals lol. He's made like 140 million from this movie, its pretty wild.
This is what a big screen blockbuster should be. Loved it. True story: My dad took me to see the original in the theaters. When this one came to theaters, I took my dad to see it.

My dad took me to see the original, but sadly, now he is like up there. So I took my son to see the this new one...
Unfortunately the last film I got to see with my dad was the awful fourth Bourne movie, but the one before that was Seven Psychopaths which we both loved. And before that Return of the King, Serenity and so many more that we both enjoyed together. Enjoy your time with him whilst you can!

My personal favourite moment in the movie is when Maverick runs the course. It's like when the coach shows you why he is the coach.
Best, "Don't tell me it can't be done", moment I've seen on film.
God, so many great moments. I teared up during the pre-take off conversation with Maverick and Hondo, and when those canopies started descending and that music welled up, I lost it.

This movie has so many parallels with the Star Wars original trilogy.

Easily the most surprising movie I’ve ever seen. When I saw they were making a Top Gun sequel I totally disregarded it and thought it was just a cheap cash grab wanting to capitalize on the wave of 80’s nostalgia. And it’s easily my favorite movie of the year and one of the best I’ve seen in the last handful of years as well.
I would have thought that too when they announced they wanted to make a sequel, but what got me on board was when I heard Tom Cruise basically said he refuse to be in the sequel unless they use real planes and not CGI. When he said that and also knowing how dedicated Tom Cruise has been to entertaining his audience lately, that actually kind of reassured me that it would at least be decent. But damn, they WAY exceeded my expectations.
same. reviving old movies decades later never turns out good, but the story, pacing, characters, motives, romance, and the way they filmed the flight scenes were all really well done
biggest reason Tom waited so long just for that reason, apparently he waited and was reluctant to do it even now, but the production team was right and when he learnt it wasnt a gimmick he went for it.

He's the last real action star we have left. The last one from the old era that actually gets his hands dirty on set. Tom Cruise is the GOAT.

The scene with Iceman is so heart wrenching on many levels. It’s so tough to see what throat cancer has done to Val Kilmer. I cried when he actually spoke.

@@edecioparedes7424 Jack didn’t have anything to do with his voice. A company called Sonantic created an AI program that used many, many sources taken from multiple movies to understand how he speaks. Then they managed to get it to the correct speed and levels where it dubbed right over him. AI is kinda freaky.

Penny Benjamin, Jennifer Connelly's character, was mentioned in the original Top Gun from 1986. She was the admiral's teenage daughter that got Maverick into trouble the first time, before he went to Top Gun.
I waited thru the end credits just to confirm her last name was Benjamin 🙂

When Rooster yelled "Come on Mav, do some of that pilot shit!" That was a great call back to Goose from the original.
It was a great callback, but it did slightly cross a line with me, because it was delivered word for word EXACTLY as it was in the original. It wouldn't shock me at all if they told me they dubbed Goose's voice in for that part. In other words, it was just a fraction to "on point" for me. Bothered me for all of a second and a half and I moved on.
Also the line saying "this is not good"
Yeah, outside of the aerial/action scenes, the most successful moments for me where the callback/nostalgia moments. Very little of the truly original character moments and beats landed with me, largely because there wasn't character development and earned character growth. Ex: Rooster just grows because the story needed it, nothing caused or spurred on the change other than necessity for the story.

A lot can be said about Tom Cruise, but what cannot ever be denied is that the man knows how to make an entertaining movie. This was absolutely one of the best experiences I ever had in a theater, loved every second of it.
The part where the admiral's voice cracks when he gives the order to not go back for Maverick hits hard. As a CO to have to make that kind of decision to write off a mans life to save the others is insane.
Salute to john Hamm’s acting
Most movies would have him act as if he doesn't care, but in hindsight, he's only doing what for the good of the team and Navy.
Maverick's "new" love interest is an old flame, Penny Benjamin. She was mentioned twice in the original Top Gun.

@@SGTMARSHALL1 I'd been thinking exactly this cause Tom had this habit that when he was younger he'd star alongside women like McGillis who were slightly older and now that he's in his 60s, he didn't call her back to resume the role of Charlie because she's older now and wouldn't portray the image he wants, so he gets someone younger like Jennifer to fill that role, so I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen with Rooster, but if they are going to do another one, I'd rather have it happen sooner, because I don't wanna have to wait another 36yrs to get a new one with this Rooster and Hangman
I’ve seen this movie 3 times in the theater and it’s Tom Cruise’s masterpiece on how to make audiences emotionally connect with an action movie.
I've seen it 3X as well, showing my support and admiration for this instant classic!
Fourth time today, and grabbed a friend to see it for his first. He wants to see it again on the big screen before it leaves.👍
I love it when Maverick walks into the diner, asks where he is, and the kid says, "Earth". Great reaction!

This is one of those increasingly rare gems where Hollywood truly gets it right. It's everything a movie should be, but too often isn't. Nothing but praise for this film.
Hollywood had NOTHING to do with this. Hollywood HATES that this film is doing so well and all their "woke" trash is failing. This was all Tom Cruise from beginning to end. He might be crazy - but he's crazy GOOD. And it's beyond fantastic that Cruise gets to rub it in their faces and prove he was right all along.

Yeah at first, When they started making this i rolled my eyes because i thought i was just going to be another star wars sequel Bullshit, but this one proved That there are still people in hollywood that know how to make magnificent movies, and it sure as hell ain't Disney.
I don’t think Hollywood got this one right. Tom Cruise was the force behind this and he made sure it was made right.
This is the stable what a big blockbuster action movie should be, not like Transformers, Fast and Furious, and non-sense like that that insults people's intelligence.
I love how they worked off-hand comments about "going ballistic with an admirals daughter" and turned Penny Benjamin into a fully fledged character with a a history and chemistry with Maverick. Such a great callback that was down with style.

Honestly, I never thought Iceman in the 1st Top Gun was obnoxious. We felt that because he was our man's rival, but he was a voice of reason for Mav in many scenes and also reached out to him in his time of need. It was an interesting dynamic because Ice was a "by the book" professional pilot, whereas Maverick was,well, a maverick. I love how they brought them back together here. It looks like Ice is still a professional military mind, but he has understood the value Mav brings that no one else in the Navy does.

A force that is undisciplined cannot function as team and is incomplete. A force that is inflexible cannot adapt or anticipate. The book is a good guide, but being able to modify one's actions to a situation based on both the book and intuition is what wins the day. Maverick started out as undisciplined, but eventually learned to appreciate the book and to excel beyond it. Iceman understood that. His own understanding that the book could make you good, great even, but sometimes you run into something the book doesn't tell you about. In that moment, scant as it is, you have to be a pilot who can comprehend the situation and react instinctively the first time, every time. If he respected Maverick it was because he understood that his instincts were every bit the equal of his own skill, something you cannot teach, only perceive and promote in an upcoming pilot.
You're so right. Ice was more like Phoenix/rooster and hangman was more similar to young maverick.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if in one rewrite of the script, Iceman was meant to be the protagonist. Not to mention how much Rooster acts like him.

I love how Maverick and Iceman became lifelong friends after that rivalry they had in the first. Also cool how he showed so much respect to Val making him such a badass in this film as Admiral of the Pacific Fleet.
It showed in real life to as Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise are close friends and the emotions in scenes Cruise stated in a interview were real and enjoyed together again after 34 years since the original to when filmed Top Gun: Maverick.
I feel like a big part of that is that Iceman knows that he is responsible for Goose's death. Yes, it was ruled a mechanical failure, I believe, but Iceman cut Maverick off, could have cleared sooner, was in fact told by both Maverick and Goose to either take the shot or clear, and was told that Maverick had the shot from where he was. He normally flies ice cold with no mistakes, but he let the competition get to him.
This movie deserves all the praise it's gotten and everyone should see it.

Say what you want about Tom Cruise, he makes movies for the audience and that's why his films do well. Top gun Maverick is flawless.
1 flaw. The runtime was not long enough. needed to be at least 3 hours XD
I have my issues with Tom, but he DOES really care about giving the audience what they want!
It is most DEFINITELY a Love Letter to aviation and aviation enthusiasts!!
There's 1 flaw. The flyby should have been better or at least has some comedic elements in it like the original. The flyby is also one of the things that made TOPGUN a famous classic film.
My son took me to see the sequel this Father’s Day
This movie was so epic because it brought back those late 80s to mid 90s summer blockbusters' feel. You've got the action and the thrill, the characters and their legacy, the relationships, the adrenaline rush scenes, as little as possible CGI and a great ending. If all actors and directors were as dedicated as Tom Cruise to their craft, their films and their stories, we wouldn't had a bad movie.
It’s how we remember 80’s movies, not how they actually were. That’s a huge achievement.

Hate to break it to you but all the planes were CGI. In fact there were over 2,400 vfx shots in the movie.
To me this was as close to a perfect movie as it gets. Its fun, its got feels, its got S-Tier action, amazing cinematography, tasteful callbacks to the first, so many unexpected moments at the end, crazy sound design. There is almost nothing I would change about the movie. This movie absolutely brought out the little kid in me with fighter jets and and missiles and crazy chaos at the end. 10/10 for me
After serving 22 years in the military. I have to say this was a proper tribute to the ALL military. The scene in which Captain Mitchell had to tell Penny he was deploying. This scene was done perfectly. It is a somber moment. I remember wishing for more time with my children or spouse. My daughter even cried at that part. She had been through it. I remember the sound of her crying and asking me not to go when I was walking towards my departure gate on the first deployment that she was old enough to remember. It broke my heart. It is so hard to leave, but you have to do it. The military officers are like Maverick. They want to not only think of the mission but how his people will come home. This movie had nothing to do with politics at all. It was about the military values. Service before self, teamwork, sacrifice, honor.
Good values are taught in the army. Which makes it the more worse that soldiers are just pawns in bad political games.
@@mr.2cents.846 Yeah.And what also makes things bad is when soldiers are treated like-TRASH-by the army when they are/get wounded in action.Go back to their command and they try to KICK you out the door without TREATMENT.This happened to me,at least they tried to RUSH me out the door,but,I wouldn't let them do it.
I did enjoy that they kept the politics out of this film. Didn't even name the opponent, just "the enemy". It's a smart move.
@@KS-xk2so not naming an enemy also allowed the filmmakers to create their own geography for its country. It cuts out any nitpicking by anyone about another government's capabilities or history.
Shawn, I can't thank you enough for your service! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I wanted to be in the navy since I was very young. My whole family is military strong, and u started high school right at 9/11, and knew I wanted to serve and defend my country. Turns out I have a heart condition and couldn't serve. It was pretty depressing, but now my eldest son is putting in his papers to be a jarhead. I'm so proud of him!

During the promotional tours for the movie, the director Joseph Kosinski talked about the making of the movie. Tom Cruise had always said that he would be open to a sequel if someone came up with a script that worked. Kosinski flew to the location where Cruise was filming one of the Mission Impossible movies. He was given 30 minutes while another scene was being set up. He pitched Cruise the ideas for the movie. After he was finished, Cruise picked up the phone, called the head of Paramount Pictures and said, "It looks like we're making another Top Gun movie."
Kosinski said it was an object lesson in the power wielded by the biggest of movie stars. One call, and the movie was green lighted.
At Tom Hanks' peak, he only *kind of* had that kind of pull. Apollo 13 probably wouldn't have been made without him pushing, but that's about it.
Say what you want about Tom Cruise, he's got genuine star power and talent.
Absolutely incredible. Tom Cruise is the GOAT, no hyperbole.
And it was one of the best financial decisions they have ever made.
Only the biggest. Guys like TC and Clint Eastwood who have far surpassed actor status and are part and parcel of the movie making process. They can literally afford to produce their own movies.
And it shows you how godamm AWESOME Tom Cruise is an actor, he CARES about making GREAT movies and not just money. He is a true actor.

I literally had mu arms and legs wrapped around my husband the last half hour of the movie, it was so intense. He had to peel me off afterward. 😂 We hadn't been to a movie that made us feel THAT happy in years. Loved it so much!

@@WThomas66 China took a direct middle finger with this movie. The film was not shown in china at all because they walked back protests and despite that its a MASSIVE financial success. This might be a nail in the coffin of chinas control of american media.

The movie is so much better than it should’ve been, because the two emotional beats (the Iceman scene and the “it’s what my dad would’ve done” line) land so well.

@@Masterfighterx exactly. In theaters that "thank you for seeing this" was sincere from him. He is a weirdo but really does know how to make films and wants people to be entertained and feel better, or at least FEEL something leaving it.

With that song Hold my hand. Felt like I was walking on air out of the theater. It was a weird feeling, actually feeling good out of a movie.
The admiral that introduces Maverick to the top guns cadets is one of my best friend who I grew up with named Charles Parnell. Tom Cruise like him so much that he put him in the next two mission impossible movies. I'm so excited for him.
Gotta tell you, "Warlock" seemed like a perfect callsign for his character. Parnell somehow gave him unseen depth you could just feel. True talent and much appreciated.
Just to clarify for Val Kilmer's health, last I heard, he's actually been cancer free for a couple years. It's just that he had a tracheotomy as part of his treatment so, it's very difficult for him to speak now. But, I believe his health otherwise is actually pretty good at the moment. According to him, he "feels a lot better than [he] sounds".
Another little detail: he didn't speak in the movie (because he has to use a computerized vocalizer - like Stephen Hawking - to speak now after his surgeries), they actually used an A.I. program to reconstruct his voice from film footage of his, but it's so seamless, I didn't even realize it till I read about what has happened to him over the last decade or so online. It was incredible seeing him in the film, and hope he continues to stay cancer-free and doing well.
@@drayman101 Actually, I just read an article that said that they didn't end up using the AI thing! Since Val Kilmer has been working with the program and doing tests with it, a bunch of articles reported that they were going to use it for the movie but, the director has clarified more recently that they didn't end up going that route. I think the company had the option available but, the filmmakers ultimately just didn't end up using it. Apparently, what they did instead was have Val use his real voice on set and then they just messed around with it a bit in post to make it sound more normal. 'Cause it's easy to forget that they filmed most of "Maverick" in 2018, which was before Val was relying quite as much on a voice box as he is now (it's not really a vocalizer quite like Stephen Hawking's, it's a little different). His voice at that point was very high and weak but, it was still there. If you look up interviews with Val from 2018, you can see that his voice was difficult to understand but, definitely would've given them something to work with in post-production.
Kilmer's acting career is pretty much over now. So he is on his deathbed, as far as the media is concerned.
That's good. I do feel so bad that he has throat cancer, but they gave his character a wonderful end that never fails to tug on the heart strings. I also love that Tom Cruise saluted perfectly; most actors wouldn't put in that little detail.
The Maverick and Iceman scene proved that despite being rivals in the past. Iceman always had his back after Goose dead. Iceman was Maverick's wingman outside of a plane and even in his last breath was drawn Iceman always had Maverick's back later in life.
Also, one thing I love about this film. They succeed to make new characters interesting in just one movie. Rooster, Hangman, Phoenix and Payback are some of the best newcomers in this film. Hangman remind me of Iceman and his rivalry between Rooster remind of the rivalry between Iceman and Maverick. This is notalgia done right.
By the way, I am glad you and your sister have reacted to this film because Tom Cruise continues to show the world why he's still one of the biggest movie stars.
Actually I think the competitive nature between H NGM N and Rooster reflected the Ice Man and Maverick rivalry
I agree totally except I think Hangman was more like Maverick as far as cockiness and pushing the envelope and Rooster was more like Iceman, calm and collected and by the book

I knew some references but only watched Top Gun beginning to end a few months ago in anticipation of the sequel. From pop culture references I always assumed Iceman was a hater or a jerk. Turns out he’s actually very reasonable and just wants people to be safe lol

I got to see this movie three times in a movie theater and all three times I cried. Just an amazing story that they did. It was really worth it

The Val Kilmer scene made me cry like a baby. I'm glad they found a way to pay tribute to him in this movie. The last 45 minutes of this movie is full of surprises, and really elevates the film.

That scene with Ice Man always gets me. Imagine a 30+ year friendship like that and you see your friend, who finished first in his class as a fighter pilot, complete Top Gun hotshot, not even able to talk anymore. It's so heartbreaking.
Thats the exact experience i had when watching it in the cinema, everyone came out cheering, wiping tears from there eyes.

This has been and always will be my all time favorite movie opening! The radio chatter, the flight deck crew doing their thing, the sounds of the jet engines amping up all leading up to that final salute and the steam catapult launching the super hornet into the sunrise - controlled chaos at its best! Being a military brat, I might be biased ☺☺☺
This film was meant to be seen on the big screen. I’m so glad it wasn’t one of those that went straight to streaming during the pandemic. They waited for the right time to release it to theaters and it was well worth the wait. This was one of the best experiences I’ve had watching a movie in theaters in a long time and so glad I didn’t pass on it.

Top Gun Maverick, now the 5th highest grossing domestic film of all time. That's huge. It was an incredible movie, and monumentally better than the first. It's so much better that it doesn't even seem reasonable to compare the two. 10/10.
Great reaction to an exceptional movie. My mom wanted to see it and she's 73, so my brother's family and I took her to see it IMAX because she's never been to an IMAX. When the movie was over she wanted to go back and see it again just like a child in wonder. I'll never forget it.

Another thing I loved was Maverick's character growth between films. In Top Gun, it really was all about him, even over Goose. How many times did he apologize to Goose for something he did. In this one, it was all about others. The mach 10 flight, bringing the team home, showing them the mission could be done, etc. One key part I loved was the difference between the Charlie love scene vs the Penny love scene. The love scene with Charlie was primarily about sex. The love scene with Penny was more about intimacy and trust with a life partner. Perfect for a young hotshot Maverick and a mature Maverick.

I LOVED the evolution of Maverick between the two films! Right from the start, the change is evident. Hondo reminds him of what'll happen to him if he does the test flight; Mav says that he knows what'll happen to everyone else (Hondo and company) if he doesn't. It just continues through the film, and I love it.
Next to Maverick, Penny was one of my favorite characters. She's direct, and she cuts right to the chase. When he tried to say it was a long story (his return), she doubted him; then she asked who he pissed off this time. I LOVED THAT! I also like how, after Ice died, she supports and inspires him to stay with the team. Next scene showed him stealing the F-18, and showing that the mission could be done.
Finally, I liked the scene with Iceman. I like how Ice never forgot that Maverick saved his ass when they were younger, and how he looked out for his friend over the years.
Good points all. I never really got the Mav/Charlie thing, as a kid, even an adult. It just felt manufactured. They did this one so well, with Penny. She made more sense, a lot more actually. And let's face it, it's hard to not watch a beautiful face like Jenny C. Seriously though, the story makes more sense to me, especially after 35 years.
Seen the movie 3x in cinema, 3x at home, and 8x through reaction video's. Yours is the best reaction I've seen!! Because you watched it in cinema you get the full experience. I love so much that you did this in the theater. My husband and I went to see it a couple of weeks ago and it was so nostalgic for us. My husband was a brand new Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy when we saw the first Top Gun in the theater. Now he is a retired Navy Captain and it was so fun reliving all of these moments. This movie makes a point of ribbing Maverick for still being a Captain and for pilots and line officers this is actually something of a truth, but my husband was a chaplain and Captain is the highest rank a chaplain can attain without being appointed the Chief of Chaplains of the Navy. He just retired 3 years ago. Thanks again for this reaction.
I think my favorite part is still when Rooster says “Talk to me Dad.” And then you hear Mav say “Don’t think, just do.”
Even if Bradley was angry, Mav really did help practically raise him, he was his main male figure in his life, so he really does see him as a second dad.
Picked on that too. It really was a subtle but highly emotional moment.

So glad I got to see this in the theater, with my wife and two daughters alongside. They don’t normally like military or action movies, but they all loved Maverick. Tom Cruise definitely gave this film 110%.

*TRUE STORY:* I saw this in the theater with my daughter and niece (12 & 13) after the new Jurassic World. Both said it "blew the dinosaurs out of the water." They went back 4 times to see it again.
Bonus Fun Fact: I saw the original twice in one day as a 6 year old. Somehow my genius older brother (11) thought he could talk his way in to them letting us into the R-Rated Stallone movie "Cobra." His $2 bribe didn't work. So we watched Top Gun again 🤣🤣🤣

I'm not shocked in the case of Jurassic World Dominion. That movie was straight-up AWFUL, and not even in an entertaining way. They did the impossible and gave all these charismatic actors nothing to work with and word salad for dialog... Did the impossible and made dinosaurs BORING.
It was a thoughtless bait-and-switch to give us the same tired formula again with nothing tying that heap of garbage together but a handful of requisite beats that have no impact because the script doesn't care.
Maverick is a movie that was FASTIDIOUS in pushing the envelope and putting its level best into shooting the most exciting and emotionally resonant film it possibly could have wrung out of the original's cheesy 80's legacy. Real planes, real stunts, and defied the tropey "hero from thirty year old movie returns as a has-been to show the young'ns how it's DONE" premise to deliver something truly remarkable.
It's only natural, even if you don't know anything about film or screenwriting, that you'd gravitate towards the movie that really cared to make you feel something in that seat, and wasn't just chasing the almighty dollar...

In the original movie Goose's wife, played by Meg Ryan, tells Charlie, Maverick's girlfriend, a story about going ballistic with Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly), the admiral's daughter. In this movie, Maverick's love interest is Penny Benjamin. So, it kind of comes full circle for Maverick.
Not to take away from the aura itself of the movie, but that enemy maneuver to dodge the missle was a thing of beauty!!!

This was honestly one of the best movie theater experiences Ive ever had in my life when I saw it. I was literally levitating out of my chair for like the last 30-40 mins of the movie lmao. Just goes to show how actually emphasizing realism over CGI in movies can make such a huge difference, you could literally see the actors on the brink of passing out from G force on screen lol. Insane levels of production and huge props to the cast for putting themselves in real F18s. Just absolutely wild, breathless action scenes.
100% same. Everyone cried and laughed and clapped standing O at the end. Saw it 2 days after it was released. The crowd was pumped going in. Not one empty seat. Everyone talking to each other about what was going to happen and rhen talking and crying and laughing after we all saw it. Strangers. Together sharing the experience. It was terrific.

The best moment for me was Iceman and Maverick's scene. They've grown beyond their friendly rivalry, and are somewhat civil. Also, it was so touching the way they wrote Val Kilmer's condition into the script, and gave him an emotional send off.
Everyone in the theater was crying, first at Iceman's and Maverick's face to face, and second at Iceman's funeral. It was .... simply amazing.
Somewhat civil might be an understatement, they seemed to be genuinely good friends by now. It seems like Iceman has spent the last 30 years constantly pulling Mav out of jams. You don't do that over and over again for anything but a friend.
Oh they are more than somewhat civil. It's pretty obvious from how close he even seemed to Ice Man's wife that they became best friends after the events of the first Top Gun.

Hypersonic manned aircraft are little more than concept art and math equations right now. There’s also very little practical use for a manned hypersonic aircraft anymore. Between satellites and UAVs, manned spy planes are relics of the past.

14:18 people forget how great of an actor Tom Cruise really is. The scene was emotional, short and perfect knowing Val Kilmer's real life complications with throat cancer. Love that scene so much.
Fun fact: the plane we see Pete Mitchell working on at the beginning and end of the movie is Tom Cruise’s personally owned airplane! It’s a P-51 Mustang that was built in 1946.
He actually flew the plane with Jennifer Connelly for the ending scene!

Fun fact: Phoenix has a line about Mav being an ace at the end. This would be a BIG deal in the real world. Aces are pilots with 5 or more aerial victories. In World War II there were a number of American Aces. But as air combat changed , aerial victories became much less frequent. So much so that there hasnt been an Ace since Vietnam. The last pilot to become an Ace was Steve Ritchie. He is now 80 years old. There is also still one remaining American Triple Ace from WWII (with 16.25 victories). His name is C.E. " Bud" Anderson. He scored his victories in a P-51 mustang much like the one Mav flies at the end of the movie. He is 100 years old.
I think there’s a couple Israeli aces still kicking. Possibly Pakistani, Iranian, Iraqi, and Egyptian too.

Yah the last of the wars in Israel in the 80s made the last generation of confirmed aces (maybe after everything in Ukraine finishes we will have a few more) but even then that shows that in roughly 40 years no single piolt has shot down five planes. Maverick having 5 confirmed kills would be huge news he would achieve near God like status as a piolt

This movie had no right to be this good. It was suppoused to be a sequel to a good, but simple and corny, action movie. This had so much heart.
In the 80/90's, this would have been a good movie on par with Aliens etc. I think it stands out so much now because so many other movies deny the sheer simple pleasure of an action packed heroes journey. Not taking anything away from the film, but it would be hard not to be successful with this flick when you look around at what passes for cinema entertainment these days....

It made it a nice movie, and the last action scene was pretty awesome. The nostalgia was great. I gave it a 7/10, and am glad I saw it in the theatre because it was a good movie theatre experience. Not sure I'd be looking to see it again on the small screen though, but these reactions are interesting with the best parts edited in.

I'm a 53 year old guy that saw the original in the theater. I have loved this movie ever since. My wife and I went to see this in the theater earlier in the summer. I'm an Army veteran of two wars and I've turned into such a softy that I was just in happy tears through so much of this movie. It tugged on the nostalgia strings perfectly. I didn't even mind the crazily contrived way they got mav back in an F-14 with rooster. Us old timers finally got closure because Maverick "brought Goose home" metaphorically.
When a movie like that can make a theater full of tough men get emotional near the end. That's just the best damn movie you can ever make.
When I was at the theater, there were a lot of guys trying to hide their emotions. Me included. It was hard keeping it in.

This is a proper sequel. It stands on its own without ignoring the original. Tom made it a point to hold this movie until theaters were back in action because he knew people would love it in that format first. I was very hesitant because the original was so good, but I was beyond thrilled with how this turned out.
The first Top Gun came out in May 1986, I remember riding my bike to the theater in my hometown to see it as a teenager.
I've watched this twice in the last week.
I LOVED the original movie so I was sceptical they could do another as good. They somehow made a movie better than the original, keeping the same audio/visual language, and closed the loops opened in the first movie.
If I had to describe it in a word, it would be SATISFYING. I'm glad you both enjoyed it as much as I did.
When Maverick takes control to show it can be done is one of the greatest moments in action movie history
The thing that's also cool is how they put in a lot of little details to make things more realistic that most people won't even realize. Like in the beginning when he's preparing to do the Mach 10 flight, you see him running on a treadmill with an oxygen mask on. That's actually something real pilots do if they are planning on doing a high altitude flight since the high altitude has lower pressure and they don't want to fully pressurize the suit they're wearing because it'll become cumbersome, they have to prevent the nitrogen in their blood from turning into bubbles by trying to flush out as much nitrogen as they can by breathing in pure oxygen. The exercise helps their body absorb more of that oxygen and expel more of the nitrogen. Then when he's suited up you see them carrying a box that's hooked up to the suit. In the real world, that is an air conditioning unit since it's really hot inside the suit, once in the plane they hook it up to the plane which has an air conditioning unit built in to continue to cool the pilot.
The stick on the experimental aircraft has a little skunk on it, because Lockheed Martin's test program to develop these experimental aircraft is called Skunk Works. Famously they developed the SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk, F-22 Raptor, and the F-35 Lightning II.
Then later in the movie when they show Tom Cruise (Maverick) being catapulted from the aircraft carrier, you see him give the thumbs up, salute, then he holds what looks like a grab bar you see in a car. The reason for that is that the plane actually is automated for that catapult sequence, it actually controls the stick for that first moment so the pilot isn't supposed to touch the stick or else it can interfere with that. In the beginning some pilots would forget to let go of the stick since that's not something they normally do. So they instituted that routine of the pilot grabbing that bar, the shooter on the outside verifies that he sees his hand on that bar and then catapults him. That ensures that his hand is off the stick.
Like, little details like that which they easily could have left out and 99% of the audience wouldn't have known the difference. So I'm glad they put those things in. I also appreciate that the controller in the AWACS aircraft, the one with that big dish on top that was updating the team on where the enemy aircraft were, you see her in a room lit only with red light relaying information to them, was the real deal and not an actress. She actually does that for a living and you could totally tell because she delivers those lines with such confidence that you can tell she says those kind of things on a daily basis and it's not lines she tried to memorize...
I'll throw in that Lockheed Martin Skunk Works helped with the Darkstar design.
And the controller in the E-2 is an actual E-2 controller, not an actor. She was called in as a dialogue coach, but the Navy Rep sold Kosinski on just having her play the part. So that is completely authentic.

Were the carrier deck crewmembers Navy personnel too rather than extras? I figured since the shots of the back of Maverick's head looking forward is actually the Navy pilot that flew the plane wearing Maverick's helmet.

I really love this movie I've watched many times. a week ago I brought my dad in IMAX like we're just only 2 in theater and it's the last screening (actually they bring back in IMAX only for limited time) before the Avater re-release. I know my dad really into this kind of movies. and seeing his reaction in this film is the same as I did. The best film and an Oscar Picture for me. I can watch it over and over again every scenes are perfect. From start to finish.
The scene where he hits Mach 9 and said "Talk to me Goose" I already felt onions in my eyes. I thought to myself WTF already you got to be kidding me...
To anyone reading this that has not seen this movie on a big screen in a theater. You need to get out of the house and go see this movie. Do not wait until it comes on a streaming service or DVD/Blue Ray, save that for the second, third, etc time. You have to get to a theater to watch this movie the first time. Trust me. This is not like all the other movies you've seen over the past 30 years. Nice review ladies. I loved seeing the tears come to your eyes.

I had no idea it was still in theaters. Everything goes to streaming so fast these days. Very pleasantly surprised that I was able to make it to a theater earlier this week and see it. No matter how big your TV is, this is one that really should be seen in a theater.

The Dark Knight
The original Jurassic Park for me. It was so freaking loud. Not sure if it was just the theater or not. It was amazing either way though. Everyone applauding at the end was a first for me. As an adult, this is definitely my #1.
I saw this six times in theaters and getting to see someone watch it for the first time was so much fun.
I love her sister's face when the enemy plane does the Cobra maneuver to avoid Maverick's missile!
This movie was a masterpiece and is a PERFECT sequel if not a nearly perfect movie.
It had the perfect balance of nostalgia, character growth, new characters where you liked ALL of them, just so much attention to detail - even the love interest being Penny the infamous admirals daughter.
The chemistry between all the cast was A+ and I cared about everyone.
And holy shit did they not let up off the throttle - I can't remember the last time a movie kept me on the edge of my seat the entire movie like that.
Val Kilmers cameo was just icing on the cake.

The first one was my first movie in theaters in 1986. I'm a 44-year-old man and cried several times during this movie watching it with my dad and brother in the theater Father's Day weekend. It hits every nerve, and to watch it with "the boys" 36 years later made the movie hit that much more.

The old fighter plane they're working on and flying at the end is Tom Cruise's actual plane.
Took my Mom and Dad (80 and 82) to see this a couple months ago. Was worried the sound may be too much for them, but they loved it. We had seen the original in theaters also, but this one seemed different for some reason, and not just because we saw it together. Top Gun in 86 was just another movie, this one was an anomaly among the dreck being spewed from Hollywood. Pure entertainment, no message, no weird ass plot devices, just a simple story artfully depicted.

While the aerial/actions scenes where better, that's it. The original story, characters, character dev/growth, and soundtrack, were all better.

Such an outstanding follow up to the original Top Gun. I had just turned 14 when the original movie came out and saw it in the theater with my friends. Top Gun Maverick brought back all those old memories and made new ones. All the actors were great and the story line was as well. I loved how they tied the ending with Maverick and Rooster flying together in the F-14 as a homage to Maverick and Goose. Plus….the F-14 got a proper send off as well since it was retired from service in 2006. In reality, the F-14 Tomcat was a legendary Navy fighter plane. She so deserved one last cameo appearance in the movie that helped make her so well known and regarded aside from her exceptional service record. 100% props to the movie makers for recognizing that and doing it well. This movie had everything. I loved it and even got a bit teary eyed at the end. 😃🤘Thank you ladies for sharing your reaction 😃
Fantastic job of cutting the film down to 30 minutes but capturing the story so well. I’m about to see it for the 15th time in the theatre and I’m as excited as I was the first time I saw it. It’s just such a fantastic movie that does everything so well. This has to cement Tom Cruise’s place as one of the best movie stars of all time.

As a 20-year Navy Vet, 14 years sea duty. 4.5 on a carrier the USS Constellation CV-64. Based at North Island. This really brings back Memories. Was a AIC ( Air Intercept Controller ) W17A. I talked to the pilots during their sorties. The same one as the lady in the dark space talking to them in this film. I usually used the call sign Duke. I Have to admit. They were pretty dam accurate with the lingo and most of the tactics in this film. There were a few phony parts to this. Over all, I actually liked it better than the original. I like how they paid tribute to the original film. USN OSC ( SW ) AIC Retired. The pictures on my profile here is me on that carrier standing in front of an F-14 Tomcat. This is the very aircraft I controlled.
When they do a bomb drop mission like in the movie. Do they really use 1 jet to laser the target and 1 to drop the bomb? Or is that old tech?

That airplane at the end is Cruise’s personal P-51. That was him flying it.
