  • Romania and Bulgaria have been given the green light to become members of the European Union's (EU) border-free Schengen travel zone.
It means that from 1 January 2025, it will be possible to drive all the way to France, Spain or Norway without a passport.
The decision was long awaited in Bulgaria and Romania. Both countries joined the EU 17 years ago.
But for truck drivers, the border bureaucracy is not over yet.

As a Bulgarian citizen, this is great news for us Bulgarians and Romanians, but also for the Greeks, who have been part of Schengen for many years but don’t share a border with another Schengen member country. So, we could say that Schengen has expanded by three whole countries.
Now, our next goal as Bulgarians is to join the Eurozone, because we struggle with high levels of corruption, and we would like to have more oversight from Europe. Also, Russian influence in our country is quite strong, especially since the war in Ukraine. This is why I want us to integrate more with Europe as quickly as possible, as Euroscepticism is on the rise.

@@Vercixx You're absolutely right: this is an EU agreement, not just one between BG and RO. Regarding the "mini-Schengen" idea which had been circulating for the past few years, sure, BG and RO could have implemented borderless travel between them, but that would have put them in breach of the very requirements (i.e. tightly controlled national borders) for joining the actual Schengen. I know it sounds Kafkaesque, but that's often the case with multilateral treaties; the general rules often don't account for special cases. In any case, the wait is finally over - congrats!

    • @Vercixx
      @Vercixx

@@karlcx Schengen membership came after 18 years of joining the EU and after 15 yeas of meeting the technical criteria for joining Schengen. 15 years of waiting for hours at the border between RO and BG like cattle. 15 years that could have been a smooth ride between RO and BG had they implemented the mini Schengen. 15 years that could have been 30 years cause there was no real reason to keep RO and BG out of Schengen other than the political will of some countries.

When an investigative journalist Simon Milkov was about to share the truth about a murder of a young, 24 year old boy, covered by the police and the court in a small town in Bulgaria. This journalist was unlawfully arrested, humiliated and beaten by the policemen. Thousands of people were out in the cold several time to literally scream for justice and none Bulgarian media showed them. It all is only streamed in Facebook. This information was taken up by the BBC without any additional verification or investigation. There was no evidence that migrants passed through Romania-not from Frontex, nor from other countries, this was a lie from the Austrian government.
The Balkan route to western countries went from Greece through former Yugoslav countries, and in this matter, Austrian authorities prioritized their local electoral interests over EU principles, as well as over the significant losses suffered by Romania and Bulgaria. Also the EU proved too weak to intervene effectively and this situation resulted in a rise of euroscepticism in our country.

The real stats are published in the official reports of the Bulgarian BP that can be seen online. For the period 01.01-31.10.2023: 170,214 migrants tried to cross the border. For the period 01.01-31.10.2024: 50,755 tried to do it. This is 70.18% decrease. The decrease is a combination between the better organisation and help from Frontex and also that less people come from the refugee camps in Tyrkey and from Syria. Some of the refugees that ell in this stats are returned back, some receive their refugee status and stay, some agree to go back voluntarily. 170k and 50k are the total numbers of people that tried to cross the Bulgarian border 99% of which on the Bulgarian-turkish border and just a few on the other borders with Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, Romania and the Black Sea...

@@mmmnnnnnnmmm In December 2022, when Austria denied the entry of both countries for the first time, they claimed that 75k migrants, out of a total of around 100k asylum seekers, had entered their country using the Bulgaria-Romania-Hungary route. However, according to official reports from Frontex for the same year, only 3574 migrants passed through Romania. I don't deny that there may have been issues at the Turkey-Bulgaria border, I don't know the context very well, but Austria should have taken the same approach as the Netherlands did that year, blocking only Bulgaria's entry.

We had no right to foreign passports, we had no right to leave the country. We needed a special document to even approach the 30 kilometer zone around the border. What I am describing to you is not North Korea, but the reality of the countries that were enslaved by the USSR for 45 years. Europol: The EU agency for law enforcement cooperation, Europol, has become a central pillar of the EU’s internal security. Europol facilitates the exchange of information and coordinates joint operations against organized crime and terrorism.
Schengen Information System (SIS): The SIS has been enhanced to improve the sharing of information on wanted, missing persons, and stolen objects. This system allows police forces to quickly access crucial data for investigations.
Prüm Treaty: This treaty introduced the exchange of biometric data, such as DNA and fingerprints, among member countries, improving the ability to identify and prosecute criminals.

Now that the election is over and we know the far right will not enter the next government, I believe this is why they reversed their decision.
