I recently purchased two ancient F contra-alto trumpets. The old boys could sight-read parts in any key and play them in any key. I am going to force myself to play the Charlier. Perhaps by the end of the 36th etude I'll have learned the knack of it. Or not.

I've been playing this etude since the 60's when I began playing trumpet. When I took up the horn I rediscovered these etudes on Bb horn when looking for something to play. They never get old- unlike me. And as you say, they keep one in playing-shape. It's nice hearing someone else play them for a change! Have you tried playing them on Eb (soprano) trumpet? I still do that once every so often.

@@patstuckemeyer3298 That is a different set of etudes that was originally written for trombone (you can see a preview on the trumpet transcription of this book that Hickeys mentions or on IMSLP).
As far as I know, if you want to play these on a low brass instrument, you have to buy the trumpet version and learn to read Bb Treble clef

Overall, excellent performance and tone. Interesting, I believe the Charlier etudes were written for Bb trumpet. Mr Hardenberger performs on a C trumpet without transposing. I do prefer the timbre of Bb trumpet, so this would be my only request. Anybody know which brands of trumpet and mouthpiece (and size) he prefers to use?
