    I've gotten to the point where basic TH-cam tutorials don't really teach me much anymore so I started watching professionals at work. This guy is obviously a legend, but on top of that by just comparing/contrasting his approach and workflow he is a cut above so many others. I wrote down his name (a little ashamed of not already knowing it) and I'll be looking heavily into his work. These MixCon classes are freaking awesome.

    Jimmy is an incredible engineer and one of the most humble music behind the velvet rope stars you will ever meet. I was blessed to spend some time interviewing him for a magazine I owned/ published years ago.

    I've been seeing Senator Jimmy D's name on Timbalands productions for years. I got the chance to see him face to face at a Red Lobster in Garden Grove California with a beautiful lady that night. And actually it wasn't face to face because I'm 5' 7" and he's like 6' 5" lmao. Anyways! He's one of my favorite audio engineers. And I love his work.

    hmmm, I gotta say, I love Jimmy and I really admire his history of works, HOWEVER...there are a couple of things in this video that makes me go "oh lordylordy!"...one example is at 10:43 where he talks about the bass. He says he added a compressor at the end of the chain to bring it all together. Well..that compressor has the sidechain On but with No input. That means the compressor does nothing, but still he says he can tell a difference ;) lol. But okay, he is just a human like everyone else..sometimes we get tricked ;) You all know how it is..we gotta critique everything here on the internet! hehe!.Great video anyways with a lot of great tricks, tips and insight! Inspiring :) Thank you very much to both SS and Jimmy :)

    • @dantei.1194
      @dantei.1194 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good point! And eyes too, for catching this one! Meh... stuff like this makes me go facepalm. At least what he says when listening to... the lack of action of that compressor... is actually correct and pretty common way to use a compressor, especially with fast and/or funky bass lines. The peak:average level ratio without heavy compression tends to be huge.

      I lost count of how many times I went ahead and equalized my ass off on an bypassed equalizer.. my head did the transformation work, because I knew what change I was expecting, my head simply "put it there". Long story short.. in the end I usually realize the Equalizer is bypassed... fun fact: If I switch it ON the changes I made are usually pretty much exactly what I intended to do. It's the weirdest thing. I'm willing to bet that the compressor would do great work if he unchecked the sidechain.

      I do this with students sometimes. I sit there EQing and compressing, twiddling knobs etc, and looking at them and nodding and saying "Yeh!! Booom! Check this!!! Oh yeh!" Pulling the bass face. But I am doing nothing. In bypass. They are all nodding and saying "Yeh man, that's it! Killer! Dope!" I say "Mix with your ears. Close your eyes!" Point made.

    I love what he did to the kick and bass in pro tools. But I gotta say this bettermaker limiter is more than a limiter to my ears. It's taking sounds, saturating them, widening and making them louder all at the same time. I have to work harder to get the results the bettermaker simply delivers. Also another thing to take away from this is: "If it isn't fun, why are you doing it?" I do a lot of things for other reasons than fun and I think that's valid, but when it comes to sounddesign this sounds like very solid advice!

  • @davidgann3251

    The pops and clicks at the beginning and ending of the bass playing were driving me nuts when it was in solo. I would have had to put fade in and fade outs on the bass track or clean it up somehow. It didn't seem to poke out as much in the mix but it did add some noise. Guess it's just my CDO. What's CDO? OCD, put in alphabetical order! That Bettermaker sounds nice!

    One thing I wonder why the producer didn't do is cleaning up the bass, all those double notes sounds … not so nice. Almost as if they didn't hear this issue when doing the remix.
    But nice bass sound from Jimmy.
    And the curious should listen to Depeche Mode Waiting for the Night, especially the outro. : )

      Lol, my chest is like the most overdeveloped part of my body. Too much incline bench :-) You're right though, that is a badly fitting t-shirt.
      My peak before all the gyms closed was benching 225 at a bodyweight of 150 which is not too bad. But I try not to flaunt the goods too much. I'm going for the Ned Flanders aesthetic here: Ill fitting shirts hiding the solid rock that lurks beneath. X-D

      Dude, we're not here to talk about the song, we are here to learn about engineering music, how to do things right inside a mix and just a friendly reminder: everything you hear is music or sound.
      Neat advice from me: just don't watch the video.
