  • Weather or other circumstances may make outdoor cooking difficult or even impossible during a power outage. Cooking indoors is safer and much more convenient. In today's video, I share how easy it is to cook indoors using the VESTA and the EMBER. They burn canned heat for fuel, making them safe to use inside your kitchen. Canned heat is safe and easy to store.

I became a disaster preparedness educator and community disaster response volunteer after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and became a prepper during the Y2K fiasco. How have I not known about the EMBER??? I plan to use my single burner butane stove. I just upgraded to the duel fuel Grill Boss, so I can take advantage of propane (I have more propane than butane stored and usually cook outdoors). Now I have a backup butane-only stove ("Two is one, one is none").

“Two is one, one is none.” Absolutely correct. After prepping for about twenty years, I’m still shocked when people ask me what it means. Most people are not prepping for an emergency. Stay safe everyone! Keep prepping every day. It’s the only way.

It is seldom too cold or too windy or too rainy here in southern Nevada for outdoor cooking. It does get too hot in summer for outdoor cooking, but if our AC units stopped working during a summer power outage we would have to evacuate. We have a small slow cooker and a small lunch box size "oven" that we bought at a truck stop and both are designed to plug into a vehicle's power port so we could cook soups/stews/chili/baked potatoes or keep prepared food hot while traveling in our crew cab pick-up truck if we had to do so. We also have a refrigerated cooler that can st on the back seat and can plug into a power port if we want to have cold drinks and fresh salads while traveling for hours without having to buy bags of ice.
For grid-down cooking inside our house, we have two one-burner butane stoves and a supply of butane cylinders so we can boil water and do stove top cooking indoors. We also have a very small rice cooker that can run off the smallest size Jackery solar power bank and we have practiced cooking raw rice and dry beans with it.
We also keep our motor home parked next to our house. Even if its connection to shore power is no longer energized, we could use the onboard diesel generator, the onboard propane tank and the two roof-mounted solar panels and set of large capacity lithium batteries to make the RV kitchen work. This would include the refrigerator/freezer, microwave/convection oven, two burner propane stove top, a countertop ice maker, an electric skillet and a small Keurig coffee maker. And we have practiced boondocking in the RV for a week at a time, so know how to make that RV kitchen work without a connection to shore power. Grid down cooking can be a fun challenge.

This video is excellent. Am new in purchasing stoves. Watched numerous videos and it seems that those people have been doing this for years. This is a lot to take in. Lived through the Great Depression 1929. Then in 8th grade, remember helping Mother doing all kinds of canning. After a few years everyone stopped canning. It was easier buying canned goods. Be careful because the day will come when you will have to protect not only your family but all you have. World War III will totally devastate everything and everybody.

Hello Provident Prepper form our farm in New Hampshire. Having propane back up kitchen equipment is a great idea for the suburban /urban home owner, who is not burning wood. We built our 2016 home on our farm to be both on and off-grid. We have a kitchen wood stove and and an airtight wood stove in the basement. Both will cook food. Our propane summer kitchen range has top burners that will hand light and then there is the gas grill.
At some point I want a large power unit that will charge off electricity and solar. NH loses power to snow storms and high winds at times. We are grateful to be prepared. ~ Diane

I haven't heard of these products before, but I have used canned heat to cook during power outrages. I have a raised trivet for my instant pot that I can fit 3 cans underneath. I set this up on my stovetop and it's sturdy enough to cook with cast iron 😊 It's also much easier to cook on than my fireplace, and allows us to make coffee and meals during summer storms when its too hot to light the fireplace. Thank you for this video!

Good that your recipe had black pepper because turmeric requires black pepper to release its special nutrients at 2000x compared to without pepper.
Last year I got on sale for less than $50 a single burner induction stove hob made by NuWave that lets you set the voltage it draws & doesn’t surge to the highest voltage when you turn it on. It has 600w, 900w, & 1300w. Since I cook on medium or medium low heat at the 600w, it is a very low power draw in my cargo minivan escape pod camper’s solar system or a power station inside. Over this past year I’ve done lots of cooking experiments to be sure I know how it works, including spending more than a week at the beginning of the month out of state caring for a family member’s animals. I make a point of using it everyday for all meals requiring cooking.
PS: this was the experiment I came up with to cook everyday instead of using my SunFlair fold-up solar oven because not enough consistent sun 🌞 to cook, but surprisingly enough to recharge batteries with solar panel on minivan rooftop.

Yup! That’s what I use. For a pot of soup, I bring it up to a boil on my propane burner, let it boil for five or ten minutes, then transfer the pot to a thermal cooker (I have two sizes of Jackery thermal cookers) to finish cooking without burning further fuel.

I really wanted to get a Vesta (maybe I will later) but at the time, I just wanted something I could use inside or out. So I got a little camp stove. Last December, we had a power outage at 3:30 pm, so I got the stove out, and used Sterno with a window cracked. We had yummy soup, and everyone was happy. Yes it took a while to get it good and hot, but I used canned meat and veggies, sonothing had to cook all the way through. I tried it outside with sticks and leaves, but it was a lot harder to use. I'll just stick with my rocket stove!
