*Bought as a gift for my son and his second grade son to use on a Pinewood Derby car. Wanted something relatively safe and able to be packed away when not in use. Worked well. **MyBest.Tools** Easy to use and set up. Case provides good storage.*

I could see how this would be intimidating to some people, but once you have it set up, even for one job at a time, its worth it to knock out all your mortises.

"Finally" .... that's why I bought a dedicated mortiser. I use the drill press far less in woodworking. It's a table top. Thanks for the video, but I would encourage everyone to buy a dedicated machine instead. Cost more, yes, but save your money and get the better choice.

Nope, ya didn't cover my problem like I'd hoped. I get all set up and when I start mortising, somehow the chisel goes out of square and the sides of my mortise end up saw toothed. I readjust and same ole same ole every time. I threw the damned thing in the cabinet and it's been there for years. Another thing you might talk about is the length of throw on the drill press. It'll take a long quill to make a through mortise on a door

That was my thought. He used one end of the fence as a pivot point to align the work piece to the auger, but he never squared up the chisel to the edge.

If you're going to use his approach, you need to use the end of the work piece, assuming it is square to the rest of the piece, to square up the chisel. Back in the video when he's setting the depth of cut, you would loosen the chisel, and press the end of the work piece against it being sure the face of the chisel is flat against the end. That would square the chisel to the work piece preventing the saw tooth effect. Using a real mortising machine, you do the same thing, but against the fence instead. Since the drill press method doesn't have fence that stays on the same alignment, you cant use the fence.

Exactly. Getting the chisel square was entirely omitted in the video. Getting it square is trial and error period and it tedious. Sometimes it is really unnecessary for a joint. Other times it's very necessary.

Great video, the guy is a good teacher too. But I'm going to inject a little negativity here.... this guy is going to lose a fingertip. I'd love to be wrong of course. Again, I like his videos, they are helpful and effective. But DO NOT have a hand on the quill feed and a finger at the cut at the same time. Please!
