Have You Ever Heard of Home Fries?

  • Home Fries is one of those movies that for some reason has become forgotten over the last couple decades, despite having a big star, Drew Barrymore, a famous writer, Vince Gilligan, and a large release, appearing on almost 2000 screens. But it flopped pretty hard in 1998. Becoming one of those mid-budget financial failures that scared studios into only making tent-pole films. And it's a shame, because Home Fries is strange, and funny, and really worth checking out.

Addicted to Love is also a weirdly dark movie to have in that DVD pack lol

It’s a cute movie. I saw this many times when I was in the hospital recovering from a appendicitis

It’s also in the background of the All Star music video!

Good analysis of the movie. I watched the film, less than two years ago, for the first time. It's interesting how it was advertised as a rom-com. So like you, I was totally surprised that it had a dark side to the story. Cool clip of Siskel and Ebert's take on the movie.

Earlier today I listened to a podcast about a major sfx/vfx leader who apparently got his start with a movie called "Home Fries". Never heard of this movie but it has now come up randomly twice in the same day. Weird?

After the movie could the costume have been sold or otherwise put into the inventory of one of those prop rental companies in the LA area (like many props are)? Then maybe they just needed a weird costume, was browsing inventory, it was cheap, and so got rented for the other film?

I think that that is probably the most likely answer. But when I was listening to the Vince Gilligan talking about the Home Fries reference in Breaking Bad, he mentioned that they had to clear the BM logo with Warner Brothers, which makes me wonder if they have a copyright on it. If so, it surprises me that they wouldn’t have stripped off the logo from the costume in Mystery Men. Could just be an oversight.

I haven't seen the top two movies in that 4 pack but i can see why it's paired with Addicted to Love, which is a very weird romcom itself. Personally i love Home Fries. My mother, who i first watched it with, did not. She was very much expecting the geberic romcom the trailers falsly promised.

They just re-used the costume in Mystery Men. The vendor just had it in on hand in storage but never took off the logo. That’s typically what happens when they go from one production to another to keep costs down.

I saw this at the cinema, unfortunately, and was beyond confused and bored. I was 13 and didn't find it cute or romantic. My friend said I wasn't allowed to pick films again. I have to say the acting isn't awful though, the actors really tried to sell it.
