Our family migrated from Bradford England to a Tacony rental home of Henry Diston. They were woolen mill mid-management. We now are owners of Mussehl & Westphal the oldest US musical saw company. Dyson's & Dawson's were the first about 1898. Dad, born back in England, attended Henry Disston School & was hoisted over the fence into Mary Disston School yard upon graduation as was the custom.
That's a cool little piece of history to have in your family ! I recently moved back to Tacony and have been researching some historic spots to place GEOCACHES. I love finding little stories like this along the way !! Did you see the change in Mary Disston School ? They knocked down the back half and only kept the front portion. It is now a charter school. I wish I snagged some of the stone when they knocked it down. Would have totally placed it in my yard !
Wish we did Colleen, but I'm a one fingered typist & there's few of us. I do collect various bits of masonry such as slate roof pcs. bricks etc. from homes, mills & factories of significance to the family & myself as some were stone masons. Archaeology of all kinds is an interest. Keep on digging. Spent time in Tacony visiting as a kid & plan on a visit in the not too distant. Cheers !
Every school in tacony should show this to their students. Very informative. Great presentation. I recall writing the history of disston school and the disston family contributions to the community of tacony as a form of punishment in the accommodation room. I remember some of this though but it should be a lesson in history class not something you get to read/copy if you happen to get in house suspension or detention.
M Sch Local history should be part of the school kids’ lessons. Tacony has a rich and interesting story and I wouldn’t think it would be a punishment. Students should look at it as something to be proud of. I attended Hamilton Disston school and my dad’s family grew up here too.
My family owned and operated Do Do"s pizza in the former Washington Tea House at the corner of Hegerman St. and Unruh Ave.from the mid 1960"s thru 1980.
My family is from Tacony, Wissinoming and Mayfair. We lived on Ditman St. between Knorr and Longshore. Been to the library a few times on Torresdale as a small boy, played at Disston Playground. We watched the Dairy Dan garage burn to the ground in 1969. Our church was Our Lady of Consolation. Several generations of my family attended Mass there and went to school.
@@darkstarr2540 You were neighbors with my grandparents, who lived on the 6300 block of Marsden. Walk out their back door and you're at the Wawa and the McDonald's on Torresdale in 30 seconds.
@@firebird7479 Yeah that's we're the alley way connected to the WaWa. I actually lived between Ditman and Robbins. Two blocks from the Torresdale where the Wawa used to be. Gone now.
@@darkstarr2540 A laundromat. I remember way back when that spot on the corner where the Wawa was had been a BP gas station. The bakery across the street made great jelly donuts. My grandfather was a regular at the bar there on Torresdale and Levick. I loved the drug store on the corner of Robbins and Torresdale. I can still smell the candy section.
@@firebird7479 Damm I forgot all about Sunshine pharmacy! I remember when they closed and the place that took over had a grand opening party and everyone in the neighborhood was there. I vaguely remember the bakery across the street from Wawa, but I remember there being a Westcoast video there. I remember the gas station because me and my friend would go there to fill up our lawnmowers. And my brothers use to hang in that bar all the time. It was called Pearsals originally. It has went through many name changes since, but it's still there last I seen. Do you remember Sylvia's ice cream shop on Robbins and Jackson?
My grandfather was the owner of magees pub (former Philadelphia cop) until his passing in the late 60’s when his son (my uncle) took it over until the 90’s
My son & his wife moved to Tacony from Brooklyn. I was interested to learn about the homes which appeared to be built for industrial workers. I sought out info and found this video. It was extremely helpful and well done. Thank you.
I grew up at Magee and Ditman st. Its such a shame what that neighborhood turned into. And just less than a week ago. The burned down a beautiful church named St.Leo.
This is a fantastic video! I grew up in the NE (Summerdale and Bustleton) and graduated from Judge. I just posted this video on the Facebook group that I run, Philadelphia History and Memories... facebook.com/groups/historicalphilly
Nicely done! I want to mention it’s not a “Native American” name; that would be akin to calling it a “White Man’s” name. We should be specific. The word you reference is a Lenni Lenape name.
Great thing about Tacony was Diston Saw on State Road. He provided cheap housing for his workers and believe to this day a good section if Tacony is prohibited from selling booze. Scum bag old foodarama owner cried for years because they would not give him a liquor license. Place is becoming a getto. Lots of crime & shootings.
I’m watching this on 01-08-2020, i wish there was a time machine. Awesome video.

safe to say, the opposite is happening to the history of many places like tacony. this history is now considered racist and must be erased.
