This did not help: Moto Z 2nd generation has low microphone volume when using USB-C headsets. Have tried many, the USB-C adapter using multiple 3.5mm headsets experience a 5dB drop in microphone volume. The phone's microphone works. But, when using a headsets with microphone, the volume is so low, the MOTO can't recognize most commands. People on the other side of the phone call complain about low volume.

This is a defect on most all Motorola phones. There are two microphones. You have to pull the cover off of the phone exposing the battery. Then you put tape over the top microphone on back of the phone by the camera. Reboot the phone. Furthermore you have to put your mouth right on the bottom MIC for people to hear you clearly. I hope this helps someone. It worked for my Moto E4.
