- Roland talks with a few of the kupuna (grandparents) of Kohala that grew up during the time that the sugar plantations were the dominant industry in Hawaii.
They were only children back then and the stories that they share about growing up during that time are priceless treasures.
Archival footage of life back then adds another dimension as the histories that have been handed down now have visual references.
The lives and experiences of our ancestors are crucial to our history and should be remembered if we expect to retain a connection to our past. - บันเทิง

My grandma grew up in Kohala before moving to Puna. KOAE' was her next home then Kapoho beach lots (now gone😢). She's the PUHI OHANA😊❤
Great video! Mahalo, for putting this documentary together. Looking forward, in watching more of your videos. My grandparents, and parent were from Hawi and Kapaau. My grandfather, was the taylor in Kapaau. Sewake, is our family name.

@@RPacheco808 Many years ago, probably before you were born, my uncle used to know everyone, because he was the postmaster in Hawi. Kaku Sakai. He and his family, used to live next door to the Yamasaki family,who were full time fishermen. Great memories for me as a child.

@@RPacheco808 I believe the interviews were taped in the senior center at Kapa'au? My wife and I stay near Kapa'au every other year. I first visited North Kohala when my brother taught in Waimea in the late 1950s and early 1960s. I read Kindy Sproat's book, "A Storyteller's Story", which contained many of the same type of stories, as well as the large book Kohala Aina. Love that part of the Big Island and really enjoyed your documentary!!
