    Home Depot kit is $60 per step. Yet the floor only cost 3 per sq foot. I was like "there must be a more economical way"? Here I have found the perfect solution! Thanks!

    Great idea! And a very good instructional video 👍👊. I was just thinking of a more efficient way to heat up planks for production.
    I have seen people bending pvc pipe to make 90 degree elbows by putting them in a hot water bath. They would have dozens of short lengths of pipe in a bucket of hot water. Then they would pull them out and bend them, throw them in a cold bucket of water. I think you could do the same thing with some vinyl planks. Might be worth a try.

  • @randywl8925

    Interesting idea.
    Since the stair lips are all going to be the same thickness it would be good to set up a jig with a back stop that you could push your plank against. You would put one shim against the back stop to guide your first route cut and a and put a wider shim in place make your second cut.
    I used the heat gun once to heat the backing of some carpet tiles so they would bend two and a half inches over the edge of an open set of stairs. I found after a few tests and using an infrared thermometer that you can find the ideal temperature at which it will bend by pointing the thermometer at it. Once you have that figured out it will be easy with the infrared thermometer to keep heating until it's at a certain temperature and then you know you're close. You got it figured out pretty well by just watching it then when it slumps over.
    That's a neat idea. I did that once to make base shoe out of a Drop and Done product to wrap around the four outside corners. Drop and Done is made by XL flooring. There's no tongue or groove they just lay in place and fit tightly together with zero expansion.
    I haven't bought a decent router at the time and I use my table saw set at a 45. It took a few tries not to cut all the way through the wire layer or the color layer.
    Anyway cool idea. I never would have thought of doing that for stairs. 👍

    @phillamoore157 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting…. I’m trying to find a solution to match the curve of the bullnose, as opposed to a squared look. I suppose the same rules apply, I would have to remove more material at the spot where the LVP would need to be bent. Good to know that this LVP can be manipulated like that. I guess the smart thing to do is to experiment on a scrap piece to learn the LVP’s tolerance to the heat.

    Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. The finish keeps cracking on the bend, what am I doing wrong? My first V cut was close to the finish, like you showed, it cracked. Maybe I tried to "help" it bend too soon. My second V cut was a bit less close and it cracked, it would bend on it's own after a few minutes, I gently pushed on it with a piece of scrap wood. I'm using cali bamboo lvp. Any advice would be appreciated.

    If you heat the plank from the back only, you can get right up to the groove, or dato, that way you dont have to worry about damaging the wear layer and you can heat it up considerably faster. I personally do it without the dato because it makes for a stronger step, overall. Doing it that way takes a tad bit longer, but I like the integrity of the piece better.

    When you step on the front corner there isn't going to be any support and it will pull up the middle / back of the LVP wont it? Also I have never seen an LVP where when you cut the 45 for the return and butt them together you can still lock in to the long side and the short side. I am using Lifeproof LVP right now and the locks are different between the 2 sides.

      @@FloorsbySouthernboys Can you expand on this technique further? Is there a video I can watch?

      I also would love to see a video on an open ended step and how to finish off the outside edge. I'm trying to complete this week as my floor is scheduled for installation on Monday.

    Why would a router table not work ?

    I just finished building the handrail on my deck th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z and used this great little router to clean up the top rail before the final sanding and stain. It was light weight but packed lots of power. Either size battery didn't seem to make it top heavy and I'm a 64 yr old women so I really appreciated how easy it was to use...................... CORDLESS only way to go !!
