      Yes good point I probably could have focused on that a bit more. I tried to capture some elements of it with the aux percussion and guitar stylings, but admittedly it wasn't as big of a focus as some of the other elements of their music@@sat1241

      @@steventhechameleon I feel like what they do sounds slightly more African although I have only heard some of their stuff and it's not African enough to classify it as African music like "highlife". Supposedly they have some Thai funk influence but again still being an American hybrid not overtly foreign. You made yours very bland (IMO). I don't think theirs is quite so bland, it as a slight edge here and there but is laid back. You did a good job though. Would like to hear another. When playing bass I think you should have dressed as the bassist seemed shy to do the drag. Well I guess it's on to the next.

    Some tips on Laura's bass tone. She isn't actually using a vintage jazz bass. It sure looks like one, but it's actually a cheap Chinese knock-off that Mark got her, by the brand SX. It has the chrome plates which make it look vintage. She also changed the pickups to DiMarzio jazz pickups. She has a foam mute under the strings next to the bridge. She also plays with flatwound strings which helps a lot for that tone as well, and finally she turns up the tone knob all the way, and the body pickup all the way, and the bridge pickup off completely.

    • @Chaziltasm
      @Chaziltasm 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@cristinarmo3303 Well it's a vintage inspired bass, but it is not actually vintage. "Vintage" usually means like, a bass from the 60's or 70's. The SX company started in 1998. Yeah it doesn't exist anymore most likely due to legal reasons of their headstock looking too similar to a Fender design.

    That was really good. Really enjoyed your analysis. I hear a lot of African guitar phrases in the guitar playing For me the most impressive feature of the band is the understated groove of the drumming, it is hypnotic and has great feel. Amazing video! Cool fact about Mark's speer guitar, he uses flatwounds in a strat (very unsual but creative idea) getting rid of the low E string replacing the E string with an A, A with D, D with G, G with B, and two e strings, giving it room for a warm sound but preserving the brightness that's essential for Mark's twangy tone. Also one of his guitar pickups was faulty and that somehow made the tone sound cool.
    He's a creative guitarist!

    • @steventhechameleon
      @steventhechameleon  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah I love the creativity and the way they capitalize on seeming “mistakes”

    • @AfferbeckBeats
      @AfferbeckBeats 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I heard that he and others do that with flats on guitar. But when I put flats on my Strat I wasn't concerned because I'm a bass player, so what do I care about thick strings? I was wrong, the the Daddario Chrome flats are all way too thick and stiff, and the low E especially feels unbelievably fat and also doesn't fit in the nut properly. So I immediately restrung it moving them all down, with the A string on the low E, and put my old high E string back on top. So I definitely recommend copying Mark.

    Fun video. The track is a little to uncanny for me. Good effort (and better than I could do RN). Came close with the guitar, but the bass needs more space. LL is all about classic hip hop/70s baselines. More melodic and it doesn’t feel like she is ever just holding it down. this sounded more like some of their 80s influences at times. Got me inspired to try some new things, tho.

    • @steventhechameleon
      @steventhechameleon  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it's a great point. I think that the general sort of sound I tried to recreate for this one is more in line with their songs with less funky bass lines (think more The Universe Smiles than Mordechai), but still I think it's something I should have brought out more in my song when highlighting what makes them have their signature sound. The bass and flat wounds also affect it so having the exact gear would help with the attack of the notes.
