The finesse funker shows the wide variety of sounds she can get with just five pedals and a wah that never goes off.
Reverb addict Mark Speer and badass bassist Laura Lee met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger before their ultra-hip, sold-out show at Nashville’s Basement East. Speer and Lee took the crew through their non-conventional approach to nuevo-vintage tones.

Wow, this chick and her boyfriend make really cool music, she has a tendency to play the same exact thing for about eight minutes straight during a song. Definitely stoner music
Thanks for featuring Laura Lee. Her band is way ahead and hopefully at the right time. I'm astonished how much I feel wonderful listening to Khruangbin's music and live shows. They play and share some deep feelings and wonderful music.
"i have had the same strings since I bought the bass" amen, lady. Amen.
That's the beauty of flatwounds. They sound better with age
My roundwounds are so old they play like flats. Hope I never break one!
Mine broke and then my new ones broke again after 2 months. Damn my oafish fingers.
Eww
It’s an older video, but it checks out.
Shhhhhh...@@zen7349
I understand that reference lol
@@zen7349 how is knowledge about gear ever a neccesity when you play in a great band, like she does?
Nobody in that band seems to be gear obsessed.
@@versnellingspookieHow is it not? ☮️
I'm happy to see artists that keep on using more affordable gears even after they got big, such as Laura with her SX here. It helps destroy this stigma that you NEED high-end gear if you want to make it big.
Holy crap i've never really heard her playing isolated like this; her tone is fantastic.
Love how her attitude fits the whole Khruangbin aesthetic. Very refreshing interview.
Good on her for sticking with the SX.
Gotta appreciate a gal who knows good SX when she has it! ;)
man i dig her tone. and she seems like she has a great personality.
That is far and away the most upright acoustic bass sounding, electric rig!! Incredible
You know...she's SUPER NICE as a player...her lines are SO melodic! She doesn't go crazy but everything she plays is perfect!
I love how the focus is on looking cool. She’s an entertainer. And she does look super cool.
That part made me like her less
It's just a little extra flare... their unique sound makes them special.
she has the tastiest sense of note placement and rhythym. never too much always just what the song needs.
Very subtle euphemism, thank you.
I love that the whole band's ethos is exploring within the box. And that goes all the way down to the gear they use too!
man this approach is one to live by. keep things simple, make the magic happen on your instrument. she rocking the same SX knockoff she started with, did some clutch upgrade to the pickups and tuning pegs. compressor is a must if you play live and a solid amp. done.
Wig Rundown?
Wonder what they look like without the wigs.
LOL yes!
It’s like the whole KISS makeup mystery. @@tonepilot
@@tedstryker7965 Indeed there are some things that should never be known.
There bald
It's helpful to hear her say the name of the band. I could never be sure.
@5:15
For reals 😂
It means "airplane" in Thai.
Just talked to Matt at Rockin Robin and verified that they are NOT closing. Thank God! 4:39
Those Sx's are great basses!!! That one is the older version, alder body!
Wow, it really does sound like an upright bass
I have the same SX bass. It was about $90 brand new on eBay in the mid-2000s.
I love her playing, great tone and feel, she always plays really good parts that fit the songs perfectly....bravo Laura!
I love the fact that she uses an SX. I've had one exactly the same. I've had a bunch of vintage and recent Fenders afterwards, and this SX sounded much better than a lot of them. It was a cheap bass by all means, but the sound was amazing. So I love it that she just sticks with this, while she probably could have about any bass she wants.
She rules, and love that she's not snobby about an SX bass
Less is more, great rundown…shows that her tone is mainly in the fingers kudos to you
The tone of that bass in the mix is so good!😊
Khruangbin are a trip. Great sound.
It's an older song, but the first thing I heard from them that sold me on her tone was "Maria También" from Con Todo El Mundo. (thanks, KEXP!). Sounds awesome.
Finally an Interview with Laura!!!❤
I’ve been gigging a Bassman Ten for years on bass. Very underrated. Just drop a mic in front of it and let the PA do the heavy lifting. Ultimate in tone and dynamic response.
Laura Lee's playing here made me think of the classic upright bassists, like Ron Carter, Paul Chambers, and, more recently, Christian McBride. So wonderful!
Great interview with Laura Lee. Love Kruangbin. Love how all three of them keep things pretty basic in terms of gear but get so much out of it to make their own unique sound.
It's very rare to see Laura (who played with a pick 12 years ago) with other basses than her SX JB (and the Greco Violin). But you can find some fotos with a Precision Bass and she plays a Fender Bass VI in the "Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - B-Side"-Video.
Had been listening to a lot of Khruangbin lately. Perfect content!
That’s Mark sitting in the booth behind them incognito. His rig rundown is hilarious. Be great to interview Laid Back Country Picker and Honey in an up and coming rig rundown.
Laura Lee is THE BEST in every way
Great interview! Rockin’ Robin here in Houston is not closing, though. I think they’ve been looking for a buyer for a few years-Bart, the owner, would like to retire.
Laura is fucking amazing! I love that she doesn't change her strings, mine are going on 30 years & I dread the day that anything happens.
Love Kruangbin
This just shows that you can be so creative with simple resources…
Today I learned
Flats: Bwoomp
Rounds: Bingy
And great transparent pedal.
I own a SX Telecaster as my only electric guitar, is pretty cool.
Love Laura! Minimalist monstress of bass!
Wait wt? She plays an SX! I effin love it!
Great player, great singer, great band!
She plays super groovy, love her style ❤
Time for an update! She's been sporting a Fender Jazz stack knob in recent posts.
Really cool .....Thanks !!!!!!!!
My minimal bass rig is an Alpha Omicron into a fender 40. That’s all I need these days……have a compressor and a pog but they’re off the board.
Love my SX J-bass! 🔥 👌
Those Bassman 10’s are great guitar amps.
She is so kool !
Yes! Never Change Bass String Users unite! 🤘
Hell yeah. I’m on 16 year old strings on my bass. 😂
I play too hard, I guess. One of mine always eventually breaks 😞
Mine are 8 years old.
@@jamisondonald384You’re breaking flatwounds? Wow, you’re really tearing it up.
@@estebanb7166 I actually don't think I ever broke my flat ones, just the rounds. The flat ones fell prey to a "prank" by a guy that broke the nut of the bass they were on and I haven't had a set since, but your comment makes me think maybe I should go back to them
Oh my gosh she plays an SX bass (what??) and eight year-old strings?? I am done with excuses.
SX do good stuff. Great bases (pun intended) for upgraded P/ups and hardware.
Her tone sounds almost like an electrified Upright, has a little bit of Cleveland Eaton to it
Man, when Laura demonstrates a few sounds.. pfewww..blown away man ...totally blown away.
What gage strings does she use? That tone sounds so good
Best rr all time ❤
shes the coolest
I have the feeling she doesn't care that much about gear, which is cool and I wished I was the same way. I spend too much time looking and buying new gear rather than just playing.
Wow. I still have the parts to an SX guitar that was only $100 ~12 years ago. I bought two and kept the better one. The wood in those guitars could be really crappy, but a good one sounds like any good Fender. The saddles where chrome-plated bass, but it sounded very good and the frets just needed some polishing. The stock Ceramic pickups were even good. The hardware was a bit flimsy, and it has those cheap pots. Upgrading everything would make it pretty nice, but I've invested in guitar parts with better quality woods, and Stainless frets for longevity.
I first heard their tune on Pandora on my Etran De L'Aïr African playlist . Never knew they were Texan until this year. Weirded me out
i had never heard of them before. checked it out and survey says: Rad
I remember seeing SX basses on Talkbass more than a decade back, and they were ridiculously cheap and good. A few mods and you'd have a decent bass.
Ok, we love you. We're in. You don't HAVE to wear the wig all the time!!
Less is always more. Classic jazz tone from the 50's and 60's.
very interesting
SX bass ❤️❤️❤️
Didn't the gear they're showing in this set of Rig Rundown videos get stolen on tour in Europe some time after this was filmed?
It was missing at the airport for a while, but they managed to get everything back.
@@trashmail8Thank goodness! I thought they'd lost it for real.
Interesting ... I've seen a lot of videos where Laura is using an SVT.
Very likely just house equipment.
Backline
Lol . I have an early 90s pbass .bought new..im still playing the same strings lol 😂 no joke..still stay in tune..lol 😅
Music for laptops. 🔥
Laura 'Totally' Leezy!
Same Bass strings for 8 years? Amazing. 6 string guitarists struggle to get to 8 weeks before changing strings.
Can you still do string muting with the ashtray and that metal bridge installed?
Palm muting is impossible but you can shorten notes with fingers on either hand. I never change flatwound strings unless they break, a rare occurrence. I recall reading an old interview with, it might've been bassist Phil Chen, that played on 40 year old strings
Guess you can’t palm mute, but the flat wounds and foam hidden under the ashtray will be getting a short, palm muted sound anyway.
Flatwounds don't even start to really sound good until you've had them for a year or two. Once they are broken in you just keep playing them.
@@fistinair1979 I suppose you can argue that the strings on a piano dont need changing very often - perhaps when the high note strings occasionally break.
Lucky Bass players......
@PetraKann piano strings aren't being touched by gross oily hands though which is what makes round wound strings die eventually. The way flats are made, that oil and dirt doesn't get into the strings and destroy them.
Peanut butter fingers 🤤
i dont know its an old video or she still using the same ring
Leezy is the Best 👏❤
Yeah❤ 🇧🇷 she is
Is this a repost?
HEY JOHN, we need an updated Wayne Krantz and Oz Noy rig rundown
8 year old strings, now I feel a little bit better xP
She said these strings are 8 years old? Interesting. It's especially interesting considering that in Russia, due to the dollar exchange rate, strings are significantly expensive.
Musicians use all sorts of interesting adjectives to describe tone. This is the first time I've heard someone describe their tone as "peanut butter."
I love their unapologetically cheap wigs
He didn’t call it a Spartan Approach?!?😮
My art teacher said the same thing to me “you gotta know the rules before you break the rules”…
They should do another rundown of her outfits
Her legs are a solo act in and of themselves and should go on a world tour.
She sounds JUST like Anna Farris 😭😂
And that kids, is what a bass rig should look like!
ALERT!!! SX is an EXCELLENT make whoever they are! I have a few of their guitars. Rondo music sells them! BTW, carb cleaner will clean the bass strings. OF COURSE protect the neck!
Don't clean bass flatwounds. You earned the tone, don't throw it away!
Seeing her without her high heels on too
She is FUNNY!!!
What about their most important pieces of gear… the wigs?
An SX ffs.... cool
WARNING : you only hear her play at 06:32
Well I am in love. What band is she in?
Khruangbin
What a woman. A magnificent specimen
Creepy when you notice the guy sitting in the background
She has the same strings since she boight it!? Does she not sweat 😂!?
easily the sexiest person to ever play the bass.
What about lemmy
Peanut Butter Sound
Why does this sound like a portlandia scene?
