I pretty much plant container pawpaw trees like I would an apple: dig a hole about twice the size of the container, plant it high (make sure the root flare is slightly above ground level) and water well. No amendments to the soil. Less is more in my opinion! Most people who lose trees kill them with love... Too much fiddling with nature...
Are all of your varieties grafted? I’m in Syracuse (5b) and am planting 7 grafted trees this spring but just read an article about someone in zone 4a having all of his grafted trees failing within a few years of planting them. Now I am nervous about having all grafted varieties.
We have 5 grafted trees and 2 large seedlings, plus a few smaller seedlings. All of the grafted trees are doing amazing! It's year #7 in the ground for the grafted sunflower tree and it's easily 10-12 feet tall and wide. We're in Springville and have some elevation (Zone 5a) so you'll be fine!
Thank you for sharing. You have beautiful paw paw trees. I have a question. I live in East Texas, zone 8b. I've heard that Paw paw needs to be sheltered under shade while they are young. My question is, do I need to shade them? If I do, for how long? I ask because I see your paw paw are in the open. Maybe your summer heat is not as harsh? Again, thank you and thank you in advance.
Thank you! If they are grafted then the branches are already old enough to handle full sun because they were growth from a mature tree. If it's a seedling you can plant somewhere shady or in a garden bed where other plants can shade it. You could also use a tomato cage with shade cloth, if it's in the open. You only need to shade the first year or maybe two, if your summers are intense which they probably are moreso in Texas than here! Easiest way is a tomato cage and shade cloth I would say.
Hi there! Where do u get ur Shanandoah paw paw? U mention that it was the first tree that produced fruits. It said u need more than 1 varieties to produce fruits, is it true? And btw I am from upstate NY.
Hello, and thank you for watching! I purchased the Shenandoah at a pawpaw festival in PA. You do need 2 different varieties for pollination, although the trees seem partially self fertile.
hi! so happy to have found your video! I recently joined the FB group you mentioned and have learned a lot. I have land in zone 5a on the Central/Eastern side of NY. Do you protect young seedlings/trees in the winter? Is mulch and a tomato cage enough or should I do something stronger with chicken wire? I just planted 2 1-foot tall trees along the tree line of my front yard (Wabash and Mango). Should I wait until the spring to plant more or do you plant in the fall? Thank you!!
I planted all of mine, except for the large Sunflower tree, in the fall, so I would do it now. Every tree I tried to save in a pot over the winter ended up freezing and not making it. I never protected young trees in winter, as they are tough as nails, but we get a ton of snow here which acts as a nice insulator for the roots. You could always mulch with some shredded leaves (I use the lawnmower and bag them) which is how I mulch all of our fruit trees. There's no shortage of those right now! Since those trees you planted are grafted, you won't need to worry about the sun, as they are older growth from a larger tree, so you should be OK in that regard. A tomato cage to keep any curious deer or rabbits from nipping a very young tree should be plenty of protection. They won't come back for seconds, but if your tree is very small one little nip could take out the entire graft! I had that happen but then the rootstock sprouted way up and it's 5 feet tall in 1 year! They are truly incredible trees.
This is my first time trying to grow a pawpaw tree. Thank you for the info! Would you recommend to me buying seeds and sewing them right now if I live zone 5 eastern NY?
I would recommend buying a tree online honestly. If you buy seeds this time of year you never know if they will be viable. One Green World, Starks, and Edible Landscaping are great websites!
That said, if you did buy seeds then you can sprout them in potting mix then plant in tall pots until they're little trees. You can also just plant the seeds. I've done all 3 ways and they all work!
@@captiveroots3037 I would call that WNY. There's definitely a difference in weather. I'm in Dansville, I came from Upstate. Thanks for the video I was concerned about WNY winters. I'm going for it! I bought two dry root from Farmerseed.

@@PrisonPlanetRefugee I don't but there is a local farm around here called Paul's Organic Farm that grows a bunch of them. They've been on my list to try someday.
Wow they are really adorable
Yes they are!
New paw paw grower in Chicagoland. They just leafed out from their first winter🤞🙏
Awesome! Ours are way behind this spring due to all the cold nights we've had
Lovely!
I live on the Canadian border of Ontario. I would love to try these! I had no idea they could grow in zone 4?
They should be able to grow there... the tough part would be getting ripe fruit in the shorter growing season. NC1 is a variety from Ontario!

What are paw paws? Very interesting plant.
Pawpaws are the largest native American fruit! We have a bunch of tasting videos on the channel if you want to see the fruit!
