I'm really fluent and can talk out loud to myself when alone and vocab is good, but my confidence is really low and have almost never spoken it in front of anyone.

Maybe time to start paying for private lessons so that you can get some conversation experience.

I am Spanish and thanks to TH-cam I understand English more and better, however, as I rarely speak it, I feel that my brain is like a funnel where I am able to express less and paradoxically understand more. If I go any further, I am writing this message in Spanish and using the online translation because I do not see myself able to articulate a speech in English. Languages are useful tools to make us a vision of the world but also to build our own personality. The mother of my English teacher told her one day: All you need is a bedside table dictionary. And she listened to him and she married a Spaniard

I do sometimes lose my train of thoughts in the middle of a conversation and I find it hard to retrieve the words that I actually wanna say.. Your tips on repetitions and making simple sentences definitely help English learners like me.. Thanks 🙏😊

3 ways to improve this and correct it:
1- Gap fillers: Well, you see, it’s right etc.. are all words that are going to help you find the right path in your mind in order to build the sentence.
2- Series : By watching a lot of series you acquire vocab and see typical questions repeated in our daily lives which leads to you memorizing them and being self-confident.
3- Video games : Meet people online and talk to them, as simple as that. I learnt English almost only by doing this and German as well.
This would be my advices to try to get rid of this

Constant high levels of stress causes the brain to jam or shut down. This can make others think you are stupid or intellectually slow etc, because they process or deal with stress differently or they are for example not HSP people.

  • @lilisdotcom

This video has great information and I'm glad you've done it because not many people speak about this topic. In this world where we are full of "winners" and "losers" there are very few people that recognize something that can be hidden, so... we don't mention it.
In my case, I have had that feeling that you described and it's true that is not only in English, it has happened to me in my mother tongue when I was surrounded by people who I didn't trust much and obviously when I spoke about something I don't speak every day.
I support the Repeat after me method and I also advice reading aloud. Reading has helped me to enlarge my vocabulary not only to understand new words but also to use them more fluently, only if I repeat or read aloud as an exercise (I also do it because I love reading).
Thank you Jade, I'm sorry so long message!

"Audio processing", for me to convert given phrases into picture movie in my head. I used to have:
    1) Failed to listen
    2) Failed to draw the picture
    3) Failed to read the picture in English (lack of vocabulary)
I started learning English after grown up (almost got into middle aged).
I was lucky to have a good teacher who told me my pronunciation first.
Listeners are not be confused when I speak a different word, and that applied me the same way.
It's between Tetris and Karaoke, practice makes you perfect!
    Thank you Jade.

I think It all just comes down to making your passive vocabulary active (separate words, certain structures, phrases, etc.) - that's it, if not wrapped up in terminology. A person who needs a few seconds to fish out the right word or conversational pattern every time he's asked a question just simply don't have enough experience with pronouncing them out loud. This video reminded me of one of our Russian simultaneous interpretation teacher, he once said that an interpreter shouldn't by any means think during interpretation (from Russian to English) because if he'd become an interpreter in the first place, he must've spoken millions of words and patterns millions of times, he has to come up with what to say next on the fly, off the top of his head, it doesn't require any thinking.
I think this relatively simple attitude towards fluency should be applied to learning English in general too.

    • @JadeJoddle

I partially agree. But bear in mind that people have different talents, and therefore language ability and mental quickness plays a part . Not everybody can be a translator.

I've noticed that many "scripted" phrases which easily stick in my mind come from songs, poetry, TV series (not films) or even video games. But only if they are short, kind of "It is I, Leclerc". I routinely can use something from the Critical Drinker or Cyberpunk 2077 dialogues, but never - from Lindybeige or Jordan Peterson. The latter is a special case - his sentences are overwhelmingly long, complicated by multiple negative forms and even brackets. Eg "He does not understand that if his mind negates the obvious (or at least ignores or degrades to the minimum), he would face serious obstacles ... and on and on..."

Your earlier videos from a few years back seem to show you speaking using a broader degree of mouth mobility: your mouth when needed and called for opens up more. Quite differently, more recent videos show you almost making an effort to maintain a narrow mouth opening. Is this part of your journey to change your accent?

Sorry to but in! Maybe I'm just slightly x-mas tipsy and got this video all wrong then sorry again.
But what I can say from my own experiences (I'm Swedish buy the way) is that you can't speak another language sort of properly if you don't think in it (I'm still totally shite at spelling though :)).
If you have to translate what he/she is saying in to your own language and then translate the answer back your basically f... :)
Well, it works, but not that good. :)
