These are great tips. I used to do really fancy stone work, very creative inlays. My boss told me once "maybe stone isnt your medium" not because I'm bad just because I had asked questions about stone and tile limitations that led her to say that... which felt terrible to hear at the time but here I am 5 years later completely into wood sculpting. Creative freedom is so important! I also have been grinding on sketching ideas out.. i see so much improvement from that in both the drawings and sculptures.

I started power carving, then I picked up a decent set of gouges and knives. Now I love to use the gouges and knives. Seems to be more relaxing and satisfying. Whittling has captured attention as of late. I've been watching your videos and see you are enjoying doing the the same! One day, I hope to be as good as Doug!!

@@scottscreativecarvings yea I dont have any chisels or gouges yet. I'd love one decent one to put scale patterns on my sculptures but they're so $$. I've used em a bunch though. The tapping sound is phenomenal. I'll pay the shipping, someone send me a gouge they dont use and I'll use the hell outta it! Lol

Like your workstations they’re really interesting, as I’ve a spinal injury and have made and tried all sorts of different carving stations although I’ve not tried anything analogous to those. I’m always space constrained!

Indeed, my perception of my first two years of hobby woodworking was that I'd achieved nothing because I didn't finish a single piece to an acceptable standard, and that perception was very frustrating. When I then analysed how I was using my time it was almost exclusively reconditioning old tools, every woodwork project turned into 'but first I need restore and sharpen the relevant tools'. I also harboured a secret guilt that I actually preferred restoring tools to using them... so I changed my hobby to restoring tools and felt far more productive doing exactly the same things. Eventually I reached a point where I had collected a well maintained and honed set of all of the main tools that I needed, at which point I gave woodwork another try. It was a totally different experience, my tools were transformed from uncooperative obstacles into familiar supportive friends, using the tools became a tactile pleasure, and the quality of my work improved beyond all recognition. So yes, they are different hobbies, but they have a wonderful synergy and harmony. Happy times! :)
