Yes, You would need to excite the winding from an external source and spin the rotor a little faster than its synchronous speed. Then it would have an induction generator.
Ed, what about finding some 3 phase generator and hook it to one of your diesel engines ?. In that way you can get 3 phase power bettar than the VFD. Nice comp, I missed HVAC vids.
Great video. Im a motor rewind engineer, you can see just by looking at that winding its a 2 pole (each coil goes half way around the stator) , from the looks of it its a 24 slot with 10-12 coil pitch, 6x2 groups,12 coils total. There would be two groups per phase. If not that then its a special! Ive not wound many with alu wire, you really can tell the difference in weight once the motor is stripped though. Could your special ingredient be iron filings? :)
when you say "water chiller" I think "water cooler" like you find in offices for getting a drink of water haha that would be overkill for that application! I love watching things work like that, especially when you slow it down, just fascinating. the more moving parts the better :D gotta get me a VFD!
Dude, very cool. Dad was a Friggie and quite often had old compressors sitting around. The domes are usually tuned and make a workshop bell, kinda like a the old telephone extension ringer. 15:55 to 16:07 is true geek porn. Thanks for posting :-)
I have an idea, if you still have it in one piece.....Start it up as fast as you can get it, & suck up blowtorch gas & ignite it on the outlet, just like Mr. Photon did! :D See if you can get pops, bangs, and some backfiring going on. LMAO! Thanxx for showing, -BoomBoxDeluxe.
480v motor fed with a 240 VFD will stay cool. I have a drill press in that configuration. Ran it for 6 hours one day at about 2600 RPM. Motor stayed happy. I'll upload a video. Thanks for sharing.
Never seen a three piston hermetic before! Great stuff! I've got a huge Bristol comp that i'm planning to cut open, i wonder if its a radial as its nearly as round as its tall.
Fuck im gonna miss this...gday folks...he was the aussie big clive...go easy Ed

Hi Ed, when you said "the movement's mesmerizing" I thought it resembled an old triple-expansion steam engine. Like you said, it is mesmerizing too.
more than likely a radial, I have seen 4 and 6 cylinder Bristol radials
just want to say you're awesome and I've learned so much from watching your videos, thank you for taking the time to do them for us.
yer that kirby compressor was tough should do another one like that!!!

Love the DEW

What you're doing as you mention you was a rewind engineer 5 years back from today.
the plug you are using I believe is a universal type and the pin and plug color dictate the type and voltage range
I am using a Variable Frequency Drive - VFD for short, they are all over ebay for cheap too
I've always wondered what was inside these compressors, but never opened one up. Thanks Ed!
Peeking through the crank case at the mesmerisingly slow pistons and oil sound was incredibly erotic.
good stuff.. we are both on the subject of compressors i see ;-)
That'd make a good (but inefficient) sound generator for an old arcade racing game! Vroom! XD
if you turn it in a 2 stroke and leave the elecric motor there you could make a generator, right?
You should over rev it and blow the rods!! Is it possible to convert one to a gas engine? I'd love a odd 3 cylinder on my gokart. haha.
They're usually pretty good.
well done.

how do you control the speed of that ac motor on the compressor
Love the compressor vids, like your early vids, fun times!!

"Involving non-newtonian fluid and something else."
Experiment involves motor stators, so I'm guessing iron filings.

it sounds cool
What is the capacity off your VFTD lie to do similar running test
20:59 sounds like a diesel
hypnotic to watch the crank,id love a gas engine that size for a small mc built that way
The compressor when it started up almost sounded exactly like the Skype notification that immediately preceded it! Lol

was looking at a vr5 for my justy wish they still made a 4 cylinder
It sounds pretty cool!
You should make one of them rev at their max! Make em break!
Do you watch the EEVblog? :)
I'll burn up the stator when I am done with it :D
I was thinking three cylinder two stroke
do a teardown video of an LG linear compressor
M2 in the background at 8:28?
VFD ? why don't use a inverter
THAT IS AWESKOME
That would make a great baby engine!
They' re the same thing
YA BOGAN
lol compressor porn ;p
Motor Porn:-))
