- Today we are going to take a look at the new BOSS RC-500 MIDI Features! In this video I will show you how to setup midi sync on a BOSS RC-500 Loop Station! We will take a look at the RC-500 MIDI DAW Sync Settings. This will allow you to sync your BOSS RC-500 to a Digital Audio Workstation, in this tutorial I will use Ableton Live 10. However, this is possible with Logic Pro X and other Music Production Software!

Thanks for sharing this video. This was really what I was looking for. Coincidentally, you use the same stuff that I use. A Gibson SG, Boss RC-500, Komplete Audio 6. I just bought a midi cable from Boss. It works perfectly with Reaper. I use it as a DAW.
Question: If I use a midi keyboard plugged into the Boss rc 500 and play my synth from the logic library can I loop these sounds at the same time?
Basically can I use the boss rc 500 as a interface for my midi keyboard and am I still able to loop it?

Hey Ben, I hope you’re well! Thanks for the videos as always. Is there a way to do this but with the connections reversed? Ie, so I can tap tempo or use stop/start from the pedal and that changes my tempo in logic?

Hey man! Can you connect the Rc-500 to Logic Pro X so that you can loop your digital instruments with your MIDI Keyboard let's say? Additionally, can you connect your Mic so you can add live compression and tuning when performing?

I want to sync my RC 500 to my BeatBuddy drum pedal, running the RC as the master, but having no luck, although it works fine with the RC 300. Advice on the settings?
Is it possible to do a midi setup as follows...
Midi foot switch -> RC500 -> rack fx
And be able to use the midi foot switch to control both the rc500 and the rack fx(behringer fx2000) ?
Thanks for sharing your videos. I now have two RC-500s. I already owned an RC-500. After seeing your videos, I decided to buy another RC-500. I've connected them now. I'd like them both to use the same pace. But the MIDI Sync doesn't work quite right. I don't use DAW to sync the MIDI, is that necessary or not? I hope you can help me or someone else. My question as well. Can’t seem to get the RC 500 to talk to the BeatBuddy, but BB syncs to the RC 300 just fine. Made up my own cables as the Boss cables take 2 months to get in NZ, but videos showed the connections for type A, which I followed. Getting frustrated, as the RC 500 is the right size for my pedal board , but want to use the BB for drums.
Did you try different time signatures besides 4/4? I have been experiencing some issues. Somehow I have a feeling that Rc500 sync related also to the selected time signature (particularly if quantization is ON). Some gear like the BeatBuddy sends out time signature information but the Rc500 ignores this information. I contacted Boss support and the reply in sum was it was sent as a request to R&D.
The tempo sync parameter for each Rc500 track was a great tip, I didn't know that, and I will try immediately. Thanks
Ben, or anyone else. Is there a way to split overdubs to individual tracks on logic? Is there a way to also transport drum tracks over to PC?
Very good info again, Ben, thank you! I wonder if you can help with a question. I have tried connecting Harley Benton MP-100 (which is identical to the MeloAudio MIDI Commander) to my new RC-500 but I have found that I need to press a footswitch once to start playback and then press it a second time before I can then press it a third time to stop playback. I think that the first press on the footswitch sends a value of 127 to start playback, and then I need to press a second time to return the value to 0 before I can press a third time to send 127 again and stop playback. Am I correct in assuming that this is what's happening? I can set the RC-500 to accept momentary MIDI commands but I can't set the MP-100 to send momentary MIDI commands, by the way, I can only set commands on the MP-100 to toggle ON or OFF.
Do you know of a MIDI footswitch that I can use to control the RC-500 without having to make these extra footswitch presses?
The RC-500 is a great piece of kit, for the reasons you point out in your videos. And it is ten times better if you add external footswitches.

Hi, I'm quite dumb about this stuff but I have an electronic drumkit with a midi out, is it possible to run it directly into the boss RC-500 to loop drums, and if so would it use the RC-500's drum sounds or its native ones?

HI Ben et al, Great vids. Inspired me to get the RC500 so thanks for that. You mention in the vid that you can use USB straight from the RC500 into the computer to record to Ableton. Happy New Year James! I was referring to transferring MIDI Data Across the USB Cable. The RC-500 unfortunately doesn’t have audio interface capabilities via USB. Like other BOSS Loop Stations.

Hi Ben Thanks for the great video. I have audio interface but it doesnt have midi connection unfortunately. So i cant use rc 500 with usb connect to take sounds in to Rc 500 from Ableton did i understand right?
@@ardaozturk218 you can! I'm doing it with my Samsung cable. Just go into setting and instead of midi do USB.

I use mine like this, with the Digitakt in charge.

@@seekersystems Yes, it is super simple. On the Digitakt enable Send Sync and Transport. Then on the RC-500, enable Auto source sync in the MIDI settings. Let me know of that helps.
The rc-500 plays silent measures after the first loop then starts the loop again. I have the tempo sync off and am syncing to Ableton. Does anyone have a fix for this. I have tried so many different options.
Man I wish you would go through the rest of the settings. I'm trying to get two rc-500s to to midi sync one another. Please make a video of this, I have two of them and no matter how I tweak the setting I cannot get them to behave the way I want. Please. PLEASE make a video going over this thoroughly
I've got an issue where my RC-500 doesn't let me turn off tempo sync for my tracks. I think this is why my loops sounds warped when using it with Ableton. Anyone know why this might be?

Anyone aware of a way to lock the tempo of the RC-500 to whole numbers?
I’m using midi out from the RC into my GT-1000 Core to sync the timing of my delay and other fx but the GT only handles whole numbers and sounds really wonky if you give it a decimal tempo. Basically the delay times keep bouncing back and forth between the nearest whole numbers and thus pitch shifting 🤦
Will any TRS to MIDI cable work or does it (for some reason) really have to be a Boss TRS to MIDI?
Any will work, provided they are the same pins as the Boss one - search Boss compatible to be sure. I got one one on eBay and it works fine. More than I can say for the actual MIDI sync, but that's another story...
Can you make a similar setup with a Boss RC-5?

I recon the RC500, I take it you mean the RC10r not 30r. Its good but not as easy to perform with as the RC500.

I've followed these steps as well as other videos and tried and tried and TRIED and for the life of me I cannot get Logic Pro to sync its tempo to my RC 500. Beyond frustrated. Anyone else have sync issues?

My Tempo clock is set up on "MIDI", like in the vid.
When i edit my track 1 or 2, the Tempo Sync option is stuck on the "ON" position.

I had to plug my midi cable out and THEN turn my tempo sync off.
Then plug my midi cable in again, and then jackpot !

You didn't show if tempo sync worked with transport sync.

...yes man it does,If you have a DAW.(Digital Audio Workststion) There are several free ones available for use to record,I personally use Cakewalk myself,as it has EVERY FEATURE I need,an online community and facebook group for support and question asking,and is TOTALLY FREE and always will be! Reaper is another one that's free.There's a bit of a learning curve with these things,but If I can do it,anyone can...lol.Hope this helps ya.Stay safe...

Nobody needs a pay for a “course” with the vast amount of resources available.
So there's a HUGE issue though. Loop sync keeps it in time by warping but sounds awful. Unfortunately, when you turn this off the looper still can be in-time but what it does is waits. So I always get a loop of silence then the loop then silence and so on. In order to get the loop playing like it should you have to punch in and out at the exact right moments (like exact millisecond) which is impossible. I see your workaround is to have to the loop length fixed so you don't have to punch out. Also sometimes if you dont punch in right it does the same thing. Nevertheless all of this is really unfortunate and makes it very limiting and requires setup. I'll keep trying because I love the pedal but DAW syncing looks like it may not be so promising. 😥
A few other notes. I'm trying auto which I think stops it at each measure which works better but I still get a pause sometimes. Also of course you can turn off loop sync which stops the pause but now it isn't in sync with anything.

Having the same issue here. It’s so flaky with the switch timing when you have it on ‘auto’ measure. Sometimes it works fine when you hit the pedal say, one half beat before you want to start, and one half beat after you stop, and it loops ok. Then sometimes you’ll do exactly the same thing and it will leave a half bar or bar gap, or even cut the last part of the loop off. I’d say all in all, it’s pretty bad for syncing to MIDI. I hoped that updating the firmware to the latest might help, but it didn’t.
Proprietary accessories that you have to buy separately after spending $300+ on the unit. Scumbags.
