    Very helpful. I'm using an Rc 30 now, and though im a novice, i was already frustrated with having the same segment/phrase length across tracks. -- and starting at the next segment at the end is huge. I will now be able to use my dual fs pedal and really make things happen. Thank you. You're a good teacher

    After 2 days of research and trial and error just completed a four part loop on my new Boss 500.
    Thank you for all the work you do with your videos - there is no way I could have worked it out from the manual.
    A four part song was probably not the best choice of starting point but it was hugely interesting to do and gave me a good overview of what it can do. What an amazing piece of kit! I did find that as my track 1 was a different number of measures than track 2 I had to turn of track 2 loop sync in order to get it to play from the start of the loop every time. However in order to get a good in time recording I had to have loop sync on. God knows what other knobs and buttons I have also twiddled with... I used the memory option rather than system so that I could set pedal three as memory up on memory one and down on memory two - I only had a single ctrl pedal which I used as rhythm stop/start. Memory one is Intro Verse and Two is Outro/Bridge Chorus.
    This is a link to the song with camera on the floor - but not very clear; sorry.
    th-cam.com/video/DdKz6Tv8ubs/w-d-xo.html
    I am only an enthusiastic amateur not a musician so the levels and arrangement are a bit iffy but it worked!
    Thanks again for a great channel.

I didnt realize that you could seamlessly go between memories and have it play in time. • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey 👋
      Thanks 🙏
      So to answer your question.. no but there is another way round it.
      You just have to think in a different way.
      Create a template. So on memory 1 leave it blank but set it up how you want it. Then when inspiration strikes and you wanna get something down and save it, you write to memory.. but not memory 1. Just change it to the memory you want to save it on and hey presto! That’s save (let’s say on memory 20) and then when you go back to memory 1 it’s setup the way you like it, ready to go and take your next inspiring track.
      Hope that makes sense and helps you.
      Thanks against please share my videos out. Want to reach more people! 👍🏻

    Great video, as usual. I have tried your technique and love it, but I would like to know how to set this up for a live impromptu environment. The problem is you have to prerecord the tracks when switching memories. Any thoughts?

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah it’s down to which looper.
      Unfortunately you are right, you would have to be pre-recorded with the RC-500 unless it’s a physical bend down and press save.
      There are 1/2 loopers out there that will auto save but they are few and far between.
      Working on another idea for this. Stay tuned.

    • @lgovantes1
      @lgovantes1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @JohnPaulMusicUK I am all ears! My goal is to smoothly transition memories and enter new in record mode to lay down a new loop as if I was transitioning into chorus or a different part of a song.

    This is an excellent video, but it's crazy how much of a workaround is required to get it to function like this. There seem to be two ways to do verse/chorus: (1) Turning Loop Sync OFF and then just switching between T1 and T2 in single mode (we'll call that the "Ben Rowlands" method); or (2) Programming either two or four different parts by switching between Memories ("JohnPaul method"). The JohnPaul method has a lot of advantages, including being able to designate a different rhythm with chorus, which you can't do just by switching tracks on one memory.
    However, there's more work behind the scenes (I think) than what he shows. There's a lot of little things, such as making sure the rhythm is set to trigger on the memory switch. Also, it's not clear to me if the JohnPaul method still has the limitations about each track needing to be the same length, or a multiple of that length. That was an issue with the Ben Rowlands single-memory approach because if the rhythm could get out of sync when the track lengths didn't match up. I'll have to experiment with both.
    I also think that while I'm inclined to like JohnPaul's approach better (in part because it's similar to how I used to use a DigiTech Jamman Solo XT), this would be more for creating full backing tracks versus live play. I think it would be pretty difficult to record all of those parts within the flow of playing a song (and in the case of the intro and bridge, probably wouldn't make sense at all). But it's an interesting option for playing whole songs and, as he said, you can just save these settings to two of your 99 presets, so you aren't married to one approach or the other.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a very interesting comment and love the different approaches.
      Yeah there is a lot more work for my one but it’s just to show what’s possible with one looper. Of course if you wanted this much in one track, then you would go for an RC-600 with 6 tracks or something like an Aeros Looper. But the whole point of the video was to bring in a comment like this.. to show the limitations are actually not there. With the right workflow.. you can get away with quite a lot. Thank you for this comment. Love it 👍🏻

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK

      Hey 👋
      Yeah if you look closely on the pedal at the back you need a stereo cable to control both (TRS) where a normal jack / guitar cable (TS) is mono. That was it can use both signals to control both pedals. Hope that helps. 👍🏻 😊

    Most other loopers with control jacks can switch between memory slots.
    The advantage here is the two tracks. Two situations without stepping memory.
    So I assume if you had more than two of them like mentioned 10, 11, 12, 13 you'd just step a few times in advance to jump from, say 10 to 13 and then back to 11. I'm not sure if this like so but should be obvious..

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s correct.. the trick with this is to do it before number 10 ends so it can cue it up seamlessly. 👍🏻

    Watched a couple of your cips lately. I'm new to loopers and purchased a RC-5. From your videos I've experienced the advantage to control RC-5 functions from both a Foot switch and a MIDI Controler so my plan is to purchase those. I really would like to prepare for playing through a song with parts as in this video - like an Intro, Verse and Chorus. Trying out that as a first test on the RC-5 worked, but only if I record the full song in one memory. It's doable but you really have to be tight i tempo and be prepared to delete and re-play the full song on overdubs. What you obtain here is somehow what I aim for. To be able to start one Memory and without interuption then play the next. Like let one button (let's say on the MIDI Controler) to go next or previous Memory-slop and start playing it directly. Guess it would be very hard to stay in tempo if you have to do this in two steps (one press to change Memry and one after to start playing). Is this possible or would I have to buy a RC-500 to even have the possibility to do that? Thank's for your useful tips so far :)

    1. Can you chain even more parts in linear song mode? E.g. Chorus 1, chorus 2 (variation), verse 1, verse 2 (variation) etc.

    Thank you for the informative video. I just want to say that it is not to be used in live performance condition since you can’t save your memory after laying down the Intro/Verse tracks. So when you go to the memory (chorus/bridge), you will loose all recordings. So in order for this to work you have to pre-record your performance on both memories, save them and bring them to the gig and play over them. That kind of defeat the purpose of live performance. Cheers!

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! 👋
      Yes, you are right but what you can do is have a basic track laid down like a beat and a bass line, then you can loop over the top.
      Yes it is more like a backing track for this reason and a bit more work at home prepping it but for a bigger sound or to have multiple parts with just a 2 track looper, this is a good option.
      When I can finally get back to playing in pubs and clubs and playing the bigger, dance/disco covers, I will be using this option when using the RC-500 cause it will help get people on the dance floor and save time creating the loops.

      @@JohnPaulMusicUK yes indeed!
      These days, I find myself gravitating more toward the RC10 as I find it better suited for live performance. Especially the inability of the RC500 to have two independent loops in length and still able to sync with the drums very annoying. True the RC10 has its own limitations, particularly with the way how drums intros and endings are inconveniently set and the lack of flexibility in customization. Like U2 said:” I still haven’t found what I’m looking for...” in loopers.

      Ya, I found the same thing out when I was setting this up. It's unfortunate that you can't save either when sound is playing. I did a clever trick though for the memory switching where my track select button on memory 1 is up and then on memory 2 the track select button is memory down. So one button that toggle between two memories without an external switch. Also for the timing with the drums if you stop tracks then play the drums start with the loop. Which is an unconventional workaround. But if you are able to if works perfectly. It would be super cool if boss could add something where when you press the second tack is stops then play all in milliseconds resetting the tempo to match up. This would be the ultimate fix! Also great video.

    For Instance.............. I change the pedal 1 function to "Start All" in one memory, write it to that memory, but it changes all the other memories to that same pedal 1 function.

      Hey Vince.
      So out of the box, the RC-500 is designed to be the same pedals. No matter what memory you are in. This is the default but you can change this so it’s ‘per loop/memory’.
      Press the MENU button, then scroll to ‘Preference’ there you can control PDL1, PDL2 & PDL3 Preferences.
      By default it’s per system. Just change it to per memory. Nice 👍🏻

    How can you do this if you are live looping with nothing pre-recorded? The "save" process would require bending down and performing like three different actions on the "intro/verse" before switching up to "bridge/chorus." And then you would have to do the same to go back don one preset.

    Massive thing I'm not understanding about the looper. I'm trying to record a loop on track 1, then switch to track 2, and do a dub over, and I'd like that second track I recorded to start playing immediately at the beginning of the phrase of track one - as if I were overdubbing on track 1. It doesn't seem to matter if I've put t1 or t2 loop.s on, or not, or auto/free measure - nothing seems to work.
    If you could shed some light on this, that would be a massive help! Thank you!

I’m not very good and the start of my loops sound naff cause I can’t start playing and hit the record button at the same time very well. I’d like to be able to hit the record button and then have a count in, or if I’m overdubbing to start recording on the next first measure. Of course, I will accept any “get good” suggestions, but any advice would be immeasurably appreciated!

      Hey 👋
      So I have a little trick for you which might help.
      Start the rhythm and then hit record but don’t play anything. Record however many bars you need for that section and make sure they are blank.
      Then stop everything, give it a name and save it.
      Now when you come to it, you already have the amount of bars you need and all you need to do is start all and then you can overdub on the silent track in time to your hearts content.
      This is a great way to practice your timing without panicking about button pressing at the same time.
      Hope that helps?

      Morning from the UK Rob.
      Okay.. so the best advice I could give would be grab an FS-6 or FS-7 pedal.
      You can program that up to do a few different things.
      So you have a choice. You could use one of the buttons on the RC-500 and change it to be a tap tempo.
      Or you could use that on an external pedal.
      Additionally you can use an external like FS-6/7 to control memory up and down and yes, this will happen seamlessly whilst playing if you want to.
      Alternatively if you want even more control then you can get a midi pedal with more buttons and program it up.
      This makes a HUGE difference and can really help.

I'll try to keep this brief: I've got fs7 & rc500...first 2 pedals are setup independently r,p,s,c..3rd is rhythm p,s...what I'm trying to do is loop the chorus of a song & start & stop it without stopping the drum tracks I've created...AND be able to tap tempo the grooves as presetting the tempos doesn't work for different songs..I'm using 6-7 grooves to cover my song list....I tried setting rhythm to off on 2nd switch which allows me to start & stop first track..but then only way to stop rhythm is w on/off button....the fs7 is dedicated memory up/down so that I can access different groove presets live...seem to paint myself into a corner no matter what I do...closest thing has been to set(if I remember!) 3rd switch as cur s,t...& then bank up to clear second track without 2 sec delay...I simply want to record a chorus segment & start & stop it without affecting the drum pattern....I need a switch to record a chorus, a switch to start & stop that track without stopping the drums..& a switch to tap tempo?....there isn't a track pause? Hope this is making sense? Even tried first 2 buttons as indy loopers so when I switch it silences each track..but if I try to say, clear 2nd track while first one is playing it stops the whole loop! Be great if you could erase one track while other was playing WITHOUT stopping the drums? Whew! Anyway, lmk if you know of any way to achieve my live needs....or we can take design mod ideas to Roland! In a live setting its like a real band; if the groove stops your dead in the water

      This is true but the advantage of using a looper is if you have the song in loops or parts, you can embellish on top.
      Let’s say you have chorus as one part.. you could record harmonies live on stage and it just has that live, in the moment element that is unique.
      Of course if you are playing the whole thing from start to finish as one take, then yes it no different than playback.

      This is common and don’t worry.
      With the FS7 it’s set or memory and not systematic. Imagine you have just used it to go up (or down) a memory. Well, now it’s a whole new memory and the FS7 doesn’t have the same function on this memory as it did on the last one. The great news is you can make it systematic. Head on over to Menu> Setup>Preference and here you can change the the CTL1 & CTL2 from memory to system. (Remember to save that) and now, just go back and pick it to be mem up and mem down again. Save that and you’re sorted.

      So when you change memories and you have the guitar tracks recorded on each memory the next one stops? That sounds strange. Do you have audio recorded on both (each memory). The RC-500 will only play between memories if there is something there to play. If there isn’t any audio, the trick is to record a blank track for however many bar lengths you need. Then as you switch, it should be seamless.

      That might be a memory setting you have on memory 1. Check the settings.

    Must the internal rhythm machine be in use to be able to have a memory automatically play when selected? My set up: Button configuration = factory + CTRL 1 and 2 assigned to external switch for up and down; Tracks set to Single/End of loop. Scenario: I've got an ABC song and am looping my own hand percussion recorded on the RC-500. Memory 1, track 1 = Verse; Memory 1, track 2 = chorus; Memory 2, Track 1 (or 2) = bridge. Problem = When I select mem 2 while mem 1 is playing, it doesn't automatically play after mem 1 gets to the end. I have to punch play dead-on the down beat to make a seamless transition between Chorus to Bridge.
    I don't have this problem with another ABC song. The only difference in set up is that I use the internal rhythm machine. Thanks in advance for whatever advice you can give.

      Ohhh interesting 🤔
      Have you had a look at the time signature as well as the bpm?
      Is it a 4/4 beat or is it more than 4 bars?

    • @cmcg5788

      @@JohnPaulMusicUK I've got Loop Sync OFF; Tempo Sync ON.The song is in 4/4 (I assume the unit defaults to 4/4, I haven't checked) and the number of bars varies: Verse: 2 bars; Chorus: 8 bars; Bridge 8 Bars. I did mess around a bit more and turned Loop Sync ON, but had to adjust the tempos, which had somehow slowed down from when I recorded them yesterday (on one the tunes, which was recorded at 76 bpm and worked fine at that tempo yesterday, the tempo was slowed down in half [slow and glitchy, like Giant Honour experienced below]-->I had to set it manually to 152 today, and then it was fine---???). Anyway, I had to set the tempo button to get them to what the originals were recorded at, but couldn't use loop sync because i have varied track lengths. Sooo...I turned Loop Sync back off but now had the tempo settings written to the memories in question. and...now it works! I don't really know why though. Does one have to manually assign the tempo for each track/memory?
      On another note, when going up and down between Mems 1 & 2, it goes to track 2 (since I originally go from Chorus [track 2] to Bridge [Track 2]) like you pointed out. I discovered that, if I then make the extra step to select track one and then arm it (selecting play) before the bridge is done playing, it will switch to Track 1, Mem 1 (verse) like I want it to.
      Anyway, this has all been by finding valuable info from folks such as yourself (Thank you so much!) and basic trial and error. I don't know if there is a more "standard"/easier way to set this up, but at least I can get it to do what I want for song structures with the default pedal assignments (except CTRLs 1 & 2, as mentioned).

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow.. what a journey you are having?!
      So firstly, No you shouldn’t have to set them for every time. As long as the time signature (which btw the default is 4/4) is set then the BPM is set from the first loop.
      I’m gonna try and re-create your problem and see what I can do to generate it a faster way.
      I don’t know why by turning loop sync on and then off it now works?! Mental!
      But thank you for the kind words and I’m just happy your song works.

      I've had a similar problem (described in my post above). What worked for me was manually setting the tempo and writing it to memory. Once that was done, it has stayed at the specified tempos. (Although I have no clue why, when I recorded one at 76 bpm yesterday [without specifying the tempo] that I had to set it to 152 bpm today to get it to play at the correct tempo- we'll see what happens tomorrow:>) It is frustrating to not know how to avoid this. Maybe the key is in specifying a tempo as soon as it's recorded.

      Press “Edit” on both tracks and scroll to “Tempo”. You can then set Tempo to OFF before you record anything. Then once you have saved you should be able to switch on and off without the glitch

      Thank you for the reply. The problem is that I have Orange Rocker 32, a stereo combo, and if I connect it at the end of my chain and not the fx loop it will not be stereo.
      My amp have send and two returns, besides the regular in front of the amp input. The question is why the rc500 doesnt record the signal it receivesfrom the DD200 which connected to fx loop in stereo and works perfectly. Same was with RC30, so I just don't get what is wrong here.

    how can I have two independent loops with different measure.....but in time with drum rythms

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, so you can put the RC-500 in 'single' mode where button 1 is loop 1 and button 2 is loop 2 and they can be different lengths with the drums still going.
      if you want different time signatures, the only way around that would be to go up and down two memories but would be difficult to save on the fly.

      Apologies- I thought that’s what you meant.. as in a derivative of the original (2,4,8,16 etc)
