    It’s testament to John that he can carry on with this video after damaging his car like that.
    Just to give some perspective, I got a 2 mm x 4 mm chip in the edge of my door (my wife opened the door on another car) which spoiled an otherwise excellent weekend. This bloke has my utmost admiration

    Oh John mate!! As you say roll with the punches - a good panel man will have that dent out no doubt as I'm sure you can get behind?
    Copybook filter change - much the same as I did at the time I did the Adamesh upgrade to ease access but missed your best practice of loosening the tubing clamp...a good addition!
    You are a man of integrity and generous in your sharing John to show this warts and all but as you know we often learn more from mistakes than a smooth job!? All the best Dave

    John, thank you for the detailed walk-through on the filter, and very sorry about your mishap. I did something rather similar with the hood (bonnet) on my pickup truck, had it open while moving it about and caught it on the raised garage door, broke the pot metal nameplate in two. I've tried various methods to repair it and none have lasted. Very frustrating when a vehicle part that has lasted so many years (since 1987 in my case) unscathed is damaged due to a momentary lapse.

    Ouch on the dent John, you handled the crunch with true style. Must say like everyone else that I have been there. Really appreciate the DIY video John, you present all the right information. My new filter has been waiting for the time and courage to get into this important swap. I also like that you inspected the original filter paper for evidence of its use. All good across the pond. Keep them coming John, I learn a lot every time (fuse box so helpful). Best, Mark

      The fuel filter on my '98 coupe was a bit of a swine to get out. The exhaust was standard up to the location of the fuel filter, so couldn't undo the heat shield without taking the exhaust off, not something I wanted to try with the car only up on jacks! I had to resort to bending the shield a bit. The Adamesh bits are further back, so at least I now know what's fitted! The other thing is that it had been waxoyled generously, including all over the filter, such a filthy job that drew blood and took hours. Still, the car isn't rusty and I dread to think how long it had been on there! Commiserations on the boot lid btw, we've all done things like that in the past!

    Hi John,
    As usual, a very helpful video from you. I will be definitly be changing my fuel filter. Thank you for that! So sorry that you damaged your boot. I know how you feel. In Jan 2021, I decided to crawl under my XKR and tighten some of the 18 tiny bolts holding the oil pan on, as I noticed I had a small leak in that area. Well, my attempt to DIY fixing the leak myself turned into a disaster. I over tightened a couple of them and broke the bolt heads right off. I ended up bringing the car into the shop and many dollars later they fixed my small leak. It happens. I still think DIYing is the best way to go. Thanks again for the video.
    Lou

    Thanks again John. Another pearl of wisdom! I've just recently got my 97 XK8 convertible and I'm slowly going through a whole bunch of stuff to get it back to a well running car. I hadn't considered the fuel filter, so that's now on my list of tasks. Fortunately, I do have a hoist, so no scrambling around on a cold concrete floor. Just an observation on how "crusty" British cars get underneath. As a Brit now living in Australia, I certainly don't miss all the salt and grime that finds its way into wheel wlls and causes all the corrosion and havoc. My car looks almost new underneath compared to that Lincolnshire underside. Hopefully a skillful paintless dent removal bod can fix your boot lid as if it never happened.

    Nice video John - bar the lifting incident of course. That's a horrible feeling that I can relate to very well.
    I have a similar story of repair then causing damage! - whilst changing my front upper shock mounts and trying to extract a shock absorber, I was following a method an American mechanic guy used in his video on here, that was mistake number one!
    My car is 2004.5 XKR in Platinum Silver, setup for the UK market and right-hand drive as per here in New Zealand too, so parts were located differently from the US market within that area behind the guard hidden by that plastic inner wheel well cover, (this is partially why I damaged my car I think as I thought I had more room to move which was actually wrong!), I was moving the shock absorber around to try and get her out up and over the lower wishbone. Let's say I tried a little too hard and banged the bottom of the shock outwards and struck the interior of the unprotected guard twice! I caused a small fingertip sized dent that protrudes outwards but the worst one was it also split the paint to form a small star shape (spider web pattern).
    The shock mounts were a great success and I celebrated that huge achievement ( I have a really bad back 24/7 pain Morphine Fentanyl etc every single damn day so a 'big' job like this was a big deal to get done by myself!) but alas now I have two nasty small dents and cracked paint to show for it. I swore my head off I can tell you as I didn't even notice the damage I had caused till I had finished the shock mount replacement.
    I've had the car just over 4 years now - she's like a beautiful woman, perfect leather and interior can't be faulted, some may laugh but I have only driven her in the rain less than 10 times I suppose as I wanted to do my best to keep her pristine and rust-free. I have another car as my daily driver.
    My XKR was somewhat of an investment I guess, well of course right, plus I like 400hp behind my foot on tap. The only chance to use that I find in general driving is when you leave an intersection entering a motorway - 0-60mph is a pleasure for 5 seconds LOL.
    Wish I had my old Mk1 Cortina lol I'd be better off selling that now...OMG even MKiii Cortinas 50K LOL
    You may recall my black vinyl wrapping (in your community page there is a photo of my car) I have removed that black vinyl from the outer wheel rims now - bonnet stripe is also about to be removed but wife actually likes that to my surprise - these were just an idea to personalise her and be different, time to go back to stock and I will be selling her soon probably.
    Her paint is beautiful sadly no longer. She has travelled around 156,000 km or 96,000 Miles. I'll be letting her go for around 32,000 NZD or 16,500 GBP. Does that price sound fair in your market?
    Real Estate Photography is my game (and yeah I wanted to enter your calendar comp but guess who didn't get off his A...s to take some photos lol.)
    Sorry for the novel - I can ramble too easily sometimes...it's like 10.30 Sat morning here, Winter is close...and your weather will be getting warmer! Bugger!
    Cheers for now 👍

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for taking the time to share so eloquently Trevor. Certainly dont apologise. If I didn't like a good ramble then there would be NO videos🤣.
      Sorry to hear you will be moving the silver lady on, but real life has a way of changing ones priorities. I really liked the black graphics, but equally I agree that for selling her to a new owner, the original look is the right way to go. The price would seem about right in the UK market so I assume will be OK in NZ.
      If you still had the Mk1 cortina you could sell that and get 3 more XK8's🤣
      Will you be replacing her with another 'heart car'? or will the fleet remain diminished?

    Sorry about the dink I also feel your pain.
    I recently completed a full nut and bolt, strip down of the rear end and replaced all the bush and bearings . Just a word of advice to anyone having a go at this make sure you do not use a mains powered inspection lamp anywhere near the filter when doing this .I did and thought it was far enough away but the fuel from the filter splashed and ignited onto my arm and the car caught fire and was lost together with a spell in A&E .So make sure any mains powered light is well away from the car or use a battery powered light.Don’t feel too bad about the boot lid I did exactly the same thing with my 2006 xj8 jacking it up with a trolley jack with the boot lid up and the up and over garage door open which it struck.I had only had the car 2days so I wasn’t very happy!

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David. Totally agree and I dont recommend the use of mains powered inspection lights at all, and personally would no longer use one with any form of power lead either. Rechargeable tech is now good enough and cheap enough that there is no good argument for a corded portable light source.
      So sorry to hear that you were hurt. But hopefully yours is a cautionary tail that will prevent someone else from enduring similar personal and property loss.

    The dent is a real pain. I did something similar with a trailer on my Amarok a couple of months ago. I got it removed by a guy who was recommended to me by a local car restorers. It was £120 but he used no filler and was able to push the original metal and paint back out. No matter how hard I look, I cannot see the slightest trace of bent metal.

    Hi, I love your videos, which are seriously informative. I also have an XK8 2000 Model. and I'm finding it virtually impossible to source the simplest of parts for the vehicle here in Ireland. Would you have any information as to where I can source parts? Asking the main Jaguar dealer here isn't at all helpful, especially when the answer is always ..that is obsolete, or they give you a price that is so high, just to make you go away. Actually your filter was pretty clean all things considered. Much better than mine with all that black sh!t it had! That really sucks about the trunk lid!!!! I always have to watch with mine, my garage door openers come close to the rear and if the hood is open I can stuff it into the ceiling without any trouble. So far have learned to be careful of them - especially after what I went through to paint it last year!

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Andork. Yes Black fuel sounds interesting. If the X100 had rubber fuel lines then I would have guessed they were degrading. But as they are plastic, the only two things that jump to mind is
      a)someone added some tank sealant to stop a leak. (very unlikely as our tanks are inboard and rarely leak)
      b) you car picked up some VERY old or contaminated fuel at some point in the past

At least the filter change was a good result and nicely explained - as always.

    For me, very topical, as I have just bought a new fuel filter for mine. AND, I hope, the correct tool to remove my filter (4.2l). Like Jussi, I also felt your pain. The fact that, at some time, we all do similar stupid things does not make it any easier to stomach.

      Ive had a chat with a couple of PDR folk and they think its too severe as its on a tight curve and therefore too stiff for their techniques. So its looking like its going to be expensive😔. Possibly a boot lid respray. And as Aquamarine mica was dropped after 18 months for being too hard to match (high level of Pearl effect) Im a bit scared😬

    BOOT DAMAGE : I did see your boot door open when you were lifting the car and thought "oh no". I only notice as I damaged the boot door on a hire car in a municipal car park. I wasn't familiar with the car. Sat into it with the boot open, and started the car. For some reason, the suspension went up a few centimetres, and I thought "what's that horrible metal scrapping sound ?" ... and there was the boot lit scrapping along the rough concrete on the beam above it. DOH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Changed mine a year or 2 ago. '04 had about 65K on it and I'm betting it was the original. Got all this black crap running out of it ... yeah, it was full of black gas! No idea what exactly it was or what caused it (normally you get a rust color) but I should probably change it again. Nevertheless, car has always run just fine. It's not in the worst place, a lift certainly makes the job easier, but you'd think these high paid engineers could find easier ways to mount normal serviceable items like these.

    I can't get the front nut off on my filter. I've tried WD40, Plusgas, a flared spanner, crows foot spanner. It's now starting to round off. If I cut the nut off. Does anyone know is it there an olive at the end of the pipe or is it something that's welded? Also, does anyone know where I could source a nut if this is possible. The only other alternative is to cut the pipe, but I can't seem to find a 10mm splice kit and the pipe isn't available as a spare.

      Could be the evaporator solenoid. Do you get a relay like clicking from the left hand front wheel arch when she is idling? if so that could be the cause.
