Fun fact, in French Canadian tradition, the version of The Wild Hunt is called "La Chasse-galerie", and it involves a flying canoe, lumberjacks, rum, a deep snowbank, and possibly the most dedicated booty call of all time. Seriously. I'm not even joking.
Devils jobs are to punish sinners. They may hate God, but they do not love Man. They are, if not the cops, then the executioners. So, expect them to speak harshly to any rule breakers. They're not kidding. They have a license to damn.
One of my class used to sing a French song about the knights of the round table, after arriving at the decision that they needed to check the quality of the wine. The song moves into a verse of every knights increasingly drunker escapes, ending with them concluding that the wine is good But they ougth to taste another barrel, just to be sure.
This sounds very much like a Christianized story of the fae, with "Friar" substituted for whatever "pagan" figure it originally was, and the Devil replacing a fae. If you look at the events, there was a fair exchange at first of fae-wine/fae-mead for the pick of the hunt. The "Devil" didn't take all of the game, either. Just the best ones. If the friar figure has let it go as a done deal, I doubt anything bad would have happened; and from similar stories of the fae, he just might have found himself in an equable deal for their wine/mead for some of his hunting take.
It is. However, the christianized version tends to focus more on the character flaws of the friar than the specific situation between him and the devil. Like a lot of christianized stories, the moral is more about the dangers of excess, as well as not looking out for others.
What kindled this flame of wrath that burns within me...? ...No. It doesn't matter why it burns, what matters is that I am the ripping and tearing tempest that will bring about their ruin.
Very cool! I just realized that Fallout 4 made a reference to this story with an apparently random character named Dando, dressed as a Priest and he is accompanied by very high-level dogs. Never thought much about it, but that can't be a coincidence!
@keegandecker4080 The British comedian Bill Bailey once noted that if you go to almost any other city in Europe on a Saturday night, the only people still out and drinking at 2 a.m. are usually the British tourists.
i want to hear you do the Japanese version, the Hyakki Yako, thousand demon parade. its when the yokai all go out together to dance and party across the countryside. and yokai can get pretty damn destructive. so you can be sure it was a rager. Japanese mythical beasts can get pretty bizzare, which is why I fell in love with them when I was introduced to them as a teenager.
WHERE ARE YOU, DEAR CATHY? RESENTING ME STILL, FROM WHENCE I SHALL NEVER REACH? YOU ARE BESIDE ME, ARE YOU NOT? NOT UNDER ME--BUT WITH ME, UPON THIS VERY EARTH!!! YES, CATHY... TORMENT ME. SO THAT I MAY NEVER REST UNTIL MY VERY LAST BREATH!
This might just be the origin story of "(Ghost) riders in the sky", about the most country music song ive ever heard. Could just be a coincidence, but the resounding vocals and lyrics of the song (at least the versions ive heard) are really quite stunning and emotionally engaging. Interesting how stories could change, from devils appearing in the sky to cowboys on an infinite hellish ride after the ghostly cattle.
Not from what I heard. "Riders in the Sky" is said to be based on an alleged incident involving a cattle drive that was stampede over a cliff. I don't know any song based on the Wild Hunt
I never heard this version of the Wild Hunt. In the tellings I know, it's Odin just going on a hunt with his folks. If you insult the hunt, you'll fare badly; if you show deference, it'll be alright.
As the riders loped on by him He heard one call his name 'If you wanna save your soul From hell a-riding on our range Then, cowboy, change your ways today Or with us you will ride Trying to catch the devil's herd Across these endless skies
holy gods, it's really impressive to think of Friar Dando, who had chosen such an exaggerated life, it was a lifestyle that was already unacceptable for a farmer or a noble, but for a friar it was the least that ended up like that. it's really good here, the famous saying "better alone than in bad company". or in Dando's case "better alone, than infernal company" (if Friar Dando's fate was already sealed when he drank the "drink" of the mysterious horseman, arguing because the "foreigner" had made him "pay" for the drink, I would actually say "from bad to worse", perhaps he just anticipated " the one-way flight")
I agree! many of these stories and myths are not very famous or well known. some have morals that perhaps we should remember. (in this story it is: "be careful of mysterious surprises", and "Don't make excessive demands")
In mythology Dando's activities are greedy and disrespectful, whereas in upperclass British society it's called The Right of The Hunt. Where's The Devil when you need him?
Honestly, the first thing that this made me think of, even though I'm not much of a music person, is Ghost Riders in the Sky. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a connection.
This reminded me of Star Wars' wild squadron. Once year on life day a army of phantoms in straighter go throughout the galaxy to abduct unsuspecting victims. You can find it in A Star Wars comic book.
I have family who swear they have witnessed the hunt. And wisely did not leave their threshold that night. It’s easy to be complacent in our modernity, but something is out in the woods. Something you should NOT follow.
This further proof that dogs are too good for us humans. Even though the master priest was clearly a giant asshole, his loyal dogs still chased after him to try to save him.
You can make the legend of the Trenazo a incident that happened in Tehuacan, 1991 a train was going fast to return to the station and by an curved rail it fell into the ground
1) There are a lot of hands stories and concepts like this. It doesn't mean they are made to represent the same figures. 2) The Devil, aka "The Accuser," like most uses of demons in contemporary art, represents the destrictive aspects of the friars' personality as a stand-in for the destruction we're all capable of wether it's our self or others. It only makes sense that the friars lack awareness regarding those around leads to his downfall.

Seriously. I'm not even joking.
I always found it weird that the devil told them not to take the lord's name in vain. You'd think he'd support that kind of blasphemy.
Ok, share?

No doubt. Christians love to turn neutral spirits into evil demons.
The story of the Wild Hunt preceding Christianity seems very likely indeed.
It is. However, the christianized version tends to focus more on the character flaws of the friar than the specific situation between him and the devil. Like a lot of christianized stories, the moral is more about the dangers of excess, as well as not looking out for others.

The Wild Hunt has been said to be commanded by several historical and mythological figures. Among them being: King Arthur, Odin, and Francis Drake.

Unusual to hear of the Devil west of the Tamar, normally he'd steer clear of Cornwall for fear of a Bal Maiden turning him into Pasty filling!
Ok, to be fair. An group of englishmen finishing their drink before midday is pretty accurate😆🍻🕛
😂😂😂
Here in Vermont, hunters with dogs ignoring boundaries and causing damage are a plague. We could use the wild hunt

Great episode!!
Go read the books! It’s really cool to see everything that The Witcher 3 is based off of (and to get a sense of what the show could have been like)

As someone who plays Witcher, I can confirm they piss me off.
Glad to see the compulsory Witcher reference when talking about the wild hunt.

2:05 - I know this is a version of a myth, but... Cornfields? in Europe? at the turn of the 14th century? 🤔
In much of Europe, including Britain, corn is a term used for any sort of grain, not specifically maize, which it means in North America.
@@racoonofcancun9105 huh... That checks out. TIL :)
