    And then Orpheus fell into a deep depression that provoked some nymphs into killing him for being so emo; At which point he was united in death with Eurydice by Hades. Because the moral is, even if death seems merciless, it eventually reunites everyone, just ya know, not on *your* terms.

      From the version I read, they were Maenads. Orpheus's severed head was then thrown by the nymphs to a stream where his head manager to utter "Eyrydike". The gods were not cool with the murder of Orpheus, so they cursed the Maenads by turning them into trees.

    I like Neil Gaiman's take on it. The when he left the halls of Hades everyone there started to laugh, Orpheus was haunted by the echos of this laugher and took it personally. What if they were laughing at him, that there was nobody behind him and it was all a joke on his expense. Most stories have him turn back only steps before reaching the light so sure he was tricked only to find... he wasn't. And that was the cruelest thing of all, Hades had honored his part, Orpheus was the one that didn't.

    • @pyrock0227
      @pyrock0227 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      this is closer to the version I remember being taught, that Orpheus was expecting a catch or trick from Hades (as pretty much every myth included a lesson on being wary of making deals with the gods), so when he began his silent climb back out of the underworld he let his doubt eat away at him until he was convinced he was being made a fool of, until he turned back right before the finish, finding the real trick had been Orpheus's own expectation of treachery, as Eurydice faded away.

    • @Panda_Roll
      @Panda_Roll ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@pyrock0227 I remember that version from school as well. The part that stuck in my head was the footsteps, he couldn't hear her footsteps behind him forgetting that she was specter at the time so it ate at him until he finally gave in and turned.

    I'll say, in honest, that Hades is one of the most fair and kindest Gods. Literally Persephone was his only sin and even then there are multiple sources that state Persephone was all for it by the end. But in terms of helping Heroes, Hades was actually one of the biggest bros despite his reputation. In fact, he had to add the condition, because he was essentially helping Orpheus break the laws. In reality, if he was like Zeus or Poseidon, it would've been MUCH, MUCH worse.

    • @thegoodwillseventyseven

      If anything Persephone was less a kidnapping and more an arranged marriage. Hades went about it properly for the traditions of the time, it was Zeus as Persephone's father that bungled it up because he was too much of a wuss to talk to Persephone's mom like an adult.

      Archaeological evidence indicates that Hades was likely created as a replacement for the original Poseidon of Mnoic mythology. Persephone has always been the queen of the underworld and in most ancient spells usually when you make a supplication, you ask for her, not Hades. Even in the few representations that exist of Hades in panels, Persephone is always represented in the foreground and Hades always appears in the background. Curious that in the animation they lined them up in more or less the same way.

  • @joinmarch76
    @joinmarch76 ปีที่แล้ว +227

    5:17 I'm gonna have to speak in Hades' defense here because:
    1. It was technically more of an arranged marriage. Not much better, but it wasn't really a kidnapping per se.
    2. And getting away from that admittedly pedantic point, it was all Zeus' idea anyway. Zeus was a douchebag in the days of Ancient Greece.
    3. And most importantly, Hades realized he made a mistake and, pomegranate seeds notwithstanding, he DID do right by Persephone and let her go back to see her mom again on realizing what Demeter was doing.
    4. His dad DID eat him, Demeter, Hestia, Hera, and Poseidon when they were babies. If it weren't for Zeus and Metis, they'd still be in there and possibly even dead today.
    In fact, Hades and Persephone's relationship, while not always the most romantic in the traditional sense, is probably the most functional in all of the Greek pantheon!

    Eurydice, dying now a second time, uttered no complaint against her husband. What was there to complain of, but that she had been loved?”
    And:
    Perhaps he makes a choice. He chooses the memory of her. That’s why he turns. He doesn’t make the lover’s choice, but the poet’s.

    The myth of Orpheus is definitely a great story. It shows that there’s always a price for everything. Orpheus thought he could waltz into Hades’ realm and defy him in order to get his beloved Eurydice back. Unfortunately, though, he didn’t know that the Lord of the Underworld is a clever god and is always prepared. He gave Orpheus the condition to not to look at Eurydice until they exited the Underworld knowing he would be tempted to do so. And he was right.
    Great job, guys! 😎👍🏻

    I have to disagree with some of the characterization here. Orpheus didn't enter the underworld because he was a celebrity with a bloated ego who thought he could get whatever he wanted; he went in because he didn't care if he lived or died. He didn't expect Hades to just grant his request. Orpheus literally entered the realm of death because life without Eurydice was unbearable. There's a lot more pathos to the story than is shown. If you want to see a really excellent adaptation, read Neil Gaiman's Song of Orpheus. That's the real deal right there.

    I love this story, because it says everything about the one telling it. Its three stories depending on the teller.
    Your processing a great loss? Walking away without one last look at her? Impossible. Joining her in the underworld might reunite you, but it doesn't save her.
    Deeply in love? Joining her in the underworld is the romantics choice. Romio and Juliet. To loose that love twice and carry on seems like madness.
    Not in love or loss? Its a story about carefree huberus... Prides rise and the fall.

She sacrificed herself for her husband, and when Heracles heard this, he wrestled with Thanatos, and then convinced Persephone to let her go back to life. She actually DID come back, she just couldn’t talk for 3 days, as she’d been dead 3 days.

    Orphism was a mystery cult in ancient Greece and ancient Rome. They were vegetarians due to their explicit belief in cycles of reincarnation. Wider Greek faiths may have believed in reincarnation too, it's not entirely clear but the Pythagorean and Orphic cults certainly did but the Orphics explicitly avoided killing animals as a result. They also had singificant overlap with the DIonysians as seen by the involvement of returning from death, sparagmos in the story and the focus on theater. Orpheus was not a god to the Orphics but they may have seen him as a mortal extension of Dionysian principles. They were very focused on symbolic rites, poetry and music and also seem to have had a reputation for being very vocally righteous and moralistic. They also seem to have had some degree of crossover with the cult of Demeter and Persephone, a cult which boasted the longest recorded observance of a religious ceremony and was likely one of the oldest organised religions in the history of the world when it finally fizzled out in the 5th century CE.

    Tbf one version of the myth *_does_* see Orpheus attempt to appeal to Aïdoneus' humanity; Ovid in his _Metamorphoses_ recounts how Orpheus, standing b4 the dread king of the shades and his queen, sang of how Love even has power down here in Erebos, the two having been united in love, no doubt imploring Hades to empathize with him in his' greiving his wife's absence.

    Euridice actually died by falling into a den of vipers while fleeing from a satyr who wanted to... R-Word her as he was overcome with lust looking at her.
    Hades is the nicest of the three brothers. He never interferes with the lives of mortals, unlike his other relatives who cause most of Greek legends. Hades always keeps his end of deals as he is the most honorable of the Gods.
    Hades never did anything after he let Orpheus lead Euridice to the World of the Living, the only thing that made Orpheus turn to look back was his own paranoia and distrust in Hades. Hades set out the rules to bring her back, but Orpheus failed to follow through all the way cause at the last second he turned to look at her. Hades had full intent on letting Euridice rejoin the World of the Living, but he couldn't just break the rules of nature but had to set requirements for Orpheus to earn her return.

    • @Gildedmuse
      @Gildedmuse ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some version of Greek Myths said Hades could see all human fates, in which case he knew that Orpheus would look and condemned Euridices back to the land of the dead. So, like all things with these stories, it does depend on which version of the myths you were told.

    • @twistedtachyon5877
      @twistedtachyon5877 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GildedmuseI'd argue those aren't mutually exclusive. In that paradigm, Hades set generous terms and stood by them, secure in the knowledge that Orpheus would doom himself in exactly that situation. By letting it play out that way, Hades upholds his rules but shows compassion in that it *should* have been possible for Orpheus to get Eurydice back if only he could have trusted Hades. It left him above reproach, and Orpheus conceded his loss after that.
