As others have said, this is an Indian made fake. But OK as a decorative piece. You should place the tone arm on the opposite side of the record, by the way!
Even though this is definitely a fake gramophone, it does look to have some quality components in it. The motor could be out of a decent HMV portable, and the tonearm looks to be from a portable too. I have the base unit from a much more modern similar fake. Mine looks much the same, but all the parts are recently made, including the motor and the quality is noticeably inferior
I was a bit hesitant to point out that this gramophone is a fake made in India. They are taking parts of old gramophones and putting them in this box plus a new funnel to make it look older than it is. A friend of mine had bought an exact duplicate of this model and was very disappointed to find it was a fake. You can see that it has been made up of different parts because of the HMV badge and the Columbia speed indicator (different company). Still, great work.
@@andreashale1482 Yes, I think it would be a great disappointment to buy one of these and then find out it was a fake. Since my previous comment I have found another complete one which has a genuine Garrard motor, but not sure if any of the other components are genuine. Most of it is definitely fake. These fakes also tend to play poorly as they don't have decent soundboxes or tracking. I have tested quite a few different sounboxes on my channel and have a couple of the usual fake ones, and plan to test and dismantle these at some point.
As you mentioned, my friends fake sounded absolutely dreadful, whereas my HMV portable has an amazing sound and an incredible volume. I am in complete awe at those people, that could produce such sound just with purely mechanical means.

Good work and nice looking player. Really decorative and I would not mind having one buy never play any recirds newer than 1930 they are not ment to be played on steel needles. Wasn't a problem back then because record shops were in every corner and costed 15 cents.
With all due respect but if you know how a Gramophono works, if you check your video, you will realize that you have just spoiled your Disk since I put the needle on the wrong side causing your disk to scratch. the needle is placed from the center to the right side not from the center to the left side because by the inclination of the needle instead of just caressing the disc and following the engraving on the acetate and catching the undulations made, you just put the needle in the opposite direction causing the tip instead of stroking the acetate to scratch and deform the engraving. Not everyone is a restorer, that is clear to me. To buy a new disc and the parts that are damaged or broken are replaced in a restoration or a restoration is really done in which the pieces remain functional.
That was amazing job, the only thing that I wasn't very sure that I like it was the wooden body, it need more car to hide the years pass on it, I know you did a fine job for the all parts and I loved it, the wood body needs more work, or, maybe use a modern Ideas like using a cars paints with any color you want, nice job my friend.

@@louiseringsmose Hi louise, you would need a completely different arm to make that work. The speed would also need to be adjusted with some modification of the mechanism (not easy I think). Lastly, you will need electronic amplification of the sound of an LP. Hence you'll need an amp and speakers. No way around it I'm afraid. The best way to achieve it is to modify a record player to look a bit like a gramophone. Greetings from Belgium
@@kurtjakins6396 yeah. I've been repairing and restoring phonographs for years, but because of these fake ones, people have the misconception that they sound bad. They can actually sound incredibly good.
It's a good thing it was a repro. He screwed up any kind of antique value it had as soon as he removed the patina and refinished the case..... And he keeps using needle nose pliers on everything. USE PROPER TOOLS TO 'RESTORE'
@@Hofsan well as a phonograph restorer, patina doesnt really add to much value, as patina adds value when it's the main source of identification of age, such as with jewelry. But with phonographs, there are many other ways in which you can identify its authenticity. While original finish is desired, if something is refinished properly and accurately, it can still retain a lot of its value.
Great Restoration! But! The sound box with needle is suppose to play from the right side not left. Pluss, It's for 78 RPM records not vinyl microgroove records.
I would caution that in practice, it's not necessary to disassemble the motor as far as was done here. Just disassemble enough to thoroughly clean and lubricate the mechanism. Plus, I liked the patina on the horn before it was scrubbed off.
Why why why did you strip it?? It ruined the finish and made the value drop over half Other than that great job Enjoyed your video and gave it a Thumbs Up
Yeah I agree , when you stripped it it should have been completely done , could still see paint in the grooves and looked tacky ( so sorry ) , in this case you are not meant to see the wood underneath and if you do it has to be uniform and spotless , just my opinion. Oh and a store bought metal cleaner would work wonders on the horn .
Good morning. I'm not a specialist, but I think you did a good job with the mechanical part of this machine. On the other hand, I'm sorry to say, the wooden crate is downright missed. No one at the time would have spent a lot of money, because it cost a lot, in something like that. The wood should be either waxed or varnished. Leaving the wood like that is a good mistake. You have to make up and redo the cash register. Also for the copper part you have to make it sparkling. That's how it was back then. When you do a restoration the goal is to make it as it was when it was made. The drawing of the wood should be covered with paint and varnished. I hope my comment did not offend you because that was not my intention.
This is a fake made in India in recent years. You will find dozens of them for sale on eBay for around 80 to 120 pounds. You can also find them being bought for hundreds of pounds from unscrupulous people who sell them as original. They are made by taking the workings from a defunct Gramophone and building a new case around them. The angle of the winding handle on this one indicates that this motor came from a portable. Without that angle there would not be enough height on a portable to clear the surface the machine is sat on. Gramophones did not have brass horns. The manufacturers quickly realised that brass on a Gramophone horn just made it sound tinny. Cheaper machines had tin plated steel, more expensive machines wood. Unfortunately these fakes are so common now that people believe the authentic sound should be tinny. Keep the motor out of this one and bin the rest of it. Buy yourself a real one.
great detailed Restauration/repair I like it! the only sad thing is the gramophone is a fake, not the usual India fake but one probably from Afghanistan India fakes have fake motors as well very bad repro's of the Garrard no 20 motor. this one has an original motor of the type HMV used to make and use in the portable models 87 and 88 however this is a USSR Russian copy of such a motor from the 1940s to 60s thus I came to the conclusion that this is an afghani machine. as Crap-O-Phones go this is a better one the soundbox is real the motor is real so the sound will be very much better than the usual India crapo, eh, that is, if you place the tone-arm on the opposite side of the record and use a 78rpm record. also visit my channel to learn more about the wonderful world of antique gramophones/phonographs.
This is what is commonly called a Frankenphone, a gramophone made up of a mixture of original and new parts. The horn, horn support and possibly the tone arm are original, the motor is from an HMV portable, probably a model 101, 102 or similar. the soundbox looks like a 5A and would have been a good one at one time but the diaphragm has been ruined. The case is brand new and probably made in India, I'm surprised you got it to work at all.
Since the resonator is positioned on the left hand side, and not on the right, I'm guessing that plumbing is not one of this fellow's strong points but I like to think he did his very best.
Absurd spectacle of errors. I have restored many actual Victrolas, and I believe that you should leave such things to skilled people who know how they should actually be played, at least.
Unfortunately the whole machine is a reproduction, most likely made in India in recent years, the reason the winding handle points up is because the motor is taken from a portable gramophone, the rest of the parts are of modern production and unfortunately not meant to play records very well

While original finish is desired, if something is refinished properly and accurately, it can still retain a lot of its value.
Great Restoration! But! The sound box with needle is suppose to play from the right side not left. Pluss, It's for 78 RPM records not vinyl microgroove records.
Outstanding job mate!!
Thank you :)
I would caution that in practice, it's not necessary to disassemble the motor as far as was done here. Just disassemble enough to thoroughly clean and lubricate the mechanism. Plus, I liked the patina on the horn before it was scrubbed off.
Thank you very much for your comments.
Excellent job here. Don't know why, but I was expecting that at the end you played "One more kiss dear" by Don Percival.
Thank you very much, sir 😊😊

At least the reproduction ones use a cheap brass horn so we can all immediately tell they aren't genuine His Masters Voice
Why why why did you strip it?? It ruined the finish and made the value drop over half Other than that great job
Enjoyed your video and gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, you are right. It actually looked nice, but it had brown paint inside. That's why I stripped it.
@@Restomaniac just get rid of the brown paint?
@@DaleDix
And, I wanted to see the wood
@@Restomaniac I would have only striped that then. Live and learn :)
My favorite video bro
Kalim Pasha Thank you very much 😊
Great Work sir !!
Thank you very much.
I have a big old one on these music players but when I put the needle down it slows down and stops... how do I fix this?
There must be a problem in the mechanism that reduces torque. It may be necessary to clean and re-lubricate.
Hello there. Sorry for my late reply. Thank you very much for all your comments. Happy new year :)
Thank you very much for your enlightening information and comments.
Perfect restorration 👍
Thank you very much :)
great detailed Restauration/repair I like it!
the only sad thing is the gramophone is a fake, not the usual India fake but one probably from Afghanistan India fakes have fake motors as well very bad repro's of the Garrard no 20 motor.
this one has an original motor of the type HMV used to make and use in the portable models 87 and 88 however this is a USSR Russian copy of such a motor from the 1940s to 60s thus I came to the conclusion that this is an afghani machine.
as Crap-O-Phones go this is a better one the soundbox is real the motor is real so the sound will be very much better than the usual India crapo, eh, that is, if you place the tone-arm on the opposite side of the record and use a 78rpm record.

It looks like the needle is on the wrong side of the spindle.
Yes or the platter is turning the wrong way. It's just carving a new groove?

This is what is commonly called a Frankenphone, a gramophone made up of a mixture of original and new parts. The horn, horn support and possibly the tone arm are original, the motor is from an HMV portable, probably a model 101, 102 or similar. the soundbox looks like a 5A and would have been a good one at one time but the diaphragm has been ruined. The case is brand new and probably made in India, I'm surprised you got it to work at all.
Thank you for your comments, sir.
Since the resonator is positioned on the left hand side, and not on the right, I'm guessing that plumbing is not one of this fellow's strong points but I like to think he did his very best.
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks a lot for your comments.
the needle should go in the direction of travel, and not vice versa you cut the plate so
Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, you are right.
Absurd spectacle of errors. I have restored many actual Victrolas, and I believe that you should leave such things to skilled people who know how they should actually be played, at least.
Thank you for your comment.

You may want to shoot with your camera set to progressive video. Gets rid of the combing effect.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, you are right. Especially the white background increases the combing effect.
NEVER EVER use a normal record on a gramophon. That is a sacrilege. Only schellac has to be used on a gramophon. Specially if it is so well restored.
benerabilis Thank you for your comment. Yes you are right. Also record remained in scracth.
Unfortunately the whole machine is a reproduction, most likely made in India in recent years, the reason the winding handle points up is because the motor is taken from a portable gramophone, the rest of the parts are of modern production and unfortunately not meant to play records very well
Thank you for your comment.

fantastico, almeno adesso so come funziona un grammofono ma avresti dovuto farcelo sentire con un 78 rpm :D
Hahaha, hai ragione, grazie :)
