The Lie We Call Home - A Silent Hill 4 Analysis

- Silent Hill 4: The Room is a fascinatingly flawed title, but unfortunately it is those flaws that obscures what makes it great. My aim with this analysis is to look past its deficiencies and reveal the depth that makes it a worthwhile experience.
Special thanks to SHN Survival Horror Network for providing gameplay footage:

If you peer through the bloody peephole, you see Henry with his eyes gouged out murmuring the 21 sacraments. That was the best "haunting"
Yeah that's one of the best for sure.
Agreed. I actually get really hype when I see the peephole leaking. Screencap time.
But the one that upset me the most was the jeans cat. I just can't tolerate that sound. My pet cat hates it, too.
Funniest one is probably the Silent Hill shoes trying to run off, leaving stains. If you don't count the decapitated floating DeSalvo head easter egg, that is. Always cracks me up when I spot him drifting by.
I also like Walter's portrait, mainly because its location, just behind the wall with the portrait, the real Walter is there
I'm 4ft10
@mamnykk8515 okay
Couldn't care less what people think of this game, it's a masterpiece and the very last true Silent Hill entry.
@@DanielSantosAnalysisI believe he is talking about Silent Hill fans. Personally, I love SH4 (even with the annoyances of Eileen) over SH3. I still play SH4 to this day. IMO it’s was unappreciated.
aye
I'm very small
Until the remake of 2😊
It’s nice to see this game getting the more well thought out praise it deserves. Nice vid you earned my sub.
"We all like to think of ourselves as the main characters of our lives. But for most events outside our purview we are at best supporting characters where we are forced to be the main perspective character give that we're hopelessly shackled by our main perspective view." This guy has got bars
I've always been under the impression that Henry is a hikikomori. His poor social skills and affectless personality are indicators. He has no real familial or social attachments. His career is distant from human interaction, mainly employed to photograph landscapes. Talk about the ultimate violation for someone suffering from this condition! His home is being invaded from every angle. His self-imposed prison is physically, _violently_ manifested. He's forced out in every way, to interact with a living nightmare!
[Broken to hide spoilers. Also, edits.]
But sometimes, that's what Silent Hill is trying to do. Just like the Sunderland case, the power there is trying to show the called their flaws and sins. Although their suffering is great, the good endings reward and repair them. Henry stepped out into the daylight, and sought out Eileen. He doesn't need to be shut-in any longer, there's a whole world outside that damned apartment.
All that aside, excellent essay! You've done a great job illustrating the claustrophobia and paranoia of having your space invaded.
I'm really little
This is a beautiful love letter to SH4 and a wonderful analysis of the game
For a couple years now I’ll re-watch this occasionally because of how much I love SH4 but also it’s just excellently written and very relaxing
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm actually currently working on a video for SH2, original not remake, I hope you enjoy that one too when it drops!
@DanielSantosAnalysis oh m goodness!! Looking forward to it! 😁
Why is SH4 so underrated? I actually love it so much that I ended up prefering it over SH2, but that's just my opinion! The game is so immersive, atmospheric and also unnerving pratically all the time, the story is just genius and characters are very well constructed. Not to mention the soundtrack, perfect just as in the previous games.
For me, despite loving 4 as well, I think what makes 2 the objectively better game is that it's more about James dealing with his trauma and demons than what we get in 4 from Henry. I'm no expert on analysis, but I feel like 2 has the much deeper story, a story that encourages self reflection more than 4 does by the end. Combine that with 4 having some general polish issues and poor design choices and you can sort of see why it's the odd one out of the original games. Again, I still love it so much, and I also prefer Silent Hill 1 and 3 over 2. But if I were to be objective and put personal opinions aside, 2 is the best entry we've gotten so far.
Story, characters, atmosphere... loved it. But the gameplay itself just wasn´t fun.
I'm really short
finally got around to giving this game a chance and finished it last night, Watching this video brought a huge smile to my face. I felt exactly the same way. I love how you analyzed the game for what it IS and not how it “should” have followed its predecessors. This game will always stick with me for its OWN reasons, as did SH2 stuck with me for its own and so on so forth. As frustrating as this game was, the anxiety & “scaryness” this game trifled me with was fucking insane. might be shot for saying this but in my opinion, this was the scariest one out of the series. Absolute brilliant video man thank you for this !
You're very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I always felt that people focused way too much on the flaws and ignored all of the really fascinating elements of the game, so it's good to see the video resonated.
I have a deep, irrational fear of some murderer or monstrosity just opening my door and turbo-murdering me while I'm just minding my own business watching yt videos in my room or something, and I haven't even played this game.
It would've been pretty ironic if that happened while you were watching this video in particular. 😂
Sounds like what officer amber guyger did
The phrase "turbo-murder" alone will give me nightmares 😊
Probably the best SH4 analysis out there, and I've seen a LOT. Looking forward to more stuff from you!
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words!
I'm so short
I'm a short ass
Amazing video mate, silent hill 4 is criminally underrated. I would say that jts the last truly great silent hill game.
I remember listening to this vid while dealing with finals around when it came out and in a way made me appreciate my home in an unexpected way
I'll be honest i did not realise we were playing as Joseph at the beginning, i thought that was just Henry having a nightmare. You learn something new everyday.
This game was far beyond its time, great video man!
Agreed, it's actually a shame more games didn't take inspiration from it.
Dude, I was legitimately writing a video essay for SH4 but then I happened upon this video. You highlight literally each aspect I was going to cover. Nice damn work. Thank you for this video. Now I can focus on writing another project.
Thank you for the kind words! I do hope that you reconsider and make your own video on SH4 regardless, I think the game needs more love and I'm sure your own unique voice on the topic could add something meaningful to the discourse.
This video appeared as recommended and just by reading the title I knew it was going to be worth a watch. It was indeed. Silent Hill 4 is my favorite Silent Hill game, and videos like these are always welcomed.
One of my favorites, it has a lot of things in common with P.T.
You might not believe me but play it yourself and you will know what I mean.
Let me reword that for you: Silent Hills/P.T has a lot in common with Silent Hill 4 (you compare current things to things that came before)
P.T is silent hill lol so yeah, they will share similar elements because they're siblings or offspring. We're you aware P.T ,short for Playable-Trailer , was for a future game called Silent Hills? Lol Yes, Silent Hill but there's more than one(Everyone in the meeting claps)😂 Thats how I picture the pitch meeting lol
I agree that deep feelings I get when I play SH4 I felt the same when I played P.T. I don't know why actually P.T was the main reason why I'm playing SH4 again lately.
So strange to see a song from Silent Hill 4's soundtrack in my recommended which led me to this video right after trapping a literal snake in my kitchen. My safe place isn't safe anymore. 😑
MAN this video is so well done!!! I cant stop watching it. I come back to it from time to time just to experience how well its made and how you talk about the strange world of silent hill 4.
Number 4 is one of my favorites. It is still creepy down to this day.
Silent hill 4 was the first silent hill game I ever played , getting me interested in these games
I'm just imagining Henry using the porcelain thrown while the monsters are sticking their fingers under the bathroom door like cats do.
Great video... Sh 4 was one of my favorite games that I played despite of some flaws... It's masterpiece
Almost everything I see on this game seems to be how it is, as you said, the weakest game of the original era, so it's refreshing to see the game dissected for what it is, not what it isn't.
I actually think building a horror structure off of the conceit of "home" and the ideas and comforts it should represent is fascinating and it feels like a fresh and innovative concept even after all this time.
I hope more people, especially people who skipped this game due to the negative discourse around it, can see this video and give it a chance. I feel like too often the flaws of a game become the only conversation around it, especially in a long running series.
While Silent Hill 2 is a wonderful game and I get why so many were inspired by it, I think it's a shame we haven't seen more games inspired by Silent Hill 4 instead, given how unique and fascinating it is.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis I think it would be really cool to see some modern horror creators take the idea of "home being corrupted" and give their take on it. Hopefully SH4 is getting to the point in history where it's far enough away from it's initial critical reception and people can look at it for what it is
@@HybridAngelZero The only game I can think of that touches on the subject is Anatomy by Kitty Horrorshow, which is a great little game.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis I just looked it up, it definitely has a cool vibe. And of course, I am a sucker for the PSone-esque aesthetic xD
What is so interesting is that I can definitely relate to the feeling of your home not feeling like a safe place. I wouldn't go as far as to say that my childhood was abusive, but there were definitely difficulties at home. There's nothing more terrifying then having to go home to someone who you are afraid of, even if it is illogical. I know that lots of people can relate to this feeling, especially those who have been in more abusive situations than what I was in. There is a similar premise that occurs within a story I'm working on, and I think that Silent Hill 4 comes closest to this feeling I am trying to convey.
You have so few subs and views, but make no mistake, this is one of the best breakdown videos of Silent hill 4 that I've ever seen. The original team silent was MASTERFUL at psychological horror and narration. The techniques utilised really made the story elevated.
Its one of those stories in which every person can come up with their own interpretation due to the ambiguous nature of the narration.
Thank you for such a great vid. If you have anymore on silent hill then please inform me.
I'm humbled by your kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed the video so much! Truthfully I don't have any immediate plans to return to Silent Hill just yet, but my connection with the series is strong and I will more than likely return to it at some point.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis which silent hill is your favourite?
@@abubakr4401 It's a tie between SH2 and SH3. I know SH2 tends to get the most praise, but I think SH3 is just as good.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis nice. Story wise, i like silent hill 1. Gameplay wise i like 3 and 4.
I like the visuals and atmosphere of SH1 the most. While technically, SH2-4 look "better", I have a fondness for PS1 visuals and I think SH1 utilizes them to great effect, it has such a unique look and feel to it.
Wow i though this would have way more views. This video is a amazing explanation of the story of silent hill four, your vioice kept my attention the whole time. I will definitely be checking out more of your videos cheers!
I thoroughly enjoyed your commentary throughout this video, especially how deeply thoughtful it was and as a fellow deep thinker!! I loved it!!
This is hands down *the* best video essay on a favorite game of mine. Absolutely brilliant.
I relate to SH4 in a way that I don't with the other games. So the horror hits harder for me, coupled with the randomness of Henry's involvement - meaning even if you are a normal person you aren't quite immune to the reach of the town - is gut-wrenching.
After playing Resident Evil 4, I thought I could never be scared by a game again... then I played SH:4. It's unnerving to say the least. You're never truly safe!
I'll never get over how Japan does so well with taking something that should be safe and turns it completely around on you, bathrooms, apartments, etc. Be it the Silent Hill series, or films like Cure or Pulse, they just understand how to create horror in such a subtle way that the west never has.
I'm gonna steal "The Lie We Call home," for a song title. Sounds really cool.
Be sure to leave me a writing credit.
I always loved how weird and unforgiving Silent Hill 4 felt. Back when I first got it on Xbox my friends from school started to shit all over it because it was so different to the other 3 games at the time. I kept with it and found something truly special in SH4.
oh man, this is exactly the kind of sh4 analysis i’ve been looking for for years. i have a lot of thoughts on this game and its strange oneiric storytelling, but i feel like i’m always chasing commentary that doesn’t mire itself in diagesis or plot details or worst of all, lore. even the better class of videos on it focus heavily on subversion through gameplay, which is great and true, but what you’ve done here is REALLY chew into the heart of metaphor and make articulate, persuasive points that i’ve never heard before. this was excellent my dude
Comments like yours give me life, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent analysis of a very underrated game. While not my personal favorite SH installment, SH4 still terrifies me whenever I think about going back to the room only to find the walls be infested with ghosts.
Thank you!
SH4 isn't my favorite either, but it's still a very interesting and intriguing game.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis Absolutely. It's definitely a game that sticks with you.
I'll defend this "black sheep" of the series till the day I die.
It certainly deserves more love despite its flaws.
It's so good to see other people appreciating this masterpiece as it should be. ❤
This vid needs atleast 500K views.Well done mate!!
This channel is on life support basically, that won't happen.
I just make videos as a hobby, I'm not trying to get big or do this as a living.
nice epilogue dude love your take on SH4
This game deserves a remake.. keep it original and include everything they wanted in it before they were told no, too scary… and also, include what they wanted to do, but couldn’t thanks to Konamis impatience for them to work and completely execute this masterpiece.
Silent hill is amazing and scary and kicks ass
Brother I love your video! Thank you very much!
My pleasure!
i wonder if Fatal Frame 3 nightmare-real life concept inspired by this. although in Fatal Frame 3 the scare more effective because we're not prepared at all unlike SH4 which gave us foreshadowing with the intro
Amazing video brother ! I love SH4 , but I rarely play it. To me it’s the hardest and most uncomfortable SH to play . Very anxiety inducing , it’s not even fun lol .
It’s a very special game , but they might of gone too far with SH4 lol. That’s what makes it so special and important .
Great video overall! Silent hill is a series i really need to get back into.
Honestly, only the first 4 games and Shattered Memories are the only entries worth trying out, you can comfortably ignore the rest of the series.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis i completely agree.
Oh dang I didn’t see this coming! This is only other SH game I’ve played as well xD
This is really great!!!! Love this take on Silent Hill 4!
Its nice to see a review that focuses on the good aspects of this game rather than just complaining about all the stuff it did wrong. I mean yeah, it has flaws, quite a few in fact, yet it has some really cool qualities as well.
Not to be nitpicky, but this is an analysis, not a review. Had it been a review, I probably would've felt more obligated to bring up and discuss those flaws, however my intent with this video was moreso to dive deeper into what the game is conveying thematically and symbolically.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis Fair point, I never really considered the technical difference between Review and Analysis.
@@dreadrath To put it simply, a review is an assessment of something as a monetary product, basically looking at it from the perspective of a buyer, while an analysis is more specifically taking a deep dive into the work, regardless of what it's worth and evaluating it as a piece of art. I think if anyone watched my video with the intent of wanting to know if the game is worth their money, my video simply doesn't work, I spoil the story, I don't really talk about how the game plays or how the flaws impact the experience. Hopefully that clears things up!
Even with a gaping hole in the wall?
I'm still taking that shit before I head into another dimension
This literally made me laugh out loud.
I love silent hill. Ever since completing the first one on ps2. The world the mystery just draws me in.
This is a really good video. I was in some situations lately where home was both a burden to go back to but also other places I ventured to as a replacement were in shit, so it created a lot of discomfort. The Pandemic makes this more apparent. I never made it too far into this game. I did watch all the cutscenes later, though. Some of the stuff about the villain did resonate quite a bit. I always felt the intro to this game was fantastic. I think the two headed monsters are some of the scariest in gaming too. But I think I was a bit worn on the series by the time I played the game, and some frustrations like the puzzles in the prison level, just turned me away from ever finishing the game.
you made me love this game probably more the og 1-2-3..
Commenting just to support great content.
Thank you!
Good video. Makes me want to play it.
The second half of the game is unfortunately kind of a slog, but I think it's worth it regardless.
How you gonna do a whole analysis on the room in SH4 without mentioning that Walter thought the apartment itself was his mom. Very blatantly, in the source material, multiple times: Walter thinks this room is his ma and he is ritualistically murdering 21 people (including himself) to revive his mompartment.
Because that's not what the video is about. Gotta admit, mompartment gave me a chuckle.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis luv u
great video...
I like the Steins;Gate music playing in the intro
What's the music thats played at the very start of the video?
What a fucking ending monologue dude woaw shit, that was breathtaking
Ayo he made a vid hype!
Excellent analysis and video. 8/10. Would've been a flawless video had it not been for some of your findings.
One thing I dislike about the fandom surrounding the Silent Hill franchise is some of the liberties people take in interpreting how things are presented within the games. I know it's set up that way in many cases, but some things are just inarguable. Case and point..... "black"....."patch".... behind the dresser? It's an obvious attempt at digging a hole through the wall, and from what can be discerned from it, it took a hell of a lot of effort. The small hole that he managed to create that allows for one to peer through to the room ahead was the BEST Joseph could do, and shows that whatever had a hold of the room had reinforced the walls.
That said, it being hidden behind the dresser could merely be rationalized away as nothing more than parts of the other world manifesting into the current room. And no, what I'm saying is not repeating your "corruption and spreading it" point, as it's actually quite pure, in every sense of the word - I'm not concerned for norms and customs regarding ettiquette and being proper in cases such as these, I'm only worried for what's factually, and objectively right, and in this instance, if you have Cthulu terrorizing you in your room, and all other attempts to get in contact with me, your next door neighbor, has failed, I don't give a crap how you go about doing it or if you find me in the craziest, compromised position.....KNOCK MY ENTIRE WALL OUT IF YOU HAVE TO IN ORDER TO WARN ME THAT THAT IT AIN'T SAFE HERE ANYMORE. We'll make it out of here together, no questions asked, even if it means leaving a trail of toilet paper all the way back to the bathroom I came out of.
Decency? Privacy? Perspective, opinions, and point of view? What? Man, forget all of that. I only want the RIGHT conclusion - get me out of there. Literally, if you blew through my wall and I could plainly see demons, blood guts and ass flying out of the area you just came from, I'm not asking you a motherfuckin thing, we're both out of there. That's it. And anyone with any sense would do the same.
Awesome video dude! I didn’t like this game my first playthrough but now I wanna give it another go 😂
Thanks! That said it's a rather flawed game, I find it more enjoyable as an artistic piece to reflect upon and think about, rather than actually playing it.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis I hear that, most games I enjoy seem to fall into that category. Great stories are hard to fit into game form sometimes
I have enjoyed your version 👍
Great video, really good analysis. You really made an effort to break down all the details. Your Declan be a little over the top sometimes; aggressively stressed words, stretched out phrases at the end of sentences. Just an observation.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Sorry if my delivery wasn't to your tastes, it's a weird style I've unconsciously developed to be quite honest.
Got this randomly suggested in m my feed and was not diamond, have my subscription!
Unfortunately, I couldn't complete the game. I was playing pass-the-pad style and neither of us could stab the subway ghost, which made the level pretty much unplayable, the unpolished aspects were grating, and the magic of the apartment sections had worn off. I still really appreciate dissections because I feel it could have been so much better, and there's so much to learn from it - those first-person sections defined survival horror in the 2010s.
I'm glad you appreciated my dissection :)
The best part about Silent Hill 4 was the Silent Hill 4 music video
silent hill 4 is same as resident evil 4 DIFFIRENT BUT GOOD
I love this!
Glad to hear it 😉
Number 1 dan number 4 is the best silent hill for me. Played 3 but couldn't connect with the protagonist.
Lowkey I kinda love 4 more than 1.
Kotomine Kirei Analysis (Part 2), please.
You're a real one for remembering that one, lol. I do want to return to that one day, but it wont be part 2, it would be me going back to the drawing board and redoing the whole thing since I am not really happy with it anymore.
The BEST Silent Hill game ever
I wouldn't go quite that far, but it is certainly under appreciated.
I really wish they'd make a remake and do it justice. Its a good story but needs a competent team who have a love for the craft of gaming, understanding of psychology and horror. The games lazy audio, color grading and mechanics over shadow the wonderful isolated plot
This game is great bro much scarier than 2 and 3
I think 2 and 3 are scarier, but 4 is still scary in its own right.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis From every perspective, but the gameplay I agree. SH 2 and 3 are too easy tho and this game is more challenging
@@DrayLoco Hmm, I don't really think the gameplay being more challenging makes it scarier though? I think what makes SH4 scary has less to do with the gameplay and more to do with how the gameplay is framed in the narrative.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis I guess just adds more pressure with the ghosts, also enemies in general were much scarier and more aggressive and having to worry about another persons safety made it even more stressful. In SH2 you get so much ammo and healing and the enemies all suck, haha SH2 is my favorite one still, but is only scary through it's incredible atmosphere as you're not ever in any real danger in my opinion.
You haven't been on forever world podcast In a while where you disappear to shintai?

Glad to see some Silent Hill 4 defenses popping up in the last year. It's obviously the weakest of the original 4, but very much worth a play through at least once.
My intent wasn't to "defend" SH4 perse, I just wanted to dig deeper into it because I hadn't seen anyone bring up the elements and themes I noticed.
U weakest
I definitely don't think this game was as good as the prior 3, but it scared me the most between walking around the apartment in first person view and the enemies (especially the ones who could only be put down temporarily). It's inferior overall to the first 3 but completely shits on every SH game after still.
Super creepy game
the only silent hill I never finished...I get what it is going for, but I just think it's frustrating
The second half in particular can be tedious.
The worst thing that happened with silent hill was having more specific traditions. Not saying 4 is a masterpiece, but I've seen what happens when traditions exist for their own sake.
It's ironic that people were dismissive of SH4 at the time of release for being too different, yet most of the games that came after it were harshly criticized for aping SH2.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis Aping a "sweet rifle" will always lead to disaster.
I remember the first half of the game being really cool and interesting but the 2nd half is where I just lost interest. I recall being bored a lot of the time and Eileen being annoying plus the lack of health regen in the room and the general obtuse nature in some parts plus stalker enemies really annoyed me.
I do think the game's concept is really cool since I can connect to it now more than ever.
I don't disagree that the second half of the game is lame, but I think there's a lot more to it than people give it credit for, which was my intention with the video.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis
You did do a good job at shining light on the game.
Frank Sinatra's "Balls in Yo Jaws" used to play at my uncle's house all the time when I was young! I remember him picking me up in his van after t-ball practice, it was cool because it always had candy! It reminds me of him. ...after his passing it turned out he wasn't actually related to me? Take a listen.

Truly a classic
Who noticed that the apartment is the same as Jeffrey Dahmer's ?
walter sullivan looks like the lead singer of Korn.
Very poetic, but you missed the pay off!
The home is a sacred space. The terror and vulnerability of ones home being infiltrated, be it physically or a manifestation of trauma and emotion, either psychological or supernatural is horrifying, no doubt.
BUT you neglected the rest of the narrative and how it ties in to Walter to bring us to the apex of the story!
I'm sorry you felt that way, but it wasn't my intent in the video to expound on the explicit narrative, but rather the more overarching thematic and symbolic meaning. I'm glad you found it poetic all the same.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis I think the video is spot on and very concise! And watching it again i understand you are analyzing specific theory and not the entire narrative.
I was just getting a bit hyped to hear your analysis of Walters influence in these design choices.
Regardless great video!
It's a good game but I dont class it as silent hill , just doesnt have the same feel but it's good none the less
While it does have a different feel to it, I still consider it a Silent Hill game, it feels like a natural progression thematically even if it there are notable deviations from what we've come to expect from the series.
Yooooo
The toilet bit is a bit if a laughable stretch. It could've been as simple as giving a story reason for Henry getting the plumbing pipe. Hole just appeared in the middle of his plumbing. Not everything has a deep meaning
A stretch in what sense exactly?
Personally, I didn't like the direction they went with Silent Hill 4. It felt too "game like" with the hub world of the apartment.
I hated the inventory screen, since it was in game.
Also the ghost enemies able to harm you by just being next to you, and being unstoppable, was more annoying than scary.
Combat was clunky in a bad way, with its destructible weapons.
Also, having to revist each location twice, just felt like cheap game design.
The narrative choice to have Walter believe room 302 was his mother is just baffling, perhaps it was a translation issue. Like it was actually a way to get back to his mother, but that got lost in translation.
I couldn't get past these hiccups and never finished the game, even though I pre-ordered it.
Remember: Silent Hill 4, Siren, & Resident Evil 4 all came out around the same time.
Walter only believed the room was his mother as a child, he didnt continue to believe it as an adult. It was moreso a method to tie into the symbolism of the room itself representing the womb.
The game came out in 2004 so a spoiler warning is stupid for a game that’s almost 20 years old.
There are plenty of people that have not had a chance to play the game, it's not stupid to simply give those people a heads up in case they want to play the game themselves first.
If everyone in the club did your mom would you do your mom too,?
@@DanielSantosAnalysis agreed, I literally just ordered it off of Mercari yesterday for $148 before tax and shipping, waiting for it to ship to my house so I can play it for the very FIRST time, that’s very poor logic to say a spoiler alert is stupid.

I've never played a Silent Hill game
The first four games are some of the most atmospheric and well written games in the horror genre, one of my favorite series.
Daniel Santos: Analytical Editorials I could never get deep into the horror genre, both mentally and physically(blood and gore gives me huge knots in my stomach to the point I pass out)
