    i am so glad there’s a wait list! that implies there is a surplus of people waiting to adopt a retired guide dog, rather than a surplus of retired guide dogs looking for homes. that is so unbearably sweet omg

      @@kalyanigollamudi759 that sounds different. Guide dogs will be of a certain age when they retire and have had a lot of training and care because of the job they had to do.
      However kids that are up for foster/adoption are all sorts of different ages and can act in unexpected or difficult ways. The older the child the more developed they (and their behaviour triats) will be, which can be difficult for people who want the child to be as if it was their own and to see it grow.

    Most of my dad’s retired guide dogs went to live with their old puppy trainers or family friends. One of them that retired early lived for 5 more years on a farm with a bunch of other golden retrievers. His new family took him to the beach and everything. But I missed him terribly.
    We convinced my dad to keep one of the dogs when my brother and I were both adults. He kept wanting to get in his old harness to guide my dad. It was both cute and sad.

    Awesome you could keep Olga. Hope she and Molly get along really well when Molly is out of harness and able to play. Thank you for understanding that every single guide dog owner’s circumstances are different. With my first dog, he had developed a rare form of cancer less than a year after he and I had graduated from a school here in the States. This cancer is so rare, it has a genetic link to human adolescent boys, and it was my first dog and a handfull of other male labrador retrievers who had it. I still don’t remember what it's called, but I’m hopeful some kind of treatment has been developed for this rare cancer form. I had to give him back to the school, and unfortunately, he only lived three months after his return there. He was well-cared-for and loved by all of us. My second dog, due to where I was residing and their pet policy, was adopted by a friend who lives ten minutes away from that location, so I could still visit from time to time. She worked for 9 and ½ years or thereabouts. When she was not working, she was a well-behaved pet, and retiring meant her status would change, so her ability to stay with me in her capacity as a pet was not possible as she was well over 25 pounds (just over 11 kg.) This second dog has been over the rainbow bridge as of April fifth; may she rest in peace.

    My parents helped raise service dogs for a while. When one of the dogs (We named him Deejay) wasn't allowed to continue becuase he had a mild fear of children and would (rarely) bark at them. That little bit was enough to get him kicked from the program but he was so easily trained and so well behaved aside from that so he was moved to the breeding program. We got to keep him and he became our family dog instead of a service dog. He needed to keep up with his training regardless and the service dog program paid for and dropped off his food since he was being used for breeding. It was actually pretty cool. And he was an awesome dog to from up with. We got him when I was 6 months and he passed last year. He was 15.

    Thats actually so terribly sad. That dog has been with them their whole life. Has anyone seen those dogs in shelters who've been given up and are defeated and sad and looking down or toward the wall. Dogs are not equipment to throw away when they get old. They are sentient beings and deserve love and respect. If you get one, make room for them for life or dont get one.

  • @XxXShevampXxX
    @XxXShevampXxX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I can't believe I've never thought about this. I guess I just never realized that guide dogs would retire unless they had health problems or were getting older and less mobile. Man, that just hurts my heart though for the ones who aren't kept.
    It's my understanding that guide dogs are specifically bred to be guide dogs and their training starts early while they are pretty young. Once they "graduate" their guide dog training, they're given to their person and usually spend their entire life by their human's side. More so than the time a typical dog spends with their owner, cuz the guide dog will usually be at their side 24/7 so of course there's going to be a pretty strong bond there and I'm definitely one of those people that wholeheartedly believes that dogs are capable of feeling love towards their humans. I don't believe they just put up with us cuz they know we'll feed/water them and provide a comfortable living environment (although I do think that's why cats put up with us like they do 😂) because if that were true, there wouldn't be all these cases where dogs remain loyal even when they're being treated poorly or straight up abused. Or the ones where something happens to their owner causing them to collapse and they stay by their side, even to their own detriment.
    So yes, dogs feel love. And I imagine that love becomes even more complex and deep with a guide dog since they're raised to see their human's safety as their #1 priority. So they spend their whole lives in service to their human whom they've come to love very deeply, only to have it all ripped away from them when they begin to show their age. That has to be an extremely traumatic experience for the poor dogs.
    Now just to be clear here, I'm not trying to place blame on the disabled owner or imply that they're bad people because they're not. There's nothing wrong with needing a new guide dog once yours begins to have issues related to their age or gets sick. And if they don't have the means to keep their retired guide dog, you can't blame them for that. I'm not making this comment to place blame on anyone. I'm just saying that it has to be rough for the retired dogs. But hopefully, the charities and groups that breed and train guide dogs have a protocol in place for those retired dogs who are unable to continue living with their owner that ensure they are rewarded for their lifetime in service and are placed somewhere they can spend their remaining years in comfort and being cared for lovingly. For a lifetime of service, I'd say that's the least that we can do for them.

    • @susanstevenson3532
      @susanstevenson3532 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Could not agree more. Surely part of the work of orgs that train guide dogs, should be to support retired guide dogs and their person so they can stay with their family??? It makes sense a blind person would struggle with 2 dogs, but surely providing dog walkers, daycare, health costs, etc should be a given???
      These dogs give their whole lives in service of someone... And they're essentially given away when they're old and can't work?
      Rehoming is hard enough on any dog, never mind a senior dog that is so bonded to one person. This doesn't sit right with me at all.

    • @newtscamander2461
      @newtscamander2461 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’ve raised two guide dogs for a charity. Most guide dog organizations have normal people volunteer to raise a guide dog in training, and the dogs aren’t taught to actually guide until they are 1-2 years old and are returned to the organization. We thought of it as first raising the puppy to be a good dog, then you send them to doggy college to learn to be a guide dog.
      They do learn the significance of a jacket/bandana though, which tells them they’re “working” and to be on their best behavior.
      I think the dogs have changed “people” before, having had a raiser for at least a year, then a handler for another, then hopefully they are with their visually impaired person for the longest amount of time. After this, if their person can’t keep them, they often go back to the puppy raisers, who they remember and still love from their childhood. I don’t think it has to be that traumatic at all. You can usually tell when a dog is stressed, but these situations are well reinforced with treats and love, so the doggies usually aren’t too upset

    Retired guide dogs can become a very difficult situation. The dog has been one-on-one with their person for years and get very possessive of their job and person.

    Once I’m stable financially and have my own place (hopefully 4 acres with a small ranch) I will adopt some senior and retired doggos

    Important to note some service animals are required to be returned to their trainers at retirement (make sure to know who you are buying from for both accurate training and so you can keep your lovely best friend)

    Why do you retire a guide dog? I know illness is when and I’m guessing just age. Just curious. I love your videos. You’ve adjusted beautifully. I’m sure there are times it’s as perfect as your life is. God bless your fiancé.
    In your case does Olga still have times she works. She must miss working.
