How to Play Attacking Midfielder in Soccer / How to Play CAM in Football
Attacking midfielders usually wear the highly sought after number 10. An attacking midfielder is sometimes referred to as center attacking midfielder (CAM), creative midfielder, playmaker, or laying attacking midfielder in soccer. They are stationed ahead of the rest of the midfield and behind the forwards. They tend to act as the main distributor of the ball, the initiator of most attacks, and considered by many as the soccer coach on the field.
Many soccer fans consider the number 10 as the most prestigious shirt on the field and it is often given to the best attacking player on the team, sometimes even when they do not play attacking center midfielder. An attacking midfielder’s primary jobs are to collect the ball from other midfielders and defenders on the team. Therefore, the ability to control a pass and take a quality first-touch is a must. The attacking center midfielder looks where their teammates are positioned, often before they even receive the pass.
From there, they use their judgment on whether to pass the ball to a teammate with a better chance of progressing the play or to keep the ball and dribble themselves. Even well-organized defenses can be torn apart with an attacking center midfielder’s vision and creativity. Next, as the play develops, the attacking center midfielder is constantly looking for a teammate to pass to and when nearing the outside of the 18-yard box, begin to think about shooting the ball too.
The better the attacking center midfielder, the more players from the other team they will draw towards them creating opportunities for their teammates to score. Due to their positioning on the field, attacking center midfielders and center forwards are often said to be “playing in the hole” of the opposing team’s defense. Attacking midfielders are often allowed a great deal of freedom regarding where they travel on the field. Their shifty movement can make it difficult for defenders to mark everyone appropriately, which creates havoc for the other team.
All of these responsibilities mean that attacking midfielders need to have strong stamina. Also, an attacking midfielder may act as a second striker. who can both score goals and distribute the ball to teammates making a run. When a team uses an attacking center midfielder, they pair them with a defensive midfielder to focus more on preventing the other team from scoring.
You would rarely see a player positioned as a false nine, an attacking midfielder, and a center midfielder on the same team. Remember that they are still a part of the midfield and therefore have some responsibilities back on defense. They must look to cut off passing lanes through the most dangerous part of the field, the middle. Attacking midfielders also need to position themselves well to prevent the other team from using their midfielders to start attacks to be the best cam in soccer.
Skills Needed:
- Ability to shoot from outside the 18-yard box
- Great at finding short and long-distance passing lanes and excellent at passing the ball
- Can control the ball and dribble with pressure from many opponents
- Great endurance
- Communicate, act, and lead as the coach on the field
Advantages of being an attacking midfielder:
- A leader on the team who directs the attack.
- Has plenty of opportunities for assists and often scores goals.
- Often, one of the best dribblers on the team and has freedom to travel where they best feel they can help the team score.
Disadvantages:
- With leadership comes responsibility, which means they take some of the blame for losses.
- Often help start the offensive play but do not always get the assist or goal.

Tips for someone who can't dribble well and pass good
Kutloano, I was there myself years ago. I would watch my two series on Drribling and Passing here on TH-cam. Otherwise, consider grabbing the books I've written for detailed manuals on how to improve drastically! As a tip, change of pace is one of the most important dribbling topics and a moving first touch is important to be great at receiving passes. 👍
