I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today we are swatching and comparing 8 different brands of Davy's Gray (or Grey?) : Winsor & Newton, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Qor, Mijello Gold, Holbein, Paul Rubens, Old Holland and a similar colour by Wallace Seymour.
Davy's Gray is a beautiful greenish grey, perfect for winter foliage, seascapes and moody skies. Each brand has a different interpretation, a different formula and therefore a totally different hue. This is way is so much fun to swatch and compare them.

Hi Elizabetta, the original formulation for Davy's Grey was Pbk 19 - ground slate-which Winsor and Newton used for years until they changed to a mixed pigment formula, so should be called a hue. So I now use the Ardoise Grey which seems to be the only source for this original colour which is unfortunately of a low lightfastness. Mr Davy was, I believe, an eminent early landscape watercolourist who invented the colour who W & N made for him. Despite its limitations I am still fond of this pigment which I feel has a lovely subtlety. Thanks for a great overview of all the alternatives.
Thank to you for this great message! I think lightfastness is slightly overrated. I mostly paint for the pleasure of the process, in sketchbooks; therefore lightfastness is not so crucial if I really like a color. It's an important information to have should you hang or sell your arts! So I agree with you, if you like the color, why not using it? The Ardoise Grey is really a fascinating subtle colour. @@WatercolorElisabetta Many thanks. I completely agree with you. Although I am careful to use newer light fast pigments in sold work I am often cross with paint hues that are sold to replace original formulations. They often handle differently to the colours they replace, lacking subtlety, granulation, mixing utility and behaving very differently. I wish you would look at the Brown Madder Alizarin, which I find an indispensable mixer ,which seems to be another victim of reformulation. As a pigment need I bought up lifetime supply of this - and others- before they became unobtainable !

@@WatercolorElisabetta Good day Elisabetta, thank you for your excellent video on PR 206 which reflects my own feelings perfectly. This and a sale led me to order even more of this lovely pigment by other brands. As if I need more paint! but the Maimeri version looks very intense.( I dislike the deadness of Perylene Maroon and loathe its huge drying shift. ) I'm now struggling to find a single pigment Yellow Ochre PY 42/43 that does not have an heavy orange or brown bias for mixing as my favourite W &N variety now has begun to use a very brownish pigment version. I would appreciate your advice as we seem to agree on so much Many thanks.
@atelierthhun1165 have you looked into yellow ochre light by Winsor and newton? I quite like it!

Van Gogh looks way better than any other! Both Van Gogh and Rembrandt series, have my favorite colours. Payne's grey, if you look at Payne's own paintings, where this colour was invented, at some of them it looks like the Van Gogh version and on other's looks,like the Rembrandt version. That's one of the many reasons,Royal Talens is my favorite brand of watercolours. Have a very merry Christmas!!

Van Gogh has colours, that are better than Rembrandt, and Rembrandt line has colours, that are better compared to their Van Gogh version.Danile Smith 2.5ml cost 15$ here,where REmbrandt, cost the 10ml only4$ and the 10ml Van Gogh, less than 2$.So ithe Daniel Smith cost 60$ for a 10ml vs VS Talens 3$ average. Very interesting and helpful. I have Winsor and Newton's Davy's Grey, but have yet to use it.

I have Holbein's Davy's Grey, I haven't had a chance to really use it but I thought the color was so lovely when I saw it I immediately bought it!

I like how you have very aptly described Davy’s Grey as a delightful color. It really is. I discovered the color a few years ago when I bought the Van Gogh version of the color. I really like it’s soft and muted tone, and it is very easy to re-wet. Thank you for showing this comparison video. I think I like the Winsor & Newton version the best. :)

Very interesting seeing all the different versions of this color. They are all quite different. I like the ones without the white added with the Old Holland being the exception. Then just look a bit chalky (less luminous) to me. I'm assuming that the Winsor & Newton is the closest to the original color. And I agree that adjusting the QOR Slate (with a touch of green - perhaps W&N Terre Verte) would produce something close to their Davy Grey with out the white pigment.

I agree with you about the Mijello version of this soft colour, way too opaque for my liking! I love the Ingleton Green Earth you included. Once again, a wonderful video for us to enjoy. Hi, I enjoy your channel. I had a thought…put your watercolor dots on a palette and not directly on the paper that way you don’t have binder running out on your paper or your can try to shake and massage the watercolor tube to stop the binder from collecting at the top.
Thank you!! It’s not often that I have binder issues….but it can happen…I do exactly what you say and I also mix with a toothpick. I have never tried shaking it though, I will definitely try.

Great review! I love the Holbein because it's the first one I ever had. I love the subtle green tinge. I can see where the W&N is the standard though, and I really like the Wallace Seymour!

I have Da Vinci's Davy's Gray (PG7, PW6, PBk6) which swatches like your Holbein Davy's Grey, and I also have Winsor and Newton and Old Holland's. I am considering purchasing the Wallace Seymour Davy’s Grey Oxford Mudstone, which from the website swatch, looks more like Slate in your Qor swatch. I think American Journey in the US calls their Davy's Gray, Getz Gray and is similar formula to Da Vinci. Didn't really know how to use it so very inspired by using it in the sky and landscape photo!

I do not have any version of Davy’s grey, but am very glad to see your comparison as I am trying to bring together a palette of interesting neutrals to complement or underlie charcoal and/or pen and ink drawings. I had not realised how different this grey could be! So useful to have this information! So many thanks for such interesting content, I know it is going to take a lot to put together such a group of watercolours so this gives me some idea of where to start, and what I might discover,

I am a beginner. I enjoyed your swatching of Davy's gray and explaining the 2 spellings gray and grey. I do not have Davy's Gray yet. Two other TH-camrs swear by Paynes Gray so that is what I started with. In early grade school papers I would spell a word differently in the same paper, not knowing if one of them was correct. There are a few words that at 65, I am still not sure of.
You put a big smile on my face with your message! I will use your strategy for spelling....Payne's Grey is a beautiful colour (I prefer the blueish shades) but you can really have both in your palette as they are completely different! Thanks a lot for your very lovely, cheerful message!

Love these can’t wait to try a few similar colours that would work and also mix some of my own to try in a painting! The Qor, Wallis and Seymour, Holbein and of course the w&n, appear the most atmospheric to me! But they all are interesting! Thanks for sharing and for the example painting, great!

Imagine me!! 🤦♀️ anyway, I checked it out and apparently in GB is spelled with an E, whereas in America with an A…so they are both right! How confusing! 😍. Thank you for your solidarity 😊
Hello. I wonder if there’s a single-pigmented grey (unless it’s a pale black)? Also, PBr, despite it’s brown pigment, not always brown by perception in my experience - the green earth from Sennelier consists of this pigment (PBr7) and it’s pale green 😊 Thank you for showing this colour - I haven’t heard of it and some of them are really beatiful! ❤
Yes, you are totally right about Sennelier Green Earth (you can if you are interested see my recent video about earth Green !)
The only single pigment that comes to my mind is PBk19 (slate) or other genuine mineral pigments. I am swatching one on this video by Wallace Seymour and also Della Magna has one! Thank you for your very good question !

@@WatercolorElisabetta I like this Davy's Grey & do not have it in my limited collection. The closest maybe is A Gallo Verdaccio PBr7/PBk11a nice greenish brown grey. Your sketch is lovely, like a Claude drawing! PS I am across the Atlantic from you in New Jersey😘

@michelemarchesani5139 I don’t know this color you mention, but the composition sounds similar ….anyway Davy’s Grey is a nice addition to a palette!
My Davy’s Gray is the W&N. Holbeins and QOR are nice too. AGallo has a similar very pale grey that I like called Slate Gray. Spelled with an “a”. I don’t think it matters “a” or “e”. Beautiful painting!

Do you know 'Grey Titanium' PW6 from Daniel Smith? And do you think it looks a bit similar like the W&N Davy's Grey? That is a single pigment though. Was wondering how this one would look like in this row, side by side.
Wow what an interesting input you are giving to me!! I didn’t know this colour at all but I think it has high potential…I like warm grey by Sennelier, similar in hue but it has 4 pigments. I think I will buy this Titanium Grey! Thanks!! 😊

I hope it adds something new to play with :) You're right, the warm grey by Sennelier comes very close to Gray Titanium. Maybe the Daniel Smith one is a little bit warmer. But it's hard to tell on screen if you don't own them both. I feel perhaps a new video coming up? ;) Am curious what you think about the Gray Titanium! I've mixed it with a few other colours and love the combination with quinacridone purple and french ultramarine. It creates really pretty moody pastel granulating colours. But on it's own it's stunning too!

I live in the uk, so Davy’s grey is a must on my palette for skies, my Van Gogh looks a lot less green than yours is appearing on screen.
This is very funny, because I found that on screen ìt was not enough green :).

The only Davy’s Grey I have currently is Shinhan, so it’s nice to see the variety in some of the other brands. I reckon it’s close to a lighter Daniel Smith, but a bit hard to tell for sure from the video. Sort of similar to W&N’s Terre Verte but with a black undertone instead of the blue. Intrigued to try a Davy’s Grey sky now as it’ll tie in well with Scotland’s more dreich days.

@@WatercolorElisabetta I wrote Daniel Smith, but have just realised I meant Paul Ruben’s on your video. It’s also a lighter version of Roman Szmal’s Perylene Green which uses the same pigment, PBk31. So if that and the W&N Terre Verte had a baby, it would be close to my swatch of the Shinhan. 😊
I just mix black and green for the hue I want ... I believe a close DS version would be Undersea Green; odd.
In AE, it can be spelled with an A or an E. Most of the time it's spelled with an E. Nice sketch, btw👍
Thank you for the spelling tip! I think that mixing black and green is basically exactly Davy’s Grey, whereas I have the feeling that DS undersea green is slightly warmer, but still a nice muted convenience green. Have a very happy new year, Elisabetta
I don’t like Davies grey because it doesn’t scan well. It comes out “dirty” in the scan.
I do understand. I have the same problem with cerulean!
@@WatercolorElisabetta agree, cerulean photographs well, but scanning turns it almost invisible. Davis gray just turns into mud 😳

My second favorite watercolor paint color next to paynes grey 🩶 i like to mix different ones sometimes! This just shows me which ones i dont have thet i need to add.... That rembrant is beautiful 🤩 but i have the van gogh one so maybe i don't need that one haha
