Best Ways to Solder Wires Together - My 4 Easy Goto Methods.

  • The best ways to solder wires together depends on the size of wire, type of wire, how much working length you have, and application. All that plays a roll in what method/s will work best for you.
Here are my 4 main easy ways to solder join wires together that I've been successfully using for years, both as a tech and hobbyist. I point out the pros and cons of each solder wire splice method as I demonstrate them on different wire.
    Wire Splice Time Index:
    - Intro 0:00
    1. Lap Wire Splice 1:25
    2. Lineman's Splice 6:00
    3. Strand Wire Splice 8:50
    4. Butt Solder Splice 12:18
There are certainly other ways to splice and solder wires together, but I find these 4 will cover most sizes and applications you are likely to run across in radio control modelling, automotive work, HVAC, electronics work, or simple household/garage wiring projects and repairs. They are all fairly easy to master and consistently provide a robust splice.

Amazed at the ''reaction'' time when increasing the temperature on the TS100 !!! I will go watch your review/test on it. Very informative video...as always !!

Super helpful video, thank you! I was trying to come up with the best way to splice wires from a multicore cable in a potting box and I think the lap splice will be the best way to go as I don't have a lot of length to work with.

I mounted my "helping hands" to a big washer. It adds weight and stability to it. The washer is 3/16" thick by 3 1/2" diameter. Also, put a felt pad on the bottom.

You do it so easily! I'm a beginner, just trying my first soldering today. When I try to tin the wire, I can hold the iron on the bottom of the wire for 30 seconds or more and hold the solder on top of the wire, but it never gets hot enough to melt the solder. My iron is at 330 C. I started by putting some solder on the tip and wiping it on the sponge, then try to tin the wire, but it doesn't work. I switched to a wider solder tip, but it didn't help. I guess I need a video for the rank beginner!

@Mike Williams - What size of wire are you soldering and what power is your iron (in Watts)? 330C is a little low for larger wires (14 Awg or larger) so that might be the first thing to try changing. For large wire, you will likely want at least 350C. If your iron is low Wattage, you may have to go even higher (380 to 400C).
To get get good heat conduction from the tip to the wire, you have to have molten solder between the tip and the wire. If you hold a dry tip to the wire, it will never conduct enough heat into the wire to melt the solder. You want to introduce the solder between the tip and the wire.
Low quality solder &/or not enough flux can also be a factor.
I cover these basics in my wire tinning video: th-cam.com/video/DCvo1xQr6jY/w-d-xo.html

The Western Union/Linman splice goes back to the 1800's was developed for Telegraph line repair's (solid wire ) but you see it used on stranded too.

Do you have a video on soldering a webcam usb cord? I have had a horrible time trying to strip the tiny wires. Also, what is all the other non-wire metal and weirdly wrapped wires that surround the original wires? I am a nube. I got into wiring the many old lamps in my dads house, then the cats gnawed on my web cam cord… Thanks for your great video!

When working with & soldering really tiny wires such as USB cables, I pretty much need my magnifying lamp or even my stereo inspection microscope to correctly perform the task. A very fine wire stripper is also needed for the tiny cable as small as 40 awg. The material around the wires is called shielding. It's normally a grounded conductor that will both absorb and reflect RF and electromagnetic interference from getting into the conductors. Google search "shielded cable" if you want to learn more about it.

    Why counterclockwise?
Why would you use a method that you are not a fan of?

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Why is a lineman twisted counterclockwise? Because that's the accepted way it's done since it was first invented and the way we are taught. Feel free to use your Google Fu to find out why & who decided it should twist in that direction.
Just because I'm not a fan of the strand splice is no reason not to use it or show it. A strand splice does after all work best in some applications; plus you know exactly what would happen if I didn't show it - I would get asked "why didn't you include the strand splice?"
