As far as sitcoms go back in the 70's The Wackers was pretty good. Sheila & Ken were actually married in real life, a good start for Cheggars too, a natural actor, a good laugh!!
I don't know why this is hated and considered to be a particularly bad sitcom. I've watched loads of sitcoms, and this is above average. It's quite well-written and well-acted. This is much better than many other sitcoms about families, including According to Jim, Kevin Can Wait, Everybody Loves Raymond, Last Man Standing, Mrs Brown's Boys and Bread.

Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?
That's the R. Catholic cathedral - known locally as "paddy's wigwam" It's referenced in the song In My Liverpool Home: "If you want a Cathedral we've got one to spare..."
I'm on episode 3 and it's not that bad, I don't see why people slated it so much. I do love old comedies though. A lot of people disliked shows like Bread, Selwyn Froggitt and Nearest and Dearest, but I loved them! The very first two series of Last of the Summer Wine were also good, they seemed to be a bit grittier and a little more adult than the later, more family friendly series.
Last of the Summer wine was absolute trash Ima. The only good thing to come from Roy Clarke was Open All Hours - now that would put most other sitcoms into a cocked hat.
Yorkshire accent? You need your ears syringing mate. Ken Jones was born and raised in Liverpool..he died in bloody Prescot, that's how close he came to Yorkshire!
I think this was ITVs scouse answer to Alf Garnet. I remember when it was on when I was a kid. Entertainment for peasants. Keith Chegwin and Alison Steadman though.
It was totally spoilt by the mother who made the accent sound rougher and worse than it actually is...appaling the way she over accentuated every syllable and her acting was shite...with another actress it may have been better

The working classes are the same up and down the country, just with different accents, it's only the Toffs (who own and run everything) who want us all at each others throats! Divide and conquer...what we could do if we stood together against them!
Sorry everybody but,i watched this as a child, and even then it was too boring and not funny at all, compare it to open all hours or the liver birds or even are you being served and the wackers is utter rubbish
