I favour physical media as it acts as an extension of the media its representing, through menu designs, cover art etc. I always think back to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force DVD's, where pressing play all plays every episode of the season at the same time. You'd miss this joke entirely if you just watched the series on HBO Max. Without physical media, everything increasingly feels like content.

Kino’s voice is so soft here. Not that he has a super gruff or deep voice now, but he sounds like a much more reserved and gentle person.

I argue that streaming services can be less convenient compared to physical media or even piracy in terms of viewing experience. Annoying forced overlays that obscure the screen ('skip intro' button, age ratings, etc), occasional buffering glitches/slowdown, casting sometimes refusing to work, improper upscaling in older cartoons, and cluttered UI across every service I've ever used. You have to click on so many buttons just to watch a show you want, even when it's in your favorites. Despite having good portability, their lack of quality of life features makes everything feel sluggish to me.

This is why it's important to keep your copy of the greatest story never told on laser disc.
I thought kino was going to sing Ava Maria at the start of the classic vid

With streaming services, you don’t get the quality you’re paying for compared to getting a Blu-Ray or 4K Blu-Ray. Ones internet connection is always a factor, how fast or slow it is. Compression is the biggest thing that effects the quality when streaming and why you don’t get full 1080p or 4K high definition and sound. Plus, with physical media you don’t have to hope and pray that a streaming service you have will not get rid of a film or show you like as that does happen and people aren’t happy when that happens. Plus with all the streaming services out there, it can be hard for people to afford all the ones that have the stuff people are watching and talking about, especially these days.

@@nascour5991 You can't stream or watch anything online without compression, you gotta use physical media for that, regardless of what is shown or advertised.

Between the ways of accessing media, I believe that the best way of consuming it is to physically own it via DVDs. You don’t have to face the constant fees of cable or streaming, and what DVDs you buy are ones that you permanently own without corporate tampering.

I agree with the part on ownership. Streaming is definitely more akin to renting a movie, but usually with even more accompanying terms and conditions.
Another issue I have with streaming anything is how when it becomes mass adopted (like now) it kinda fucks everybody over, because when people stream content continuously instead of just reading it off their hard drive, it creates unnecessary traffic which strains our internet infrastructure. Despite being far from most visited websites, streaming services account for a majority of internet bandwidth, and given how relatively few services there are in this category, their individual contributions compared to other websites are absolutely ridiculous. This usage in turn drives down internet speeds for the rest of us who might not have anything to do with streaming and view our media offline. It is a serious issue of web traffic bloat with how many resources have to be thrown to upkeep and improve this system, and it shows little sign of stopping

The main reason someone would get Blu-ray rot is from improper storage (e.g., storing discs in warm, humid, or dank conditions). I've heard of older discs which had known manufacturing issues getting it, too. But otherwise, if you store your discs properly (a cool, dry environment), they should last for decades
Hell, I have CDs from the 80s that still work (and I regularly use them). And Blu-ray technology has only improved over the years. So if you bought Oppenheimer on 4k and store it properly, you should have no trouble watching that disc for years to come

I think it would be wise to invest a couple of minutes and dial the focus manually for one particular distance since when left on auto your camera seems to be constantly hunting for it.

Another factor that I don't think is discussed much and probably should be (especially in light of recent "sensitivity reader editions" of books and the incoming flood of Machine Learning™ content) is that a Blu-Ray disc is static. No one has write access to its contents. With a streaming service, you have no idea what might change on their servers or when. Streaming companies and publishers could make subtle or significant revisions with no announcement for any number of reasons. This has always been a possibility, but the technology to do this pretty seamlessly (e.g. deep fakes) is improving quickly and the people with the authority to do it are getting crazier.
To me this is more concerning than the possibility that it may simply be removed from the service without warning. You could end up with films that are available on every streaming service, but the only feasible option for watching the original is by hunting down a used copy of an older home video release (or sailing the high seas). This already happens in fairly innocuous ways now, as in some TV shows that make extensive use of licensed music.

Honestly the news that some streaming services straight up deleted movies cuz they weren’t popular. Idk i think some Oscar Isaac series and Seth Rogen pickle movie disappeared, which doesnt sound super bad, but it just goes to show that streaming services can just erase something from existence. Especially since movies nowadays rarely have DVD releases, especially indie films, so companies can just control access to them and control their existence. I mean movies are already buried beneath algorithm’s and endless fractured competition that ppl who don’t actively look for new films have far less of a chance to be challenged with new movies because algorithms only give you safe bets.

I see the concerns of people who are deeper into movies, but I never felt like I get nothing. I paid to watch a movie and I watched it. The cases are very rare I wasn't fine with it - and on amazon I only rent during the 99ct weekends. The problem of having a blu-ray - is having one. I just don't like it having mountains of discs I rarely use twice. If I loved a movie and want to watch it often, I buy it, sure But most of them doesn't worth it though. And some bitrates never made the difference so far.

Love your video! I agree with all your points, but I also think that the streaming model is for people who used to only watch cable. The quality of cable was always lesser than DVDs, you didnt get to keep the films you saw on cable. And most people are cool with that too:/ There's just a difference between hc movie nerds and casual movie watchers. IMO Keep up the good work👍

I have to defend piracy here: no loading or storing discs, and you can easily download 40-100Gb UHD versions (at least for new or popular films, from private trackers)
I used to buy dvds and rip, but the copy-protection and regions on DB/UHD are a hassle and then I have to put the disc somewhere... I don't give 2 f*cks about supporting Hollywood anyways.
I buy Korean blurays tho; always English subs (while Japanese BD don't). Indian movies doesn't cost anything so I usually buy them as well. Go buy "Break ke Baad", best film of all time. Good nite folks.

Many people don’t have blu-ray players, though. They are quite an investment. Streaming has dominated in recent years for its price, and I think purchasing the “right to stream” has become more popular because (most) people don’t generally go out to buy discs anymore… it’s sort of sad, because going out to purchase the physical disc sort of makes the watching of a film more of an event. You don’t really get that same “event” quality with streamed films, even if you’re paying the same amount of money.

Us collectors of physical media are the minority by far. Streaming is convient, affordable and easy to use. Most people are satisfied watching films once and never thinking about them again.
