My Dad took me to this show and I got to meet Buddy at the bar at his break. He autographed my Remo practice pad and man was I awe struck! He was a very nice guy to a shy 12 year old. Icing on the cake was a very stoned, red eyed gentleman who grabbed my pad and signed it too. Ends up that man was Jo Jones! I still have my pad and you can barely see me in the back of the lounge. I wasn't allowed to stand near the bar during the show. Man what a great night with my Dad!
I brought the tapes of the show several years ago and still watch it every once in a while. My particular favorite part of it is the opening tune "love for sale" the entire band Just breezes through and Buddy is Just perfect of course ; 0 ) I must say I didn't enjoy the west side story solo. in my opinion Buddy seems "weary" and if he was Its understandable after all it was his signature tune ever since he recorded it in the mid 1960s. and even when something is popular with an audience that doesn't mean the drummer doesn't get bored with playing it all the time.
Buddy used everything - singles, doubles, all paradiddles, 6 and 7 stoke rolls. Saw him in '78 at Ontario place when I was a kid. Inspired me to pick up the sticks and continues to inspire me today just as much.
Gets no better than this....you can see the expressions on the faces of the other musicians. Great stuff. I read that Buddy Rich never practiced either. Pure natural talent.
+Shannon K. i think a lot of the "never practiced" rumors were hearsay. his technique is too perfect for him to have not worked at it. plus, i've read other accounts from drummers like billy cobham seeing rich polishing up on his brush work with other greats. i think a lot of his talent was natural, but he definitely honed it in order to perfect it. elite drummer.
+Shannon K. HE NEVER PRACTICED? HAHAHAHAHA what the hell do you think he was doing during this whole video? THIS SOLO SUCKS BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE SOME DUDE WARMING UP HIS HANDS
Buddy, is in my estimation.....the greatest. he was still doing it in his mid 60's. His timing is incomparable. Jesus, I am an some time drummer. If I had 100th of his skill. I would be so proud.
The fact that he was this good well into his 60's probably does make him the greatest. A number of phenomenal drummers out there, but Rich, Kruppa, Ginger Baker, Joe Morello, and Ringo are my favorites. Very very few could do what Rich did in this video.
this was a fricking amazing drum solo. ... anyone who says otherwise is deaf & blind. whatever else you may care to say: Buddy Rich was a VERY dedicated artist.
I don't know if anyone else felt this, but the entire snare lick was this huge suspense build up to just such a golden moment where your jaw just drops and you become speechless. You don't see that with drum solos anymore. Buddy had something that no one else does.
Buddy was playing things on the kit then that drummers till this day are still influenced by his performances. He was a true pioneer and a man ahead of his time. Legend
That 'boring old guy' is Buddy Rich, who was a great innovator and a superb drummer. His single hand rolls are still emulated by modern drummers to this day. In fact, he's inspired countless of the best drummers in the world like Ginger baker, Carl Palmer, and Neil Peart. His speed, precision, and rudimentary skills are unmatched, and posthumously, he's had over 20 memorial concerts dedicated to him. Watching Buddy hit a snare is perpetually more impressive than watching anything by your Travis.
When you watch someone like Buddy Rich prefrom and he's at the top of his game like this, then words just fail you. He truly is the master drummer apoun all other drummers must be judged by. Watch and be amazed. Top marks all round. Brilliant stuff.
Whiplash didn't bring me here, but I assume the last scene was inspired by this performance? The sweat, his expression, the way he slowed down the tempo then brought it back. Gave me the same chills.
Wow! 🤯🤯🤯🔥🔥 The part from 1:35 to the end just exploded my mind! The level of muscle control needed for a performance like this is WILD!!! 🏆🏆🏆 And shoutout to that necklace!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 …(Also … Season 3, Episode 4 of “Here’s Lucy” brought me here!)
This was recorded in Rochester NY, on the day I was born. (I too being from upstate NY) So, I think this is pretty cool that I know what Buddy Rich was up to on the day I was born!
One thing that always impressed me about Buddy Rich and drummers from his time was the fact that you had to have such an amazing scene of touch when it comes to playing drums. You did have a sound guy changing the volume of your kit as you played. If you had to bounce between playing loud or quite you had to change how much force you are using and where you are playing on the snare or cymbal a lot of times while keeping the same beats per min. Way to many people are impressed with how fast....
Another one of my favorite solos from Buddy. Love how his hands look like hummingbirds wings when he plays fast single stroke rolls. Actually, the sticks look like hummingbirds wings. Sorry. I think the best thing about Buddy was that he never played under his ability. He always gave it 100%.
WOW........his hand speed is AWESOME! I think he's just one of the best and can't be compared to the drummers of today. That reason being because he DIDN'T HAVE A DOUBLE BASS and im sure there aren't too many drummers out there today that can do what Mr. Buddy Rich just did!
I used to own this video and buddy's playing on it is superb. I like "uncle albert admiral halsey" the best on this video. Buddy's solo on west side doesn't disappoint though. Very thorough and colorful.
I don't know who is that Barker man but I LOVE GOOD RAP MUSIC And I LOVE BUDDY RICH Music is not competition, it's about enjoying life, it's about pleasure, and sometimes elevating your soul.

I have this on VHS and haven't seen in awhile. Check out the transiton of the sticks from the head onto the rim and back at 3:35-3:45. Are you kidding me? Fast and clean!!! Amazing techincal ability.
@MrHenryrules Amen! Im 16 and I went through that phase when I was younger. Your not truly a musician until you open your eyes and ears to all music genres and styles and try to expand on your playing ability until you have achieved all that you can in your life.
1940s to 1960s Buddy Rich was all snare insanity that could kill a man by seeing it alone. 1970s Buddy Rich was crazy creative with all sorts of different patterns and rudiments combined into a masterpiece 1980s Buddy Rich was all out insanity xD
The year was about mid 60's. my friend worked on the TV set of the Joey Bishop show, Buddy was a guest on the show, he broke a stick and somehow my friend got the stick and gave it to me as he knew how much I liked Buddy. Lost the stick, still sad about that.
When you catch this man live and experience the explosive energy he exudes, the truth is revealed. He came down to show everyone else how it's supposed to go with most of his playing absent of "boom-bang-boom-bang followed by triplets around the drums. p.s. all the lessons in the world cannot give to someone what isn't there from the get-go. Regardless of his playing onset, Buddy wasn't anything but raw innate talent that you don't find in a book or weekly drum lesson.
@beefcake8888 Spot on with your comments. Couldn't agree more. Wasn't it Joe Morello of dave Brubeck band that said " there's buddy rich, then there's everyone else" God bless you BR.
@thessbmaster Or shot 50 000 times to represent the approximate number of single strokeshe got in a about the 3-minute mark of that solo. Fastest hands I've ever seen, and incredible smooth at that speed.
People trying to suggest that Buddy Rich was only good for Snare drum work really ought to wise up and take a look on TH-cam under Buddy Rich Impossible Drum Solo to buck up their ideas!!!
The funny thing about this ridiculous debate is that, you just know if anybody ever bothered to ask Barker for his opinion, he'd be the first to say Buddy surpassed him! Great solo btw...
serious Question I've studied Buddy Rich since I was thirteen years old and have been absolutely obsessed with how fast his single stroke rolls are I know he's very fast I am just curious if anyone knows how many beats per minutes it actually is it has even got into my dream state. Buddy Rich is my Greatest influence.
Many drummers can play as fast as or faster than Buddy Rich did, for your information. He was fast no doubt but in reality, he wasn't rolling as fast as one would expect. The thing is that he was able to play SO clean and articulate at all dynamics that it gave the illusion of immense speed. The speed of his single stroke rolls are playable by anyone with good technique. But to play them as clean as he did is another story entirely. Besides, speed doesn't mean shit. Buddy was musical and had a unique voice of his own above all. He told stories and captured people with his solos. He was a personality on the drum set. That's why we remember him, not because of his speed.
My Dad took me to this show and I got to meet Buddy at the bar at his break. He autographed my Remo practice pad and man was I awe struck! He was a very nice guy to a shy 12 year old. lucky you.
So you have a practice pad w both Buddy Rich and Philly No Jones autographs? That is awesome and a wonderful memory w your father too btw😊.

A little harsh, but not far off from what I was thinking. I was thinking the expressions on the bands faces were "mess up!" lol
That's GOT to be bullshit. I mean.. c'mon.
He has to have practice because if he didn't.. I don't think I can ever touch a drumstick again.
Buddy Rich is a huge inspiration. I play the saxophone, listen to him, and it just makes me love music that much more. He's one of the greatest.
And this my friends, is why Buddy Rich is my favourite drummer of all time and my inspiration.
I agree with you
That's not sweat dripping from this man. That's awesomeness in liquid form, because that's all he can exude.
A great drum solo from the brilliant mind Buddy Rich

Holy hell, Buddy Rich is indeed rich on drumming talent!
I am FLOORED. Pure art with a snare & bass drum. Beeeeeautiful!
Those drum roll skills are beyond this world.

Oliver Roy this looks almost exactly the same as last scene in Whiplash
Oliver Roy The scene is actualy based on the famous concert of the americas drum solo.
happens a lot in drum solos.
In the movie there is a bus scene where Neiman is actually watching this performance on his phone.
Excellent solo! Buddy was so musical!
Man! He was a bad ass on those single strokes!! OMG..lol. That's a REAL lesson there in technique and fundamentals. Thanks for posting this.
He is definitely the only drummer who needs nothing more than a snare drum to entertain people for hours... nobody else can do it....
This was recorded in Rochester NY, on the day I was born. (I too being from upstate NY) So, I think this is pretty cool that I know what Buddy Rich was up to on the day I was born!
No one will ever touch this guy for technique. Period.
Sonny Payne smoked him.
@@apackerfan cap
his timing is legendary. so impressive. i can watch for hours.
Beautiful .....just beautiful.
Makes that snare sing !
3:43 you knew the soft single strokes were finished when you hear that violent kick of the bass drum.
"I'm Buddy Rich when i fly off the handle".......Thank you Beastie Boys for sparking my interest in him!

A solo of pure chops

Man, even famous drummers play solos in honor of this legend.
the single greatest
i've never heard someone do so many stokes, so fast, for such a long time
he doesnt mis a single note
he's.... a DRUM GOD
Buddy rich is not a drum God but he’s a good drummer
I haven’t heard another big band play this , with a great drum solo.
When the guys in the band are staring in awe, you know there is a genius in your midst….
I don't know who is that Barker man but I LOVE GOOD RAP MUSIC
And I LOVE BUDDY RICH
Music is not competition, it's about enjoying life, it's about pleasure, and sometimes elevating your soul.
Just incredible... like wow... speechless in admiration... :-)
Only Rich can do this. 👍&👏
Someone has been to a music college.
the dynamics on those single strokes....just insane
A true master of the art
those rolls... so much epicness.
He was a great gift to the drum world it's all about practice. He made all that noise out of one snare drum.
Mr. Buddy Rich is the one and only period.
that's the perfect roll right there, most of drumers dream of being able to play that roll.
You know ,I'd just like to think that what a phenomenal player Buddy was and that all he wanted was the very best from all of us.
Awesome solo.
Even after triple by-pass surgery, Buddy always gave it all he had.
Best drum solo ever.
The day this happened the expression "Oh my God" changed to "Oh my Buddy"
Buddy Rich's singles is legit brah..

@elcapoinca Heck yeah! Benny is one of my all time favourites. I love how he invents new ways to change his drum sound so often.
PERFECTION, it can exist.
I think he was pissed at the way he was playing that night, and he went back to square one. He was always trying to better himself. What a genius.
2:21 on is so trippy to watch. by the end his hands are moving at the speed of light.
I have this on VHS and haven't seen in awhile. Check out the transiton of the sticks from the head onto the rim and back at 3:35-3:45. Are you kidding me? Fast and clean!!! Amazing techincal ability.

Buddy was follicly challenged at that point in his life.
